and I reached out the cowboy
stick and told him not to get
near me but to pull me with the
stick. I was elated to feel two
big tugs on the stick and my
movement toward him, and then,
I lost consciousness. In Contemporary
Gospel music, there
is a song that goes: “God is
good! All the time”. If Jack had
been delayed 90 seconds, I
would be in a body bag instead
of writing this account. Jack was
very brave and God is always
right on time.
I have no idea how Jack pulled
me out, I know I went under
because I had water in my lungs
later that night in the ER. I’ve
already told you my age and I
trust Jack will forgive me for
telling he is my senior by more
than a decade. How do you
thank a man for saving your
life? And Dodie for calling 911.
Thank you Jack! You deserve
more recognition than I have to
give! God bless you and yours!
Next thing I recollect was the
Seven Lakes EMT guys trying to
dry me off and get me warm.
Many thanks to all you guys
that save lives on a regular basis.
Being in shock, I just wanted to
go home, but when I couldn’t
walk to the front of Jack’s house,
even with assistance, I submitted
to go to the ER.
It took until about 1:00 am to
bring my core temperature back
up. My body temperature, blood
pressure, lung function (oxygen)
had all bottomed out. (Told
you I was cool!). My wife has a
theory about why I didn’t die
Sunday night: “I talk too much and
God wasn’t ready to listen to
all that!”
I would be remiss if I did not
commend the staff at our ER.
They did everything possible to
get me stabilized, they were
very professional and very considerate
of my wife and her emotional
support. They worked very
diligently with new and modern
equipment to clear my lungs
and get me stable. I got out of the
ER and into a room about 2:30

On the lighter side, my personal
care physician came in Monday
morning to discharge me
and as he entered the room,
he said, “Not often does a doctor
get to say, ‘how are you feeling’
the day after the patient
drowns!”. (I get to pay him for that
kind of humor!) And later when
he left my room he told the staff
at the nursing station to follow
“drowning protocol” and walked
away laughing. One of the nurses
said, “I know what that means;
keep the patient away from large
bodies of water.” Thank Jesus for
saving my soul and Jack for an
ol’ cowboy’s life!”
Actually, I was not totally aware
of the effect of hypothermia. I
related that to the North Atlantic,
not water temperature of 74
degrees. But, trust me, body
temperature drops 22 degrees,
you lose arm and leg function.
Be careful in these lakes!

boat. It might be a good idea
to wear them if you are like me
and older than dirt.
It was the next week before I
realized Jack Lynn had not only
pulled me out but also the old

boat I was tangled in.
Maybe a “Super Hero, Jack
Lynn, action figure” would be in
order.
