The Healthy Lifestyle Program at the Herb Graham Recreation Centre
in Mirrabooka aims to improve the quality of life for Aboriginal people by
helping prevent and manage chronic disease.
Held each Wednesday, the program started earlier this year with Elders
heading out on a group walk for some exercise and later finding out more
about healthy food choices. Aboriginal people taking part have embraced the
program and since renamed it “Ngulluk”, which translates to “us mob” because
group members regard the sessions as “me” or “our” time.
The program offers Aboriginal adults an opportunity to have a yarn over a
healthy lunch and join in traditional Aboriginal games between 10.30am and
12.30pm each Wednesday. Supported by the City of Stirling, the Healthy
Lifestyle Program is run by the North Metropolitan Public Health Unit in
conjunction with the Nyoongar Sports Association and Derbal Yerrigan Health
Service. Contact 9301 9220 for more details about the program.
Street Tree
Trees are an important part of community
health and wellbeing in urban environments.
Trees improve air quality, reduce noise
pollution and reduce the temperature
by shading hard surfaces like roads and
pavements.
With growing infill development, street trees
form a vital part of our community by helping
to offset the loss of trees on private land.
The City of Stirling currently has more than
63,000 street trees and is looking to greatly
improve on this number.
We have recently finished planting all
available street tree stock, but would like to
encourage those interested in a street tree
to make a request now so that the City can
deliver them next winter.
street tree as part of the City’s annual tree
planting program, please phone 9205 8555
The Astor Theatre in Mount Lawley
Located at the corner of Beaufort and Walcott streets in
Mount Lawley, the venue originally opened as the Lyceum
Theatre in 1919. It opened with a 300-seat balcony area
and 760 seats in the stalls (ground level) section. Going
to the cinema proved to be one of the most popular forms
of entertainment during the 1920s and, at one point, the
venue also had an outdoor garden cinema.
The theatre became known as The State Theatre in 1930,
and it was later renovated into the popular art deco style
you see today in 1939. It was renamed The Astor Theatre
Johnny Ruffo
visits Stirling Leisure Centre Scarborough
Children from the City’s Vacation Care program were treated to a Zumba performance
in July, which included a special guest appearance from popular local singing
sensation Johnny Ruffo.
The Boy from Balcatta joined in the Zumba fun, signed autographs and had photos
with children taking part in the school holiday program. During his visit to the newly
launched leisure centre, Johnny also shared some inspiring advice with children,
telling them to never give up on dreams and to reach for the stars. A recent Dancing
with the Stars winner, Johnny later helped judge a dance-off between several
youngsters, with the winners receiving an autographed copy of his latest CD.
