Vale Anna Cox 22
We are at the end of another busy and productive
term. This term has come with its challenges, its
positive outcomes for our students, and some sadness.
Early in the term our past colleague Anna Cox passed
away. Anna was an Aboriginal Teaching Assistant on
the Primary Campus, working with children from four
to thirteen years of age. Her attitude and love extended beyond her family
and she shared it with the children and staff at St Mary’s College. A mass
was held on the Primary campus in the Holy Place to provide the
opportunity for the College to appropriately farewell Anna and pay our
respects to the members of her family present at the mass.
At the commencement of the term St Mary’s College was strongly
represented at North West Expo. Our Hospitality and Tourism students,
the Primary Campus Choir, our Creative Dance and Drama students and
our Basketballers, were all positive role models for our College and
ambassadors to the holistic education offered at St Mary’s.
Week five on the Secondary campus was utilized to undertake the exam
regime for all secondary students. Whilst there is no doubt that some of
our students found the exam regime and the exams themselves difficult,
the positives to evolve from this initiative are reaping enormous rewards.
The teachers will utilize the exams as teaching/learning opportunities to
review with the students their study techniques, their achievement levels
and what they need to do to improve their performance. The obvious
application of so many of our students committing time and effort to their
study is a sign to brighten any teacher’s heart.
Our teaching staff across the College continue to work to identify
teaching/learning strategies that will become a common focus to improve
the quality of the learning environment that we are providing at St Mary’s.
Strategies identified encompass basic behaviours such as having the
students move smartly to their classes and staff taking time each week to
contact parents with positive feedback regarding the great things their
children are achieving at school. The SRC continue to represent their peers
well in setting an example for the student body to follow in normalizing
the Get On Board strategies on the Secondary campus.
I constantly receive positive feedback from all areas of the College about
our students’ achievements. Among these, the Reading Recovery and
Gifted and Talented Programs on the Primary have allowed the
participating students to achieve some outstanding results. The general
classroom culture and positive attitude amongst the students of the
Primary Campus is outstanding. I take this opportunity to thank our staff
and families for their efforts to support the education of our students this
term.
I wish staff, students and families a restful break.
From the Chairperson of the College Board
The College Board has been working very hard during the first half of
the year to consolidate the progress the school has made over the
last 12 months.
We have received a number of proposals for the use of the
Commonwealth Grants to Schools money, including significant
maintenance works at the primary and secondary campuses, upgrading
of the Primary Campus Library, and two new science laboratories for the
Secondary Campus. We are quietly confident of success with the
majority of the grants, and if successful, the grants will provide major
upgrades to the College's facilities. With our increasing enrollments, it is important that we stay ahead
of the growth of the St Mary's population and ensure that we provide suitable facilities for our increasing
student numbers.
The College Board is also working with the Catholic Education Office to review the school funding. It is
necessary that the funding is appropriate as the school grows into the future. Additional funding will
ensure that we are able to maintain high academic standards and offer broad education choices as a
regional College of excellence available for the youth of the Kimberley.
Congratulations to the students and staff on completing the first Semester exams on the Secondary
Campus. From reports to date, good results have been the outcome for students and staff. These results
have enabled students to reflect on progress with their studies. My personal view is that exams are a
great way to prepare students for their final year's studies at school. Well done to all involved, and keep
striving to do your best.
Michael Leake
Chairperson St Mary's College Board
Parents and Friends Report
The P&F is still working hard to raise money through fun events which we can all look forward to. A film
night is being planned, there’s enthusiasm for a mini-fete and even something for the grown-ups - a wine
event and a quiz night are under consideration.
It’s not always easy to make it to our monthly meetings but everyone in the school community is more
than welcome to attend and contribute. If you can’t make it, contact the secretary Lisa Klimaitis
(lisa@vlk.com.au) for the meeting agenda, a copy of the minutes or to place an item on the agenda.
A Primary Campus playground, car parking problems at the Primary Campus and the urgent need for a
school crossing supervisor have been among the hot topics at our recent monthly meetings and will be a
focus over the coming months.
Meetings are held at 7 pm on the first Tuesday of each month in the Senior Campus staffroom.
Feast Day Mass and Celebrations
Our whole College Mass was concelebrated by Father Matt
Digges and Father Ernesto Cerutti on 25th May at the
Secondary undercover area.
It is always a significant time when we gather as
one community to give thanks for the blessings of
our College. Father Matt reminded us of the
special role that Mary the mother of God plays in our daily lives and our need to constantly pray to
her.
The story of St. Mary's College is a wonderful one. We have always valued relationships and the need to
recognize difference. As we bid farewell to another Feast Day let us remember to cherish these values.
Let us pray that Mary continues to guide and bless our College.
After the Mass staff and students gathered for morning tea, Primary Students then returned to their
campus for a Tabloid sports day and the Secondary Students participated in sports activities at BRAC.
3.

First Eucharist
Saturday June 13 th, being the feast day of the Body and Blood of Jesus, it was an appropriate day for 27 of
our students to receive their First Eucharist in our Broome Cathedral. The Mass was celebrated by Father
Ernesto Cerutti and the cathedral was filled to overflowing. All the students looked resplendent for the
occasion and afterwards everybody enjoyed the First Communion feast in the Nicholas Emo Centre.
End of Term Reporting — Secondary Campus
Semester One Examinations were sat by all students on the Secondary Campus. Although
this was a daunting experience for our Middle School students who have never sat formal
examinations, it is clear from the positive results some serious study and preparation had
taken place. The Upper School students displayed a degree of application and maturity
that bodes well for the future, particularly our Yr 12 students who will face the Tertiary
Entrance Examinations in November, ably practiced in the techniques and skills of exam
writing.
Examinations are an excellent opportunity for students to identify areas where they
require extra tuition and study to ensure they maximize their understanding and future
performance. An examination is only one component of the overall assessment
programme at St Mary’s College. Research and investigation projects, in-class tests, oral
presentations all cater for the differing learning styles of our students. Preparation for
examinations, however, requires the discipline of revisiting the new concepts and new
understandings taught in class and thereby consolidating on this knowledge. The results of
examinations are as informative for the teacher as it is for the student. Teachers are able
to use the outcomes of examinations to plan further teaching/learning experiences in areas
of weakness or misunderstandings of concepts previously taught.
Secondary Campus - Term Two
Secondary Library - Evening Study Centre
Following the mid-year Examinations, Upper School students are continuing to utilize the Study Centre in
the Secondary Library on Monday to Thursday at 6.30 p.m. Tutors are available to assist students with
organizing their study and supporting their learning.
Work Experience
St Mary’s College Year 11 and 12 students who are
doing Vocational courses and the Workplace Learning
classes are in the process of finding a workplace of
their choice. Students will use these work placements
to gain valuable experience and to help them decide if
a particular job type is the one for them.
At the end of last term close to thirty of our students
took part in work placements, some thought they
would pursue a particular type of work whilst others
decided that the type of work they experienced was
not for them. Positive reports from host employers
only reinforces the efforts our teachers put into
preparing our students for life after school.
Secondary Campus—Term Two
Get on Board
Last year the staff and students adopted the ‘Get on Board’ programme. The aim of the programme is to
give the students authority and responsibility to own their school.
So with the assistance of the College staff, students at their year level were asked what expectations they
had for their College in the playground, in the classroom and for each other.
After several sessions of discussion and reviewing the students wrote down what they wanted their
College to look and feel like. Their expectations were categorised into three areas; students, culture and
classroom culture.
Some examples of what St Mary’s College Secondary students came up with are:
Students - We are the keepers of our St Mary’s story
We acknowledge we are responsible for our own
image
We strive to be positive in all our endeavours
Culture - The students of St Mary’s desire a school free from bullying
Where bullies will be identified and challenged to change
Where vulnerable students will be challenged to grow
Classroom culture - St Mary’s students want to learn in classrooms which are welcoming and safe
With calm and friendly students and staff
Who arrive on time organised for work
Writing down their theory for how they wish their school to be, the students have demonstrated the
clarity of their thinking in what is appropriate to the development of an excellent school environment. The
students are now actively engaged in the complex and challenging exercise of making their theory a lived
reality. The majority of our students, led by the Student Representative Council members, are striving to
engage a minority of their peers who are struggling to adopt an attitude in keeping with the GOB
philosophy and goals. Struggling students meet with the Student Representative Council (SRC) each Friday
and their poor or negative behaviours are challenged. The SRC are empowered to challenge these
students with ideas and consequences in an appropriate manner to have them become part of the St
Mary’s team.
This year the Year 7 and 8 students are being given the opportunity to write down their expectations for
their College.
Secondary Campus—Term Two
In week two the Outdoor Education class went on a two
night, and three day camp to James Price Point. Apart
from being under constant attack from flies,
mosquitoes, and at times gusting winds, the camp was a
great success.
We participated in short walks, fishing and swimming,
along with learning how to set up camp, cook on
trangias, and although most students came relatively
well prepared did not bring a lot of water.
Some of the students spent time complaining, but once
they realised people around them were having fun,
everyone began to enjoy themselves. At night, sitting
around the camp fire and sharing stories, and talking
about life experiences, was great.
Outdoor Education Camp
A big thank you to Baldy and Karen for attending the camp and supplying much needed water. Also all
campers would like to thank Miss Robyn Dunnet for organising and getting all students involved in the
camp activities.
TEE ART TRIP TO PERTH
Seven St Mary’s College Year 12
Art students visited the Art Gallery
of WA in Perth to
participate in a visual analysis
workshop and to view the Year 12
Perspectives Exhibition.
Students gained a valuable
insight into course requirements
and the standard of visual diaries.
Broome Residential College students
My name is Curtley Cox and I am living at the Broome Residential College at the moment. I have been there since
April this year. I originally came from Beagle Bay where I went to The Sacred Heart School until I was 7 years old.
Beagle Bay is an old community and we used to go fishing and hunting a lot. I now live in Broome and have two
brothers, a mum, a dad, grandma and an uncle who also live in Broome.
I like the Residential College because you have your own room and go for bus rides, go to the PCYC and go to watch
and play footy at the weekends. It is also close to the Boulevard Shopping centre, where I go shopping and hang out
with my friends. At the College we also have to do chores including tidying our rooms and doing the dishes.
My favourite subject at St Mary’s is Maths because we do fun activities. I also like Football, Science and Mathletics. I
play football for the Clontarf Football Academy, which is good because you travel around the country to play football.
I want to be a Police Officer when I get older and work in Broome, so I can help other people and be a role
model for young people so they don’t drink and smoke.
I am Miranda Mosquito I am 13 years old and have two younger sisters. I am from Warmun Community, which is
south of Kununurra. Warmun is a quiet Community but we do lots of things there. We go swimming at the local pool
and go fishing and swimming in the rivers. We mainly catch Bream which we cook on hot coals and eat it with
damper.
I am a boarder at the Broome Residential College and I really like it. Since I have been there I have met new friends.
Sometimes we go on bus trips to the beach, movies and shopping. I go to St Mary’s College and it’s great. The
teachers are friendly and kind and always help us. We go to the homework centre 3 days each week. I like PE,
especially when we play basketball and netball.
I am enjoying school and I hope to complete Year 12. In the future I want to play Big League basketball and someday
represent Australia in the Olympic Games.
DIGITAL IMAGING
Jasmijn Tadros
Our students are producing outstanding work,
particularly the upper school students who have had
several years to develop their skills in this field. Of
particular note are the quality photos the students
have captured during sunset excursions when the
photographers teamed up with the school dance
students to capture some incredible silhouettes. This
year students have entered work in the prestigious
National Youth Week Photographic Competition.
Jasmijn Tadros has caught the eye of the judges and
has been shortlisted from over seven hundred
entries. The judges final decision will be handed down
shortly and if successful, she stands to win some great
professional photographic equipment.
Michael Lake recently received an award acknowledging his
contribution to the teaching of Design and Technology.
Over the years that he has taught Design and Technology
Michael has created an effective working relationship with his
students whether it be in wood work or jewelry making. Under
his teaching and guidance the students have produced some
outstanding and creative work.
Congratulations Michael!
St Mary’s College Aboriginal Teaching Assistants recently attended a Professional Development
St Mary’s College was strongly represented at the North
West Expo in early May.
Hospitality and Tourism students impressed with making
and serving mocktails and canapés. The Primary Campus
choir and the Dance Groups showed off their talents in
the Creative Arts area, and St Mary’s Basketballers were
involved in the Expo Basketball Tournament.
Football Academy — Term Two
Term 2 started on a bright note for the WKFAcademy with
staff and students arriving back to a fresh coat of paint on
the buildings exterior and new floor coverings and fridge to
deck out the office interior. Also over the holidays, Tim
Williams from Northern Landscapes, donated time and
equipment to give the gardens a once over, removing
weeds and compacting and spreading pindan and concrete
in the rear garden area creating a camping out spot for
sleep overs and social occasions.
The term has been very busy football wise with training
reduced back to one afternoon a week to reduce football
fatigue. The much enjoyed afterschool football is up and running with all six teams filled to capacity. The premiers
from 07 and 08, Emus have taken a bit of a hit and were absolutely walloped in their last game by a resurgent Sharks.
The WKFA Senior team has been involved in several games and came back from their Exmouth Carnival a very close
second behind the Midwest Academy. It was great to see 3 of the younger boys Jaimal Mung, Imran Paddy and Torey
Rickerby show off some great football prowess. The senior team also traveled to Roebourne returning home bearing
a victory shield, and only last week had a comprehensive win over Derby. Not to be outdone both junior teams performed
exceptionally well in the Clontarf Northern Carnival, coming second and third respectfully. SMC students
Albert Dolby, Wayne Edgar, Kaziem Bin Sali and Ben Streeter were all selected in the All Stars Team. Next week the
junior team is traveling to Fitzroy Crossing to participate in the Smarter than Smoking Cup
The Year 8 class continues to work hard on a Tuesday afternoon and their efforts are beginning to bear fruit with
corn, bok choy, tomatoes, beetroot and egg plant starting to run rampant (in an orderly fashion). So much so Leong,
Brayden, John and Callum were rewarded with movie passes for their excellent gardening skills. The boys have also
assisted in the construction of a new garden shed (materials kindly donated by National Steel Frames) and helped set
up formwork for a concrete slab for our greenhouse and chookpen for which Broomecrete kindly dropped off a
batch of leftover concrete.
The Academy home room on Fridays is operating extremely well and this has been invaluable in allowing the staff to
communicate WKFAc culture and SMC ethos and vision. It also allows Academy staff to prepare the students better
for upcoming trips and football matches as well as just being able to keep in touch with any boys who may need a
little extra attention. The Academy rooms continue to be well frequented by all students and I’m no longer dominating
the table tennis as the boys have worked out they have much better reflexes and eye sight. Connect 4 is now
my game of choice.
All WKFA students continue to display
excellent sportsmanship and exemplary
behaviour when on trips or camps and are a
terrific advertisement for SMC. The boys
continue to embrace the culture of the
Clontarf Foundation and those boys who
attend school and training, display respectful
relationships in and out of school and complete
their schoolwork to the best possible
standard will be rewarded for their efforts
with football games, rewards and trips away.
Parent Class Representatives on Primary Campus
Parent class representatives at the Primary Campus play an important role in the life of the school
and the lives of the children. Parent representatives assist the class teacher with class events, for
example class liturgies, and class assemblies, by contacting and involving other parents. Some class
representatives are producing a class newsletter, and support teachers, parents and children.
Vale Anna Cox
During Term 2, St Mary’s Community has mourned the passing of a
respected colleague and friend Anna Cox. Anna grew up in Beagle Bay and
did her Primary schooling there. Anna was selected to go to Perth and for
her Secondary education and attended St Joachim’s High School, and
completed Year 12 there, boarding at Rossmoyne.
In 1999 Anna got a job as a teaching assistant at St Mary’s Primary School,
working with children from four to thirteen year olds. Her attitude and love
extended beyond her family and she shared it with the children and staff at
St Mary’s College.
Anna was a fantastic athlete, and was a very good netballer and basketballer.
She represented Broome in competitions as well as local carnivals. She won
many awards for her sporting achievements. As well as her sport, one of
Anna’s main loves was going fishing, especially at Gnylmarung, her
community block.
In 2006 Anna was diagnosed with Lung Cancer, this was the greatest setback in her life. This also meant
regular trips to Perth. Her condition varied over the next two years, but because of her illness she
regretfully resigned her position at St Mary’s College in 2008 to give her time to focus on the battle
ahead.
St Mary’s College community, joined by members of Anna’s family, farewelled Anna at a Mass celebrating
her life on the St Mary’s Primary Campus on Friday 5th June, and some staff and students attended her
funeral at Beagle Bay on 13th June.
Anna is deeply missed, but her memory will live in our hearts forever. Rest in peace.
Bishop Christopher Saunders conducted
the Mass to celebrate Anna’s life, on the
Primary Campus.
