OCEAN CITY TOURISM COMMISSION MEETING<br />

THURSDAY, APRIL 1, 2010 – 3:00 PM<br />

CALL TO ORDER<br />

Mary Knight called the meeting to order. Members present included: Mary Knight,<br />

Susan Jones, Lloyd Martin, Margaret Pillas, Melanie Pursel and Michael James.<br />

Members absent included: Mayor Meehan. Staff present included: Dennis Dare, Fred<br />

Wise, Rick Hamilton, Donna Abbott and Deb Turk. Guests present included: Christine<br />

Cullen representing <strong>Ocean</strong> <strong>City</strong> Today, Jon Tremellen representing OC Hotel-Motel-<br />

Restaurant Association and John Gehrig representing OC Chamber <strong>of</strong> Commerce.<br />

APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF MARCH 4, 2010<br />

Motion by Lloyd Martin, Seconded by Michael James to accept the minutes from the<br />

March 4, 2010 Tourism Commission Meeting as submitted. The motion was unanimous.<br />

UPDATES<br />

DEPARTMENT OF TOURISM (Advertising): Deb Turk stated being very busy and<br />

getting ready to launch the “Insiders” into the ococean.com website, working on Iphone<br />

app and should be launched in a week or two, working on deals page <strong>of</strong> the website,<br />

cable and online advertising to begin mid-May, also working on FY11 budget and<br />

presentation to Mayor and Council.<br />

OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER (Communications/Public Relations): Written<br />

report attached to agenda packet. Donna Abbott added 14 <strong>of</strong> the 21 “Insiders” were in<br />

<strong>tow</strong>n this past weekend and thanked the tourism partners for hosting them. Donna stated<br />

the press kits produced by MGH have been distributed. Donna reported the media tour<br />

with the Mayor (in Baltimore) was very successful with 8 media outlets involved<br />

(calculated value <strong>of</strong> almost $40,000).<br />

CONVENTION CENTER (Operations/Expansion): Sales report attached to agenda<br />

packet. Rick Hamilton reported the plans for expansion are moving forward in schematic<br />

design with Becker Morgan (Salisbury MD) and meeting bi-weekly, interviews have<br />

been held for the construction manager and discussions are ongoing regarding the budget<br />

and feasibility study. Fred Wise stated new business includes a gymnastic event in May<br />

2010 with 950 expected, two residential auctions, a motivation summit with 700 expected<br />

and two mixed martial arts matches (June and August 2010).<br />

DEPARTMENT OF REC & PARKS/SPECIAL EVENTS: No written report.<br />

WORCESTER COUNTY TOURISM: Written report attached to agenda packet.
