Justyn Terry – Alexandria, Virginia
On the first weekend of December I was in
Alexandria, Virginia, with Trinity alum, David
Glade and his wife, Jennifer. It was lovely
to have the chance to stay with them and to
learn about the church plant that they had
led from Falls
Church, VA. It
is called, “Christ
the King,” and
I had the joy of preaching to the congregation
on Sunday morning. Remarkably, it is a
church plant that meets in a church building
at 10:30 on a Sunday morning.
The visit was a great
encouragement
to me and to Ben
Dehart who came
with me. Ben is
a current Trinity
student who is
planning to plant
a church when he
graduates, as most Trinity
students do. It was very
illuminating for us both to
see the ways in which God
had provided for this new
congregation, including
places for them to meet
at every stage of their
development.
We also had the
pleasure of dinner
in the Glade’s home
with members of the
leadership of “Christ the
King” along with friends
and alumni of Trinity on
Saturday evening. Hearing testimonies
about how God is touching so many
lives and having the chance to share
about Trinity and invite support made
for a very joyful time.
Plano TX and New York, NY
I was away for the first week of JanTerm at
two very different gatherings. I started the
week at Christ
Church, Plano,
where former
Trinity Board
Chairman, David
Roseberry, led a
day set aside to
plan “Anglican
1000.” This was
a conference
to promote the
The Rev. Canon David Roseberry,
Rector, Christ Church - Plano and
formation of
Chair of Anglican 1000
1,000 church
plants over the next five years in response to
the vision cast by Archbishop Duncan at his
investiture at Christ Church, Plano, last June.
It was wonderful to see so many different
parts of the Anglican Church of North
America working closely together to promote
the mission of the Church.
I was especially struck by how very clear it
was that seminaries have a vital part to play
in church planting. I see this both as an
indication that seminaries have been adapting
to meet the current needs of the Church and
that those changes are being noticed by those
in senior church leadership. Naturally, I am
delighted about that.
The second part of the week was spent at
the Council of Episcopal Deans at General
Seminary, New York City. Leander Harding
came with me for the parallel meeting of
Advancement Officers.
We were both
warmly welcomed
in every way, and
our voices heard on
a range of issues of
common interest.
Two things were
particularly notable about this gathering.
The first was that we agreed it would be
very helpful to carry out a survey to find out
where newly-ordained Episcopal clergy train
these days. Many seminaries have seen their
