Trinity Travels — continued The Rev. Greg Kronz Rector, St. Luke’s Church, Hilton Head Island, SC 8 Seed & Harvest Between the two services on Sunday, I was able to address the rector’s Sunday School class of about 100 people on Lesslie Newbigin. At lunch following Sunday services and at other meal times through my time there, I was able to re-connect with our graduates, meet long-time Trinity friends, and make new friends of the wonderful folk at St. George’s. Grant LeMarquand – Hilton Head, SC I was invited to speak at St. Luke’s Church on Hilton Head Island, SC, where Greg Kronz (MDiv 1985) serves as rector. Greg was on sabbatical and so I was hosted by Trinity grads Tom Hendrickson (MDiv 2004) and Jean DeVaty (MDiv 2005), associates at St. Luke’s. I preached on two Sundays, January 10th and 17th. In between Sundays, my wife, Wendy, preached at a mid-week healing service, and we both had the opportunity to enjoy some rest and the relatively warmer temperatures of the South. In late March, I attended The Episcopal Church’s House of Bishops Meeting on behalf of the conservative side of the Theology Panel on Same-Sex Unions. More engagements come later this spring: • After Easter, the whole seminary will be attending the New Wineskins for Global Mission Conference 2010 in Ridgecrest, NC. It is one of the largest gatherings of missionaries in the Anglican world, and we will have an opportunity to hear and spend time with dear friends, many of whom are Trinity graduates and long-time supporters of the seminary. • The following week, April 14-17, I will serve as moderator of the Wheaton Theology Conference, Wheaton, IL. Speakers Bureau Clay Millener, a December 2009 MDiv graduate from Trinity, headed south in early March to serve in a new position in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. Clay will be assisting former Trinity board member Bishop T. J. Johnston, Rector of St. Peter’s Church in Mt. Pleasant, a church which he planted with his wife, Rees, just over three years ago. The church is growing and in need of additional help, particularly since Bishop Johnston is juggling both his duties as rector and also as bishop in the Anglican Mission in the Americas (AMiA). Clay and his wife, Carla, came to Trinity from Trinity Church in Greenwich, Connecticut where another former Trinity School for Ministry board member, Hillary Bercovici, serves as Scholar in Residence. Trinity’s Curriculum Review Moves to Implementation Trinity’s curriculum is foundational to our Kingdom-building work of “Forming Christian Leaders for Mission.” It is, after all, the framework through which we convey our Trinitarian vision of the Kingdom of God to our students, whether moving toward ordained or lay ministry. Our graduates in turn take that vision out to the world to proclaim the saving grace of Jesus Christ. So curriculum review is one of the most important tasks we can set for ourselves. It is difficult, time-consuming, yet richly-rewarding work. The entire Trinity Community has been engaged in the present curriculum review for several years. The new curriculum continues to build on the firm Christ-centered, evangelical, and Anglican foundation on which Trinity was founded over 30 years ago. Having reached a final form, the newly-revised curriculum was presented at February’s Board of Trustees meeting, and it was enthusiastically endorsed. The roots of this curriculum review go back to the mid-1990s, when a more limited review produced some changes. But the current work took a fresh approach to the central questions: “Who are we as an institution?” “What kind of Christian leader do we want to help form?” and “How is our curriculum designed to reflect both who we are and the kind of leader we want to help form?” Out of these central questions emerged a three-phase process that was spread over a three-year period. The Board of Trustees led the way in Phase One by taking a close and thoughtful look by Mark Stevenson Academic News at “Who are we as an institution?” This phase involved an examination of our core values, particularly in the broader context of the changing landscape of 21st century Anglicanism. This phase included interviews with representatives from all of Trinity’s many constituencies: current students, alumni, board members, faculty, supporters, and church leaders both here and abroad. All were asked to discuss their perceptions of Trinity and their vision for the future. Out of this intentional listening process came a clarification of our core values, which strongly reaffirmed our tradition rooted in the primacy of the Scriptures and the doctrine of salvation by grace alone through faith alone, as expressed in the classic Book of Common Prayer. Building on this work, Phase Two took a serious look at “What kind of Christian leader do we want to help form?” This phase also involved a listening process as we tried to explore the nature of the Church that we will be serving at this time in our history. There were lengthy and useful discussions among our various constituencies to help us understand the realities of the changing global and North American Anglicanism. As the result of this work, we were able to create a comprehensive list of student outcomes reflecting our goal to form strong leaders taking the Gospel message to every part of the globe. The curriculum review was intentionally designed to have each phase build on the other. With Phases One and Two complete, we were able to move to Phase Three by taking a serious look at Trinity’s existing curriculum. There was clearly much that was positive and constructive. But, there were specific areas that required some close attention. For example, the existing requirement of 96 credits could not be completed in full-time study over three WHO are we as an institution? WHAT kind of Christian leader do we want to help form?
