learning about chess from the Silver Knights<br />
chess coaches! Our coaches are highlyrated<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essional chess instructors. We<br />
have taught tens <strong>of</strong> thousands <strong>of</strong> children,<br />
including the 2008 national champions<br />
for first and second grade and the 2009<br />
national kindergarten champion. Campers<br />
are broken up into groups by skill level, so<br />
we accept anyone from total beginners<br />
up through experienced and highly-rated<br />
tournament players. Each camper receives<br />
a T-shirt and a tournament-style chess<br />

fresh and salt water fishing in nearby<br />
private ponds and rivers, as well as the<br />

ratio is 1-to-4 to allow for<br />

Saturday Night Hype<br />
“Splash Into <strong>Summer</strong>” Party<br />
Date: June 2 Time: 6:30-9pm<br />
Fee: $1 per person<br />
Location: Old Town Pool,<br />
1609 Cameron St.<br />
5 th -12 th grade students can splash<br />
into summer 2012 with swimming,<br />
music, games, friends and lots <strong>of</strong> fun.<br />
Refreshments will be served outside the<br />
pool gates in the picnic area.<br />
School ID or documents are required.<br />
<strong>City</strong>-Wide Teen Extreme<br />
Scavenger Hunt<br />
Date: June 2. Time: 10am–4pm<br />
Fee: $5 per person<br />
Teams <strong>of</strong> 5 members and an adult<br />
chaperone will compete to acquire items<br />
across the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Alexandria</strong>, from a list<br />
provided by the Teen Office before time<br />
expires. Each item on the list will be<br />
assigned a point value. A panel <strong>of</strong> judges<br />
will evaluate the items submitted by each<br />
team. The team with the most points based<br />
on the items collected will win.<br />
Registration: April 16-May 18.<br />
Teen Extravaganza<br />
Date: Aug 10. Time: 11am-4pm<br />
Fee: $5 per person<br />
We will wrap up the summer with our 4 th<br />
Annual Teen Extravaganza. During this<br />
fantastic end <strong>of</strong> summer event, teens will<br />
participate in carnival style challenges,<br />
games and activities. Participants will<br />
also enjoy lunch, great entertainment,<br />
friends and lots <strong>of</strong> fun. Prizes will be<br />
awarded. Transportation provided from<br />
the neighborhood recreation centers upon<br />
request. Register by July 27.<br />

“Let’s Get F.I.T.”<br />
F.I.T. stands for Friends in Training Together<br />
to be healthier, happier and stronger<br />
individuals both physically and mentally<br />
by maintaining an active and wide-ranging<br />
schedule that incorporates play, learning,<br />
cultural enrichment, and social interaction.<br />
Together the youth in the Power-On or<br />
Power-Up Program have opportunities to<br />
explore, create, compete, train and work as<br />
individuals and teams in a variety <strong>of</strong> activities<br />
and events including sports & games, arts<br />
& crafts, community service, competitions,<br />
personal fitness , field trips and more!<br />
The 2012 <strong>Summer</strong> “Let’s Get F.I.T.” theme<br />
is focused on a “<strong>Summer</strong> <strong>of</strong> Dreams” in<br />
recognition <strong>of</strong> the 2012 <strong>Summer</strong> Olympics<br />
in London, England. Sports, competition,<br />
teamwork, fitness, European culture and<br />
much more is to be explored during the<br />
seven or eight weeks <strong>of</strong> the summer<br />
program at any <strong>of</strong> the Power-On or Power-<br />
Up sites.<br />

Registration begins for <strong>Summer</strong> <strong>Camps</strong>,<br />
Power-On & Power-Up programs on<br />
Wednesday, March 28 for Residents and<br />
Friday, March 30 for nonresidents (not<br />
available for Power-On and Power-Up.) Refer<br />
to the Youth Sports section for registrations<br />
for leagues. There are many ways to<br />
register for our programs, please refer to the<br />
program description to learn how.<br />
Early Registration Discount<br />
Available only for Alex Fun Sports, Alex Fun<br />
Day & Alex Fun Gap Camp. Full payments<br />
received prior to April 9 will receive a $10.00<br />
discount per camp session. Nonresidents<br />
add $25 per camper for each camp session<br />
(excludes before & after care.)<br />
Financial Assistance<br />
Requests MUST be received at least two<br />
weeks prior to the start <strong>of</strong> a camp session.<br />

forms must be submitted with a registration<br />
form indicating the camp(s) <strong>of</strong> interest and<br />
documentation that demonstrates need<br />

<strong>Summer</strong> Food Service Program<br />
for Children<br />
The <strong>Alexandria</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> recreation,<br />
Parks and Cultural Activities, will sponsor<br />
the USDA <strong>Summer</strong> Food Service Program.<br />
Free lunches and/or snacks will be provided<br />
to youth ages 18 and under, weekdays<br />
from June 25-August 17. Acceptance and<br />
participation in the program is the same for<br />
all regardless <strong>of</strong> race, color, national origin,<br />
gender or ability. It is anticipated that meals<br />
will be served at: Charles Houston, Cora<br />
Kelly, Mt. Vernon, Nannie J. Lee, Patrick<br />
Henry and William Ramsay Recreation<br />
Centers and various playground sites<br />
throughout the <strong>City</strong> for any <strong>City</strong> youth. Other<br />
organizations and locations receiving meals<br />
for individuals registered in their programs<br />
include the <strong>Alexandria</strong> Olympic Boys and<br />
Girls Club, Therapeutic Recreation and<br />
the Campagna Kids <strong>Summer</strong> Camp sites.<br />
