Coffee Scene gets new owner, longer hours
Since opening in 2002, The
Coffee Scene in Seven Lakes Village
has become a real community
center for for Seven Lakes
and the surrounding area.
From the kick-fit crew on weekday
mornings to the Foxfire
Ladies every Wednesday, groups
of regulars gather, chat, and
disperse throughout the day.
Folks rush in at 6:30 am for a jolt
of java on the way to work, amble
in around 2:30 pm for a midafternoon
pick-me-up, or duck in
out of the heat after school for a
cool smoothie.
New coffee owner Mike King
likes that — likes being open
whenever folks feel the need
for a little refreshment — so one
of his first initiatives after taking
over on May 1 was to expand the
Scene’s hours of operation on
both ends of the day. The coffee
shop is now open 6 to 6 Monday
through Thursday, 6 to 7 on Fridays
and 8 to 2 on Saturdays.
“Customers said they wanted
us to stay open later, and
we want to respond to customer
demand,” King told The Times.
“If folks want us to do something,
we’ll give it a try. If people
will come in, we’ll stay open
even later.”
King, an Aberdeen resident
who is active-duty military and
works at Fort Bragg, roasts his
own beans — and sells them to
other area shops through his
Summer Creek Gourmet Coffee.
Each day the store’s baristas
Shauna Wire and Erin Boomgarden
select different regular, flavored,
decaf, and flavored decaf
coffees as “Coffees of the Day.”
They’re also trained to brew up
a full range of specialty espresso
drinks and smoothies to complement
the shop’s assortment
of muffins, scones, shortbread
and other baked goods.
King told The Times he hopes
to host some community events
to bring more folks into the shop
at various times of the day. In the
short-term he’s planning to offer
a CPR class oriented to parents,
grandparent, babysitters,
or anyone who spends time
around kids.
“If groups want to hold their
meetings here at night, we’ll be
happy to stay open to accommodate
them,” King told The Times.
He said he hopes eventually to
be able to bring monthly or
biweekly musical performances
back to the schedule at The
Coffee Scene.
In addition to adding programs,
King is adding products. The
Scene recently began offering
“Coffee to Go” — a special diposable
container that holds six
large or eight regular cups of
coffee. “It’s great for business
or board meetings,” King said.
The Coffee Scene is located
beside Bookshop by the Lakes
in Seven Lakes Business Village,
across the parking lot from
First Bank. The phone number
