Mystics Basketball Camp 

Ages 8-17. The Washington Wizards + 

Mystics Summer Camp provides boys and 

girls of all skill levels with a professional 

basketball learning experience. The 

experienced coaching staff will provide

Silver Knights Chess Camp 


Ages 5-12. Spend a week playing and 

learning about chess from the Silver Knights 

chess coaches! Our coaches are highlyrated 

professional chess instructors. We 

have taught tens of thousands of children, 

including the 2008 national champions 

for first and second grade and the 2009 

national kindergarten champion. Campers 

are broken up into groups by skill level, so 

we accept anyone from total beginners 

up through experienced and highly-rated 

tournament players. Each camper receives

Virqinia Fishinq & Outside Adventures 

Virginia Fishing Adventure 

Ages 8-14. Virginia Fishing Adventures 

offers campers the opportunity to learn 

beginner and intermediate tactics for 

fresh and salt water fishing in nearby 

private ponds and rivers, as well as the 

Chesapeake Bay. We have access to some 

excellent private waters where campers 

are assured success. Our counselorto-camper 

ratio is 1-to-4 to allow for 

one-on-one instructional time each day. 

Campers may also earn their fishing merit 

badge through this program. Safety is 

our number one priority, so campers will 

wear life jackets when in the water or on a 

boat. Virginia Fishing Adventures provides 

all food and drinks, bait and tackle, rods 

and reels, life jackets, and good times. 

No experience necessary. Please visit

NOVA Mountain Biking Camp 

Ages 8-13. Northern Virginia has some 

of the best urban mountain biking trails 

around! Join the staff of Virginia Outside 

for daily instruction, trail rides, and lots 

of fun. Campers will develop beginner 

and intermediate mountain biking skills 


including: steering, shifting, hill climbing 

and descending, log hopping, dodging 

obstacles, etiquette, maintenance, safety 

and more. Campers ride in the morning, 

have a midday activity like visiting a water 

park or cooling off in a river, then get back 

on the bikes in the afternoon. Bikes and 

helmets provided by Virginia Outside, 

but campers are welcome to bring their 

own. We require two emergency contact

Outdoor Adventures for Teens 

with River Riders 

If your teen is tired of the city life, rejuvenate 

them with an unforgettable outdoor 

experience in Harpers Ferry, WV! White 

water rafting, kayaking, tubing, and zip 

line adventures will provide beginner to 

intermediate excitement for any teen in 

need of an invigorating change of pace! 

Each activity is facilitated by River Riders’ 

highly trained guides, who make it their 

goal to share their experience and passion 

for adventure with your teen. Throughout 

the summer we offer single day, multi-day, 

and overnight activities that will provide 

adolescents’ with lifelong memories, as 

well as transportation from Chinquapin 

Recreation Center! All overnight adventures 

include rustic, riverside camping, and 

fireside fun. Single and multi-day activities 

also include lunch. Overnights include 

all meals. This program is suitable for 

adventurous teen’s ages10-17.

The Sports Office is currently seeking 

volunteers to coach baseball, field hockey, 

softball, swimming, track and field, football, 

basketball, cheerleading and volleyball. 

Criminal background checks are required 

by all volunteer coaches. Coaches are 

provided training opportunities. For

Titans Track & Field Club 

Ages 7–14 (as of Jul 31). The track club 

will represent the City of Alexandria and 

compete in local track meets held around 

the metropolitan area June-August. 

Club members will receive the basic 

skills and techniques of track and field 

with the emphasis placed on teamwork, 

sportsmanship, commitment and healthy 

competition.

Girls Field Hockey League 

Ages 9-14 (as of July 31). This field hockey 

program is new and designed to expose the 

girls to this sport that is offered at the high 

school level. Girls must provide their own 

field hockey sticks, shin guards, goggles 

and mouthpieces.

Rugby Program 

Ages 6-13 (as of Jan. 1). The non-contact 

rugby program is designed to incorporate 

the basic rugby skills of running passing, 

team support and decision making in 

a physically safe and non-threatening 

environment. The program will be run in 

conjunction with the Alexandria Rugby Club 

with the teams competing in the Potomac 

Rugby Union League and Rugby Virginia. 

New this season is a tackle rugby program 

for ages 12-13. 



Wahoo Youth Swim Team 

Ages 6-18 (as of Jun 15). Our program 

offers youth of all abilities the opportunity 

to develop their own unique potential. 

The program will promote individual 

achievement and team camaraderie in 

an atmosphere of friendly competition. 

Developing and experienced swimmers 

alike can refine their freestyle, breaststroke, 

backstroke butterfly, turns and starts with 

an experienced coaching staff. Swim meets 

are scheduled every Sat morning from 

mid-June through early August. Swimmers 

must be able to swim 25 meters (1 lap) 

continuously. The swim team participates in 

the Colonial Swim League.

Teens will discuss various topics from 

movies, music, books, and politics to 

teen pregnancy, relationships and family. 

Very few topics are prohibited, so parental

each club meeting (allowing for privacy). 

Topics will be drawn randomly from

again. This club will focus on social and 

emotional development, life skills, character 

development, teen recreation and other 

‘tween concerns. Participants will have fun 

getting orientated to teen life through teen 

appropriate games, challenges, round table 

discussions, special guests, field trips and 

other interactive lessons that should help 

relieve some of the anxiety of becoming

Master Chef Cooking Program

Scavenger Hunt

Teams of 5 members and an adult 

chaperone will compete to acquire items 

across the City of Alexandria, from a list 

provided by the Teen Office before time 

expires. Each item on the list will be 

assigned a point value. A panel of judges 

will evaluate the items submitted by each 

team. The team with the most points based 

on the items collected will win.

Teen Extravaganza 

Date: Aug 10. Time: 11am-4pm 


We will wrap up the summer with our 4 th 

Annual Teen Extravaganza. During this 

fantastic end of summer event, teens will 

participate in carnival style challenges,

friends and lots of fun. Prizes will be 

awarded. Transportation provided from 

the neighborhood recreation centers upon

“Let’s Get F.I.T.” 

F.I.T. stands for Friends in Training Together 

to be healthier, happier and stronger 

individuals both physically and mentally 

by maintaining an active and wide-ranging 

schedule that incorporates play, learning, 

cultural enrichment, and social interaction. 

Together the youth in the Power-On or 

Power-Up Program have opportunities to 

explore, create, compete, train and work as 

individuals and teams in a variety of activities 

and events including sports & games, arts 

& crafts, community service, competitions, 

personal fitness , field trips and more! 

The 2012 Summer “Let’s Get F.I.T.” theme 

is focused on a “Summer of Dreams” in

Early Registration Discount 

Available only for Alex Fun Sports, Alex Fun

Summer Food Service Program 

for Children 

The Alexandria Department of recreation, 

Parks and Cultural Activities, will sponsor 

the USDA Summer Food Service Program. 

Free lunches and/or snacks will be provided 

to youth ages 18 and under, weekdays 

from June 25-August 17. Acceptance and 

participation in the program is the same for 

all regardless of race, color, national origin, 

gender or ability. It is anticipated that meals 

will be served at: Charles Houston, Cora 

Kelly, Mt. Vernon, Nannie J. Lee, Patrick 

Henry and William Ramsay Recreation 

Centers and various playground sites 

throughout the City for any City youth. Other 

organizations and locations receiving meals 

for individuals registered in their programs
