Conservation Volunteers Wanted
The City of Stirling receives support from many dedicated
conservation groups who do great work with the
restoration and improvement of bushland and coastal
areas. These groups carry out a variety of tasks, ranging
from planting seedlings to weeding duties and clean-up
days. Please contact the City on 9205 8555 if you, your
business or school would like to be involved in any
weeding or planting activities in your area.
OPEN FOR FITNESS AND FUN
Already catering for indoor sports,
the new Stirling Leisure Centre
Scarborough will soon offer a
range of group fitness classes
to people of all ages across the
community. Part of the Scarborough
Civic Centre at 173 Gildercliffe
Street in Scarborough, the venue
opened earlier this year and joins
a network of five other Stirling
Leisure Centres spread around the
City. The venue can also be hired
for sporting or corporate functions.

Bushwalking Tips
In the lead-up to summer, experienced
bushwalker Steve Sertis will host an
upcoming one-hour talk at Dianella Library.
Steve has completed five end-to-end
journeys of the Bibbulmun Track over the
years and served as a track maintenance
volunteer since 1997. He will talk about
his love of all things trekking at Dianella
Library from 6.30pm on Tuesday 2 October
2012. Bookings are essential. Please

SENIORS’ FITNESS AND
SPORTING COMPETITIONS
Stirling Leisure Centres are running seniors’ fitness
classes each Monday and Friday morning from
9.30am to 10.30am. These classes are a great opportunity
to get in shape and help delay the ageing factor.
Centre staff are also taking registrations for children’s
soccer coaching and men’s indoor soccer competitions.
Mixed netball and basketball contests will be starting in
September as well as martial arts classes.

KidSport
We remind all dog owners that dogs older than three
months old must be registered with the City of Stirling.
Current registrations set to expire in 2012 end on
Wednesday 31 October and renewals can be made for one
or three years. Fees are outlined below:

Cooking with
whole foods
Cooking author Jude Blereau will visit Karrinyup
Library in September to talk about her healthy and
delicious culinary creations. Jude will share some of
her gastronomic knowledge at a free, two-hour event
at Karrinyup Library on Sunday 23 September 2012
from 2.00pm to 4.00pm. Bookings are essential. Please

Stirling Libraries during September include presentations
from Cullen Wines and the Beyond Gardens team.
The summer sports season is getting closer and KidSport is making it
possible for Western Australian children to participate in community
sport and recreation, regardless of their financial circumstances.
KidSport allows eligible young people aged between 5 and 18 to apply
for financial assistance to go towards club fees. The fees go directly
from the City of Stirling to registered KidSport recreational or

Local History
Focus on…
The Astor Theatre in Mount Lawley
Located at the corner of Beaufort and Walcott streets in
Mount Lawley, the venue originally opened as the Lyceum
Theatre in 1919. It opened with a 300-seat balcony area
and 760 seats in the stalls (ground level) section. Going
to the cinema proved to be one of the most popular forms
of entertainment during the 1920s and, at one point, the
venue also had an outdoor garden cinema.
The theatre became known as The State Theatre in 1930,
and it was later renovated into the popular art deco style
you see today in 1939. It was renamed The Astor Theatre
in 1941.
Heritage Award Win
The City of Stirling’s win at the WA Heritage Awards earlier this year is a great
example of the community and the City working together. The City received the
Outstanding Heritage Practices by a Local Government award for its efforts
to protect heritage buildings and the streetscape of historic buildings in Mount
Lawley, Menora and Inglewood.
The Mount Lawley Society nominated the City for the award to acknowledge a
formal Heritage Protection Area, which helps to preserve these areas, and a
series of related design guidelines. The society itself has excelled in promoting
local heritage protection for the past 35 years by generating community
interest, working with the City to provide advice to developers and contributing
to processes like Town Planning reviews.
School Holiday Activities
Stirling Libraries will run Animal Ark sessions during October, which will give
curious youngsters a hands-on experience with some friendly reptiles and
amphibians. Animal Ark has provided these entertaining and educational,
nature-based workshops with live lizards, frogs and snakes for more than 25
years. The one-hour sessions will be held at all Stirling Libraries during the first
week of the October school holidays.
