COLLECTION AND TRANSPORTATION<br />
OF BROODSTOCK<br />
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA<br />
• Obtain permit from the <strong>NSW</strong> <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Primary</strong> Industries prior to collection.<br />
• The application for collection permit<br />
under section 37 <strong>of</strong> the Fisheries<br />
Management Act 1994 must contain<br />
the following details;<br />
- Name(s) <strong>of</strong> the person(s) applying<br />
for the permit<br />
- Name(s) <strong>of</strong> any person(s) assisting in the<br />
collection <strong>of</strong> the fish<br />
- Species proposed to be taken<br />
- Number <strong>of</strong> fish (maximum) proposed<br />
to be taken<br />
- Exact location <strong>of</strong> site(s) from where<br />
the fish are proposed to be taken<br />
- Description <strong>of</strong> the gear to be used<br />
- Collection period - generally not longer<br />
than 3 months from date <strong>of</strong> issue but<br />
may be extended<br />
- Permit fee - increases each year in-line<br />
with the Consumer Price Index.<br />
• Contact the local <strong>NSW</strong> <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Primary</strong> Industries <strong>of</strong>fice:<br />
advise <strong>of</strong> the impending collection, within<br />
48 hours (or other time as specified).<br />
• Display any signs required under<br />
the permit.<br />
• Ensure appropriate gear is used for<br />
the waters fished.<br />
• Release any non-target native species:<br />
euthanase noxious species such as carp and<br />
other trash fish.<br />
• Use appropriate transport tanks:<br />
with good quality water and oxygen;<br />
use 2.5 g/L salt in transport tank to reduce<br />
stress and prevent fungal infection.<br />
• Quarantine broodstock for at least<br />
2 weeks;<br />
- immediately upon arrival at hatchery;<br />
- before stocking into ponds, cages or tanks.<br />

RECOMMENDED CRITERIA<br />
• Return fish to hatchery as soon as possible<br />
following capture.<br />
• Do not collect fish from farm dams unless the<br />
history <strong>of</strong> the fish is known.<br />
• Chlorinate and dispose <strong>of</strong> water from collecting<br />
site. Do not introduce to farm.
