Neighborhood by Neighborhood Analysis<br />

Within Hamilton County there are significant differences in age, race and ethnicity,<br />

and family structure by neighborhood location.<br />

Age: Age statistics generated from the 2000 census by neighborhood indicated<br />

that Amnicola/East Chattanooga (32.0%) had the highest concentration<br />

of children under 18, followed by South Chattanooga (28.0%), and Ridgedale/<br />

Oak Grove/Clifton Hills (27.9%), all City of Chattanooga areas. North Chattanooga/Hill<br />

City/UTC had the highest concentration of 18 to 34 year olds<br />

(46.8%).<br />

Many of the low density areas were neighborhoods with more than 40% of<br />

residents between 35 and 64 led by Northgate/Big Ridge (49.2%) and Westview/Mountain<br />

Shadows (48.1%). More than one-fifth (22.2%) of the Signal<br />

Mountain population was 65 years or older. Lupton/Norcross and Downtown<br />

were the Chattanooga neighborhoods with the highest percentages in the oldest<br />

age group (19.6% and 19.1% respectively).<br />
