Joe Granato builds watery landscapes<br />

The Seven Lakes Garden Club<br />

has been busy preparing <strong>for</strong><br />

spring and a new gardening<br />

season. In February the members<br />

heard from Steve Thornburg<br />

and Denise Maynor of the Horticulture<br />

Department of the NC<br />

Zoo.<br />

They discussed a program<br />

on amending sandy soil <strong>for</strong> maximum<br />

<strong>plan</strong>t benefits, including soil<br />

testing, materials used to amend<br />

and composting. They then presented<br />

slides of native <strong>plan</strong>ts<br />

used to establish a butterfly garden<br />

and <strong>plan</strong>ts that attract hummingbirds.<br />

In March, members heard<br />

from Joe Granato of Star Ridge<br />

Aquatics, LLC. The attendees<br />

at this meeting learned about<br />

installing ponds, ponds with<br />

waterfalls, and waterfalls with<br />

no ponds, as well as the newest<br />

technology <strong>for</strong> keeping them<br />

running cleanly and smoothly.<br />

Granato then spoke about <strong>plan</strong>ts,<br />

flowers and fish which gardeners<br />

may want to introduce in<br />

their landscapes.<br />

The April meeting was held in<br />

the North Club House. The featured<br />

speaker was Helen Munro,<br />

local bluebird enthusiast and<br />

member of the North Carolina<br />

Bluebird Society.<br />

Purser will speak to League<br />

Moore County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Susan Purser<br />

is the guest speaker at the League of Women Voters Luncheon<br />

on Tuesday, April 18 at 11:30 am.<br />

Dr. Purser will speak on “Building the Best Schools.”<br />

At the Paddock Restaurant, Longleaf Country Club, Midland<br />

Road, Southern Pines. The public is welcome. The cost is<br />

$12, checks only.<br />

Bob Dawkins, left, Vice President, Seven Lakes<br />

Branch, was recently awarded the BB&T Sterling<br />

Per<strong>for</strong>mance Award <strong>for</strong> 2005. The award is given<br />

to the manager that excels in different categories<br />
