DINE IN ITALIAN STYLE 

AT BELLA ITALIA 

AS I arrived at Bella 

Italia, I was greeted 

at the door and 

shown to the bar as 

the Maitre D enquired how 

many were dining with me. A 

table for one, by the window, 

was quickly prepared, as I 

sipped my chilled Sanpellegrino 

lemon drink, and admired 

the decor of this new 

restaurant in the Southwater 

development.

and after much perusal and 

changing of mind, I settled 

on Insalata Rosso to start, 

followed by Lemon Chicken 

Siciliana. 

The salad was just right 

as a light starter, a lovely

red onion and basil. The olive 

oil and balsamic vinegar 

was left with me to dress 

the salad to my liking, and 

the waiter brought a huge 

pepper mill with which he 

sprinkled fresh ground black 

pepper. 

After the starter was 

cleared and fresh cutlery 

laid out, my main course 

arrived, a fabulous bed of 

pasta in a wonderful lemony 

sauce, with chunks of chicken 

breast. I’d ordered a side 

salad as an accompaniment, 

and both were big servings. 

Again, the black pepper was 

ground onto my dish, and 

fresh parmesan grated to my 

liking. 

A red wine was recommended, 

with a lovely velvety 

finish, going very well 

with my dish. I couldn’t fault 

any of the courses so far, 

and I’m sure the waiter was 

flirting, but that made me 

smile, as I don’t mind being 

referred to as a ‘young lady’ 

note to self: don’t take the 

grandchildren! 

Looking around, the other 

diners seemed to be faring 

just as well, and I was told 

that the garlic bread, and 

garlic mushroom starter at 

an adjoining table was excellent.

grand opening 

TWC IS hosting the 

official opening of 

Southwater on Saturday 

18 October 

with a day of celebration and 

entertainments. 

There’ll be a fun packed 

day with food and craft stalls 

and live music and dance 

and entertainment from a 

range of street theatre artists, 

plus a host of activities 

in Telford Town Park and 

Southwater One. 

It marks the official opening 

of Southwater, the new 

£250m development which 

has transformed the town 

centre. It commences at

What a glorious day for the 

Hands Down the Wrekin 

2014 event, to raise money 

for the Georgia Williams 

Trust, writes Marina Higgins 

of the Wrekin News. 

The event was marshalled 

at every stage, from parking 

in the huge field by the 

Buckatree Hall hotel, then 

along the route to the Wrekin 

and up the entire footpath of 

the Wrekin up to the summit. 

They even provided 

a little 4x4 vehicle to help 

those who were struggling 

to get to the top. Although 

the original plan was to have 

a chain around the Wrekin, 

that had to be abandoned 

for logistical reasons, and 

was then replaced by some 

other ideas for fun attempts 

to break a World Record, 

including the Hokey-Kokey, 

Most Paper Hats and Cracker 

Pulling! 

But although over 2,000 

participants were expected, 

only around 500 actually 

made it, so the Guinness 

World Record that was attempted 

on the day was the 

most number of simultaneous 

Selfies, which was done 

as a chain of people on both 

sides of the last leg of the 

path at the Wrekin Summit. 

Let’s hope that everyone 

who came, enjoyed the day, 

and the event can be bigger 

and better for 2015.

Transport contributions 

TWC could ask developers for contributions 

to the cost of school transport for pupils as 

part of revised guidance on seeking Section 

106 contributions for educational facilities. 

The council’s cabinet has approved 

amendments to the guidance due to the 

increasing birth rate and the number of new 

houses planned. 

When a proposed development is further 

than two miles from the nearest primary 

or three miles from the nearest secondary 

school or there’s no safe walking route, 

strengthen their sales department. 

Said Patrick: “She has 

previous experience of 

working in estate agency 

sales and this is where her 

strength clearly lies.” 

Said Richard: “Bringing 

Sally across to sales allows 

each member of staff more 

time to develop their own 

client bank.” 

TWC will seek contributions from developers 

towards providing transport. 

The other proposed change is a percentage 

of Section 106 contributions towards 

education provision could be allocated to 

extend and improve special school provision. 

Under Section 106 of the Town and 

Country Planning Act, the council can seek 

a financial contribution from a developer of 

new housing towards educational facilities 

in the local area.

housing growth in Lawley.

pace of development in Lawley

TWC is in the process of 

acquiring the school site. It’s 

already set aside for education 

facilities and will include 

restrictive covenants preventing 

the property being 

sold in future.

greatly. Eventually Pat Fairclough 

became chairman; 

she has put a huge amount 

of work over more recent 

years. Catherine Mulvihill, 

assistant to the Town Clerk, 

does a lot of the professional 

organising and is very valuable 

to the Festival. 

When we first started 

there was no money available 

and no staff to help. 

We concentrated on local 

authors, liaising in particular 

with Wrekin Writers, an excellent 

local group that had 

been already set up and of 

which I was (I think) a founder 

member. Also we had the 

idea of finding authors who 

had just published a book, 

concentrating on those who 

would come, talk about their 

new book, sell some, and 

not expect to be paid. Many 

authors did that. For several 

years I wrote a book which 

we launched in October as 

part of the Festival frequently 

published by Wellington Civic 

Society and often a local 

best-seller. 

Wrekin Writers have always 

supported us with valuable 

advice and also run a 

popular course coinciding 

with the festival, though they 

naturally have to charge for 

it. This year it’s my friend 

Jeff Phelps who can be most 

inspiring. I can recommend 

the course to aspiring writers, 

also the writers group, 

which now contains several 

experienced and well-published 

members as well as 

an interesting cross-section

grown steadily and has a 

collection of interesting characters. 

The Literary Festival is still 

fulfilling its aim of promoting 

Wellington. For years we 

have had the largest free 

festival in the country. Of 

course we have a bucket 

by the door hoping for contributions 

from people who 

have enjoyed the evening; 

the Town Council has been 

generous but the organisers 

believe that the cost should 

not be solely born by the 

council, so those who attend 

events are encouraged to 

contribute as much as possible. 

Meanwhile Wellington 

can congratulate itself on an 

excellent series of events. 

We have several excellent 

and successful writers in 

and around our town. Allan 

Frost, who took over from 

me in producing Civic Society 

books and now has 

written some of the best 

local history books I have 

seen anywhere, also gives 

very popular talks. Catherine 

Cooper is a member of the 

festival committee and writes 

best-selling children’s fiction 

of a very high quality. Dr 

Paul Evans, a graduate of 

Wellington Boys’ Modern 

School has just had a book 

called Herbaceous published 

by Little Toller and 

very well reviewed. Mollie 

Bolt’s lovely poetry has been 

published many times over 

the years. Allan, Catherine, 

Mollie and Paul are very different 

in style and content 

but comparable in quality 

with Wellington born William 

Withering and Hesba Stretton 

of centuries ago. 

But we have no book 

shop to sell new books in 

Wellington! Even WH Smith 

has gone. Of course you can 

buy books on line but that’s 

not the same as walking into 

a shop and buying one or 

two. Of course we do have 

a lovely new library and Rob 

runs an excellent secondhand 

shop in the market but 

please will someone open 

a bookshop in Wellington. 

I don’t understand why 

Smiths have given up. They 

have sold thousands of my 

books and with a minimum 

of a third of the price for 

themselves, so they can’t 

have made a loss. 

That’s enough of generalities; 

by now I hope you 

will be wanting to know what 

is on the programme for this 

month. As ever there’s more 

than the committee meant 

to have. That’s an annual 

problem. What are the best 

events? That depends on 

your personal taste, for 

there’s a great variety and I 

can’t think anyone will go to 

every event. 

The launch was on 23rd 

August with a distribution of 

the Dylan Thomas book. On 

3rd October is a children’s 

presentation with authors 

on 4th. There’s a Saltmine 

Theatre Company event in 

All Saints Church, discussions 

of Dylan Thomas at 

Coffee and Cream and at All 

Saints Parish Centre on 7th, 

a ‘Literary Walk’ by Marc 

Petty, ‘Crime in the Great 

War’ in the library, local author 

Al James, Myth, Magic 

and Mayhem at Belmont, 

all coming before the Poet 

Laureate on 11th at Wrekin 

College. 

After all that there are 

nineteen more events and 

I’ve run out of space. Do 

support the festival. You’ll 

just have to go and get a 

programme - quick before 

they all go! 

OCTOBER IS an important 

month for 

Wellington, as it is 

taken up with the 

town’s Literary Festival, the 

largest and best free event 

of its kind in England. I’m 

not going to copy out the 

programme now, as you can 

easily pick one up at the 

library. All I am saying is that, 

as usual it’s a fascinating 

and very varied list of events 

and you’ll be hard pressed 

not to find something to your 

own taste. See for yourself. 

Nearly nineteen years 

ago, at a meeting of Wellington 

Town Council’s Promotion 

and Liaison Committee, 

a small group of 

councillors, representatives 

of various committees and a 

few people that the council 

thought worth asking for advice, 

were about to end their 

meeting, when Councillor 

Gary Davies, the chairman, 

for an idea for promoting 

Wellington. Martin Scholes 

(Wrekin News) said he wondered 

if we might have a 

Literary Festival. I thought 

this an excellent idea; Gary 

became excited and agreed. 

Between us we then invented 

the event, meeting many 

times formally and informally. 

I think it was Mary Lewis 

who insisted on it being free. 

I insisted on local writers 

having priority and thought 

October was the best month. 

So the festival was born. 

We were delighted when, after 

a few years, Shrewsbury 

had a festival too. Imitation is 

the sincerest form of flattery. 

Over the years it has developed, 

evolved, grown and 

changed. Gary threw a great 

amount of enthusiasm at it 

as he often did to projects 

he had taken over; he was

Brass band and learned 

to play tenor horn, just to

alas, the band-leader, a 

Harry Sharkit, a nice chap, 

asked me if I would take the 

learners and help bring them 

on. I accepted this challenge 

and we fixed a convenient 

night. He also told me about 

my Uncle Tommy who used 

to play cornet in the pit orchestras 

for silent films in 

the 1930’s. 

The tuition night got 

so popular that the senior 

members started to turn up 

till I had more people than 

the proper band rehearsal. 

So the treasurer, who didn’t 

seem to like this ‘young 

know-all’, changed the night 

which was not suitable to 

me so my brass band career 

ended. 

It was fortunate because 

shortly after that, Jack Cooper 

from the Delphians Band 

came to see me to inform 

me he was packing in the 

big band to take a trio into 

a local hotel and would I like 

to take over the Delphians? 

Immediately the lure of 

the big band came back to 

me and I accepted. Jack 

took the drummer and the 

bass player with him, which 

meant that I had to look 

for at least a drummer and 

a pianist. In the meantime 

I had to tell Jimmy Fox I 

would be leaving him, and 

he said: “I knew you would 

be going back one day, 

good luck.”

to call a rehearsal and told

that you and the editor 

are wrong to use the NHS as 

a political football. The NHS 

should be taken out of the 

political arena and should 

be run by people who are 

dedicated to successfully 

running it for the benefit of 

British people. 

Political ramblings have 

no place in such an important 

matter as NHS hospital 

services. 

Ron Munt is deceiving 

himself and the public 

play trumpet. While I was 

talking with him he introduced 

me to a tenor sax 

player called Gilly Monks 

and I asked both to come to 

an audition. 

The band was slowly 

coming along and I decided 

I had to have a car so I sold 

the motor-bike and bought 

a 1937 Ford for £50 – it was 

one of the famous £100 prewar 

Fords. 

We had taken on many 

musicians by this time but 

now I had to find the band 

some work. I rang an agent 

I knew, he was a bit of a 

wide-boy but beggars can’t 

be choosers; his name was 

Charlie Clarke. He came to 

a rehearsal and immediately 

gave us about a dozen 

jobs but they were all over 

the north-west which would 

mean transport. Tony, the 

Politics takes over says Vic 

in claiming the people of 

Shropshire are undeserving 

of a new acute hospital 

equipped with innovative 

critical care facilities. 

Ron has no justification 

for dumbing down Telford 

& Wrekin in denying people 

the best medical attention. 

Patients travel on a regular 

basis to get the best treatment 

to places such as Oswestry, 

Stoke, QE and New 

Cross and do not complain 

about it being too far. Having 

such services localised 

would be a massive step 

forward. The statement that 

Shrewsbury is smaller than 

Telford does not hold water 

as Shrewsbury caters 

for near 200,000 people as 

the largest inland county 

and the service extends to 

Powys. 

Ron and the editor appear 

to accept that population 

growth in Shropshire including 

Telford & Wrekin is a 

factor in the overwhelming of 

hospital services yet neither 

wants a solution. Their parochial 

stance of no change 

keep things as they are is 

alarming especially, when 

readily praising the care 

given from RSH and PRH. 

No one can dispute a new 

super hospital is the way forward, 

the NHS has already 

undergone great changes 

things have to change to accommodate 

an evolving universe 

many tried and tested 

regimes are now seen to 

be unworkable in a modern 

age, and hospitals seem to 

be specialising more and 

more. Ron and the editor 

have displayed an ignorance 

of reality and just how out of 

touch they are with society. 

Pouring scorn on unconventional 

ideas is to destroy any 

hope of a thriving future for 

our NHS. Instead of burying 

heads in the sand and 

defiling a national treasure 

it is time to embrace the 

notion of a brand new hospital 

serving the whole of 

Shropshire and welcome the 

opportunities of more jobs, 

drummer, had a van so I 

traded my car for a Bedford 

Dormobile with the firm 

I worked for. It had six seats 

and room for the kit, Tony 

took the rest of the band. It 

was suggested we dropped 

the flower name (Delphians) 

so from then on the band 

was called the Ken Nelson 

Band. 

At about this time Linda 

and I became eligible for a 

council house, and although 

her parents had been very 

good to us since I was demobbed, 

it was wonderful 

to at last have a place of 

our own. At this time I also 

changed my place of work 

to Horns of Stockport, much 

more convenient and a lovely 

family garage to work for. 

They also provided a car 

which meant I was not using 

my petrol except for the 

band work. This was just as 

well due to the long distance 

work Charlie was giving us 

such as Pontefract, Coleville, 

Fleetwood, Crewe and most 

towns in between!

We are big enough to stand 

on our own two feet without 

having to be concerned 

about people living on the 

Welsh border.

Wellington’s musical legacy 

I 

LEFT Wellington in 

1975 to study (Portsmouth 

Polytechnic, 

as it then was, and 

Gesamthochschule Duisburg) 

and then, after some 

months back home in 

1979/1980 had to come to 

London for work (the Civil 

Service). 

Rob Corbett’s piece 

about The Majestic reminded 

me of the times that 

I performed there in the 

early to mid 1960s. 

Indeed, many of us who 

took classical piano lessons 

at Walton’s music 

shop would have, if Mrs 

Edwards, my piano tutor, 

and Mrs Walton thought we 

were ‘up to scratch’. Even 

at the age of 6, as I was 

when I first played (a short 

medley of Strauss waltzes, 

though I’m prepared to be 

corrected if anyone else 

can recall better). In subsequent 

years, as I made 

Les Mondry-Flesch London but 

formerly of 22 Wrekin Road, 

Wellington has written in about 

Rob Corbett’s pieced on the 

Majestic Balleroom. He writes 

my way up the Grades, 

stuff by Bach, Handel and 

others. I can’t recall the 

names of any of the other 

fellow pupils who might 

have played. It is 50 or so 

years ago. 

My recollection is that 

Mrs Walton booked the hall 

for an evening and those 

of us who were doing well 

were paraded early on, to 

the delight of our parents, 

and then, after an interlude, 

a band fronted by I 

think, Brian Eveley, (I offer 

grovelling apologies if I’ve 

misremembered his name) 

who gave lessons at Mrs 

Walton’s shop on drums 

or electric guitar (possibly 

both!) came on. Can’t remember 

the name of the 

band, but I think they did 

‘covers’ of stuff in the hit 

parade of the time. 

What I do remember is 

that Mrs Walton was an absolute 

whizz on the electric 

organ. This was the early 

days of the instrument and 

to a youngster only just discovering 

‘pop’ music; she 

was breathtaking. Mrs Edwards, 

on the other hand, 

seemed to regard anything 

composed after about 

1850 as ‘modern rubbish’. 

Gerschwin was right out!! 

In my later teens, I took 

lessons on the accordion 

with Mrs Walton. My father 

granted me use of his 

120-bass Settimo Soprani, 

which I still have, though 

it’s now in need of a serious 

overhaul. 

I sometimes wonder 

whether Wellington knows 

what a musical legacy we 

have. Mrs Edwards was a 

fabulous pianist and Mrs 

Walton, for all that she 

looked awfully staid, was 

amazingly forward looking 

and versatile as a musician. 

These things only 

become obvious with the 

passage of time. 

On a not unrelated note 

(boom! boom!), our music 

teacher at the Grammar 

School was Eric Cliffe. 

He, like Mrs Walton, was 

not averse to ‘modern’ music 

and encouraged us to 

bring in pop records and 

would deconstruct them 

with us. Not to denigrate, 

but to teach us what we 

were listening to and, perhaps 

more importantly, 

how to listen to it. 

He was another fine pianist. 

I wish I still was. I fumble 

around on an electric keyboard 

now and again, but 

what with work, football, 

cricket, rugby, darts I simply 

didn’t keep up practice. 

I reckon that Mrs Edwards 

and Mrs Walton 

are looking down saying 

‘Wasted our time’.

I really enjoyed the article 

that you published in the 

September edition of the 

Wrekin News as my father 

was Dennis Boyle. His wife 

Dorothy also helped run the 

business. 

It was amazing to see the 

pictures of both the inside 

and outside of the Majestic 

plus the Small Faces. My 

Dad would go to the Marquee 

Club in London to look 

at bands before they were 

famous. Gerry and the Pacemakers 

were booked before 

their first number one hit. 

They were due to play at the 

June Room in Oakengates 

but played the Majestic instead 

- a much bigger venue! 

Later bands would have 

Liz Boyle has written in reply 

to Rob Corbet’s article on the 

Majestic Ballroom. 

a clause in their contract to 

be paid more if they had a 

number 1!! 

I can remember being 

there for The Who and can 

picture Keith Moon on the 

drums. Groups would wait in 

a very small room adjacent 

to the stage before being 

introduced to the audience!

was a good bouncer when

The June Room was built 

by Dad and named because 

it was opened in June! I 

was told that Priscilla White 

came with one of the groups 

from Liverpool once. She 

later to become known as 

Cilla Black!

ROB CORBETT, who sent 

in the original story on the 

Majestic Ballroom has been 

busy collating memories on 

another well-known dance 

hall in Wellington. Back in 

the 1960’s we were blessed 

with four dance halls; the 

Majestic, YMCA Hop and 

Terry Heath’s, these were all 

Saturday night dances and 

on a Monday we had the 

very popular Rhythm Club in 

the old Town Hall (Rumours) 

night club. 

Terry Heath had a bakers 

and confectionery shop 

with an upstairs café. Alongside 

the café was a function 

room that became very popular 

around the 1960’s and 

Rob Corbett was a regular 

visitor. 

He has been busy putting 

together some photographs 

and memories of 

Terry Heath’s and in our nex 

issue Rob will be recalling 

those days. 

The membership card is 

from Terry Heath’s Drumbeat 

Club which was the 

name of the Sunday night 

Soul Club which started in 

1966-67. More in our next 

issue!

HERE I am 

again with my 

memories! I 

worked for Albert 

and Lilly Giles at 

the Majestic before Dennis 

Boyle acquired the 

business. It was in the 

late ‘50’s and I retired 

in 1963 after becoming 

pregnant. 

I waited on tables and 

sometimes we had as 

many as 100 people dining. 

We worked in twos 

carrying trays to tables 

and the girls served the 

customers. 

They were happy 

times and my sister, married 

to Roy Jewell always 

served the top table. Mr 

Giles would stand and 

give the signals when we 

had to start serving – we 

would start at 9am in 

the morning to prepare 

vegetables and get all 

dishes into the hot cupboard. 

Madge Hunter and 

Barbara Growcott who 

were sisters, helped Mrs 

Giles with the cooking. 

Madge and Stan were 

caretakers living in the 

flat that Dave Gregory 

mentioned. In the afternoon 

we would lay the 

tables. Mr Giles would 

always sit and see that 

everyone had arm room

would adjourn to the 

bars. Mike Ridgeway 

ran the Hunter Moon 

bar and Wilf Broadhurst 

the top bar. Mr Warwick 

used to do the cash 

desk whilst Roy Jewell 

and Dave Bufton were 

doormen. Stan Hunter 

did the gents cloakroom, 

Mrs Davies did the ladies 

cloakroom. Mr Giles kept 

a big staff around him 

when functions were on. 

Mr Follington was Mr 

Giles’ son-in-law, Frank 

Morris and his band with 

Cyril Birmingham on 

the organ, played most 

functions which required 

dancing. 

Well, I think that’s 

enough for now; health 

allowing I will write more 

later but my memory is 

not too bad for an 84 

year-old! 

Thinking of it Mr Giles 

had his fair share of big 

bands at the Majestic. I 

can remember Victor Silvester, 

Ken Brattenbury 

and even Gerry and the 

Pacemakers. 

Rob has brought the 

memories flooding back 

but he had is slightly 

wrong. I never worked 

for Dennis Boyle at the 

Majestic.

in the Day Centre that I 

attend and found it very 

interesting indeed.

us all. 

Then we would visit art 

galleries and the cinema 

and the Royal Dutch Palace 

which was nearby. The lovely 

Dutch people that greeted 

us all with a smile and lots of 

thank you’s. 

Once a month an RAF 

coach came to the shop 

from Eindhoven, spending 

time afterwards taking in 

the sea air as their base in 

the Netherlands was in midcountry. 

That disaster in the recovery 

mission of the victims 

of Flight 17 to the Duch Air 

Base brought back memories 

of my long-ago days.

my mum was too small to 

reach the bobbins on the 

looms even standing on a 

“buffett” (stool), so her boss 

agreed with Grandma that 

she should stay at home 

and help with the daily 

chores like mopping scrubbing, 

blackleading and other 

drudgery. 

But apparently mum 

loved going to local dances 

and I believe it was on one 

of those evenings she met 

my dad, he was not a dancer 

but had a ‘dance band’ 

and he played the piano. 

He was employed in one 

of the local Bleachers and 

Dyers factories, which lasted 

up until a couple of years 

before the onset of WW2, 

he got a job as manager to 

one of the friendly societies 

(forerunners to the NHS). 

Now just to digress as I 

said dad didn’t dance, but I 

think he must have ‘winked’ 

at mum a few times as she 

danced by the stage. 

After a while they married 

and eventually their little 

family consisted of three 

daughters Irene, Rona and 

Sheila. 

Then the war started 

and dad was called up into 

the Army, and I have been 

thinking about mum as with 

many more wives during 

those wartime years were

100 SUMMERS AGO 

WHILST WE have 

been basking 

in this very 

clement summer, 

it seems almost ironic 

that it mirrors that “last glorious 

summer of the peace” 

exactly one hundred years 

ago. An Archduke was assassinated 

in Sarajevo. So 

what? What did that mean 

to us, not a lot I imagine! 

Little did we know that 

his demise was to lead us 

into a conflict that would 

change the lives forever of 

those living then and now. 

Prior to 1914 the reign 

of Edward VIII was a rather 

quiet and uneventful time 

by comparison. Each knew 

his place and the social 

‘pecking order’ was prevalent. 

There were those 

above and those below and 

the twain rarely met. The

valuable reference for reminisce 

and in particular railway 

reminiscences’, Wrekin 

News is an absolute gem! 

The ‘Haybridge junction 

derailment’ that certainly 

was in the 1940s. And yes, 

I do recall it. But my phase 

of observation began only 

when I arrived at the Regent 

Street back garden of 

my grandparents, late that 

morning. 

It was a Sunday. Rail traffic 

was much lower, nevertheless 

it certainly did cause 

a serious closure to all up 

and down trains for many 

hours. 

Having gained my viewpoint, 

the main recall is: the 

steam railway crane, it’s 

short train of support vehicles 

(including a ‘mess’ 

coach) an 0-6-0 Dean 

Goods, simmering on the 

adjacent track with ballast

A plea to be allowed to 

go to the bridge was vetoed 

by my grannie, but the action 

was partly shielded from 

my sight by embankment 

bushes. 

The toing and froing of 

track workers in an out of 

their ‘mess’ coach took 

place right before my very 

alert eyes. 

Simmering close by the 

box – a Pannier Tank and 

owners of country estates 

were looked after by armies 

of servants and revelled in 

a life of luxury but everyone 

seemed content with his 

lot. How long was this to 

last? The King himself who 

had lived through the clash 

with the Boers, was happy 

to endorse our entente cordiale 

with our old German 

enemy. Very soon, however, 

the rug was pulled from 

beneath our feet when, at 

11pm on August 4th 1914, 

we declared war on Germany. 

What excitement as Lord 

Kitchener’s face appeared 

on posters, forefinger outstretched 

in a gesture of 

calling young men to arms. 

Those young men were 

eager for the excitement 

of serving their country for 

a few months. After all, it 

would all be over by Christmas! 

Army recruitment offices 

were full to capacity with 

those desperate to enlist, 

many of whom had lied 

about their age and were 

merely in their early teens. 

How long would it be before 

the stark realism of war 

became apparent. Many of 

those young recruits had 

lived in tight knit communities 

and rarely ventured

Everything seemed (to 

me) to be in slow motion 

but the clear-up and slowdeparture 

of all the gangs, 

crane, wagons was leisurely 

– at least that was my impression! 

The loco which caused 

this mayhem had been 

re-railed and presumably 

towed away somewhere, so 

I never did see the culprit. 

Perhaps the prize spot 

was that huge GWR railway 

crane, from Shrewsbury.

on Ketley. He writes: 

Does anyone have any information 

on Ketley Brook, Ketley Offices, 

Days Buildings and Victoria Terrace? 

Was there a shop on the 

end of Victoria Terrace? There is 

one shown in Terry Lowe’s book 

but we are not sure if it’s the Days 

building OR Victoria Terrace. It 

can be in the form of pictures 

documents or oral. The Ketley History 

Group are still looking for 

any that you can give. They do 

have quite a lot but there are 

still gaps to be closed. If you 

far from their own town or

such as Ypres, Passchendaele

names whilst beforehand 

they might as well have belonged 

to a different planet. 

At the outbreak of war 

streets were lined with 

sweethearts, wives, mothers 

and friends bidding

never see again and who 

would end their lives far 

away in some foreign field 

to be buried far from home 

and everything they held 

dear. As families were larger 

then than now, mothers 

would see several sons off 

to war but it was doubtful 

she would see all, if any 

return. 

With the menfolk away 

embroiled in combat at the 

front, who was to step into 

their work shoes? Like it or 

not women, who did not 

even have the right to vote 

at that time, were called 

upon to show their mettle 

and step into the previously 

male dominated 

workforce. Someone had 

to manufacture munitions, 

work the land, nurse the 

sick and wounded and generally 

keep the wheels of 

the country well-oiled and 

running smoothly. 

Times were changing! 

The womenfolk of our 

country began to realise 

they were not born merely 

to be housewives or mothers 

but were able to tackle 

jobs of their male counterparts 

which stretched their 

capabilities beyond hearth 

and home! 

War is a great social 

leveller with Dustmen and 

Dukes fighting shoulder to 

shoulder in defence of their 

country. The enemy is impartial 

to rank or status and 

once faced with that enemy, 

it was a case of every 

man for himself. 

Whilst every conflict is 

traumatic, this ‘war to end 

all wars’ was overwhelmingly 

poignant and so unnecessary. 

Nearly every 

town and village across 

the land has a memorial of 

some kind bearing testament 

to the gallant sons 

who took the Kings shilling 

and in many cases paid the 

ultimate price for doing so. 

There are other kinds 

of memorials to the war 

dead too. In Shropshire we 

have our own Wilfred Owen 

whose enduring poetry was 

written from first-hand experience 

and the enchanting 

music of someone like 

Ralph Vaughan Williams 

which lives on in memory 

of this time. It is just a pity 

that the surreal Christmas 

truce between the British 

and the German troops in 

1914 could not have served 

as an example to end the 

war there and then. 

It was not to be. Will 

we ever learn? I doubt it! 

However when we wear 

our Flanders Poppy in November, 

it will bring home 

more than ever the sacrifices 

those men made for 

us, and which triggered off 

social change which was 

even more dramatic following 

the Second World War 

only a matter of years later.

From the eyes of a young evacuee 

IF I may return to the time 

of my arrival in Wellington, 

I spent a month getting 

acclimatised to the 

locality. 

There is one thing that 

dominates Wellington and 

even though the rains of the 

first weeks in November and 

December, it was there like 

a slumbering giant. Yes, the 

Wrekin, Wellington’s very 

own hill - not quite a mountain 

– but not far short. 

In the spring of 1941, 

when the weather improved 

sufficiently, I found my way, 

past the lovely but smaller 

hill, the Ercall, to the top of 

the Wrekin. The Forest Glen 

at the foot of the Wrekin was 

very popular for drinks and 

meals. Slightly less than halfway 

up was the Half Way 

House, another place for refreshments 

and also with a 

play area and swing boats for 

the youngsters. 

In Spring and Summer 

the Wrekin was crowded. 

The view from the top is well 

worth the climb. It held a 

great attraction for me and 

during the first Summer

Wellington in the 

war years from 

the eyes of a 

young evacuee. 

He particularly has 

fond memories of 

the Wrekin. 

I walked on most Sunday 

mornings from King Street 

to the top of the Wrekin and 

back again in time for dinner. 

It wasn’t long before I 

needed to look for a job and 

the obvious place was the 

Ordnance Depot at Donnington 

where more and more 

vacancies appeared as the 

buildings progressed. I started 

work there on December 

13 1940 (I don’t remember 

whether or not it was a Friday 

but I doubt it). 

The Depot seemed to be 

in the middle of nowhere. 

The journey from Wellington 

was along the road to Newport 

through the small village 

of Hadley and the village of 

Trench. 

Trench was built on the 

type of Ribbon Development. 

Houses were built all along 

both sides of the road. It 

became a long village but it 

had no depth. 

After Trench was Donnington. 

As you approached 

Donnington the Depot was 

(and of course still is) on the 

left and the approach road to 

it formed a crossroads with 

Farm Lane. Farm Lane was 

just that, a lane hardly wide 

enough for the cars to pass, 

with hedges on both sides 

and a farm where now stands 

the Ambulance Station and 

Medical Centre. 

There were fields all 

around but as you proceeded 

up Farm Lane past the 

four ways, there were a few 

rows of miner’s cottages and 

one or two cottages standing 

alone with the chains around 

the walls and going right 

round the cottage. 

These I found were to 

keep the cottages from falling

Donnington village was 

a cluster of cottages near 

the old Walkers Works and 

the road leading to ‘The Bell’ 

public house and Donnington 

Wood Church. 

Walkers at that time made 

the gas holders for the oldtime 

gas works of what is 

now a gone age. Walker’s 

clock now stands proudly at 

the centre of the roundabout 

on the new road from Trench 

to Newport. 

Near Walkers, on the other 

side of the Wellington-Newport 

road on a small area 

beside what is now a garage, 

was a local wharf where small 

trains used to bring coal 

down from the Granville Pit, 

near St George’s to Walkers 

and presumably some local 

coal merchants. The railway 

line crossed the road which 

had a level crossing, something 

rarely seen these days.

I would also like to thank all concerned who

providing the research for those wanting to know 

their family history, also the ladies in the kitchen 

who provided all the wonderful refreshments and 

cups of tea and coffee. 

Arleston have put on several events in the past 

years but I think this one has been the icing on 

the cake.

to family 

owned 

Four years ago the Buckatree Hall Hotel was 

owned by a chain and decorated with the same 

faceless furniture in every hotel across the UK. 

The 

continuing 

story of the 

Buckatree 

Hall. 

IT FACED an uncertain 

future as customers deserted 

the iconic building 

at the foot of the 

Wrekin. 

Now it’s been transformed 

and restored to a traditional 

family-owned hotel 

incorporating the character 

of its setting. 

Owner Grant Moon is 

celebrating four years since 

he bought it from the Swallow 

Hotels group. 

He said: “The building 

had been neglected for a 

very long time, ten years or 

more, the decor was from 

the 1980s. 

“A hotel must make people 

feel comfortable but 

also attract corporate business. 

“I feel we’ve slowly put 

the hotel back together, we 

have a great team and got 

them motivated again and 

that’s the vital part of being 

family owned.” 

Mr Moon bought the hotel 

via Christie and Co (for 

an undisclosed fee) on September 

20 2010. 

He’s spent over £1million 

refurbishing it, adding leisure 

facilities and creating 

a new function room and 

outdoor wedding facility. 

It welcomes thousands 

of visitors every year from 

across the world and hosts 

a variety of charity and corporate 

events, plus many 

weddings. 

“It was exactly what we 

expected,” he added. 

“There were infrastructure 

problems, plus cosmetic 

things. It lacked character 

and essential facilities like a 

spacious bar. 

“We’ve spent a lot of 

money but the renovation 

work will continue, there’s 

still so much potential and 

we want to maintain our 

standards. 

“Many places spend 

money and then ease off, 

for us it’s constant reinvention, 

not waiting for things 

to wear out, making sure we 

follow the trend. 

“If we are not moving 

forward, we’d be falling 

backwards. 

“I’m thrilled with what 

we’ve achieved and my 

plans are simply to make 

it grow.” 

The building is believed 

to date back to 1912, it was 

rebuilt in the 1920s by Sir 

John Bayley, the founder of 

Wrekin College, and in the 

1930s it was owned by the 

Lander family.

and Muriel, along with their 

daughters Rachel and Joan, 

lived at the Hall as a private 

residence before moving to 

Sunnycroft in 1943. 

It opened as a hotel and 

country club in the 1960s by 

John and Marjorie Wilson, 

being opened by England 

international and Wolverhampton

Sous chef Debbie Jarvis, 

44, of Madeley, began working 

in the kitchen at the 

hotel when she was 16, under 

the management of the 

Wilson family. 

Since then she’s worked 

for McDonalds Hotels, 

Swallow and now Mr Moon. 

She said: “When I first 

started it was 32 bedrooms 

and now it’s grown to 62, 

with function rooms. 

“Every time it’s changed 

hands it’s like a different 

hotel and I’ve worried about 

the future of the hotel in 

the past. 

“Under chains very little 

was done to it, morale 

was low and at times you 

felt like you didn’t want to 

come into work. 

“I’m glad it’s back in family 

ownership, I can develop 

my skills more with input 

into the menu, morale is up 

and most importantly, the 

Buckatree is back to being 

known for the character it 

has.” 

The mother-of-one said 

she used to do all her own 

butchery and fish preparation 

but the industry itself 

has changed a great deal. 

Unlike Mrs Jarvis’ 28 

years at the business, general 

manager Wayne Jenson 

has been in his post for 

two years. 

But with 25 years’ experience 

in the hotel industry 

he said the Buckatree is 

nothing like any other hotel 

he’s worked at. 

He said: “The industry 

has changed a lot. Each 

hotel must have something 

that characterises it and attracts 

guests. 

“We have that in bucket 

loads because of the location, 

the name’s said 

to have derived from stag 

hunting days when a buck 

was found in the fork of a 

tree, you can’t get much 

more traditional than that!”

restaurant, 50-cover bar 

and a 200-capacity function

Telford and Wrekin Borough

of the HTA Garden Futures Conference 

which takes place on 15 October 2014 

in London. 

Andrew McMillan, an advisor to private 

and public sectors, spent over 20 

years with the John Lewis Partnership, 

the last eight being responsible for customer 

service across the department 

store division. 

In his keynote closing session titled 

‘Bigger, Better, Stronger’ Andrew 

shares his experience of difficult times 

and how he learned from and used 

this to drive the business forward. It 

resulted in better sales, improved efficiencies 

and increased resilience to 

market conditions. 

In order to attract year round sales 

many garden centres have diversified 

their offering. 

In his session titled ‘Maintaining your 

identity and a profitable product mix’, 

Julian Winfield, CEO of Haskins Garden 

Centres will discuss pros and cons of 

modern garden centrse and shares his 

opinion on where things are going.

Gardening for 

the right season 

The leaves are falling and 

being raked up, the last 

plants with flowers are being 

deadheaded to coax the last 

few blooms out of them and 

the lawn is being prepared 

for its long winter sleep. Or 

not, because over the past 

several years lawn mowing 

that would almost never 

have taken place during the 

winter now seems to be a 

chore that needs to take 

place at least several times 

throughout the long months 

of the British winter. 

Lawns can now be raked 

and scarified and spiked in 

order to prepare them for 

winter, perhaps re-seeded 

and fed if necessary. Do be 

wary of what chemicals you 

use on your lawn as some 

of them are not so much pet 

friendly as pet hostile, so 

do keep Rover or Kitty well 

out of harm’s way. And do 

remember to use bee and 

other wildlife friendly gardening 

practices whenever and 

wherever this is possible. 

Incidentally if you do rake 

up leaves and prepare to 

have bonfires (some gardeners 

like to make their own 

ash for use in their gardens) 

then do please ensure that 

no hedgehogs have decided 

to turn your bonfire into as 

Hedgehog Hotel before you 

light the bonfire. And by the 

way, if you do decide to have 

a bonfire, please do not be 

tempted to use accelerants 

to light the bonfire as these 

have an unfortunate habit of 

setting fire to the gardener, 

too, so do please play it 

safe. After all, it is much 

better to be safe, rather than 

sorry.

Telford United as 

they have been struggling to 

cope with the rigours of their 

newly elevated status at the 

pinnacle of the non league 

game in the Vanarama Conference 

Premier. 

It would be ridiculous to 

say otherwise of any club 

that has failed to win in eleven 

games, but AFC Telford 

United is a club that was 

born out of adversity and a 

club that is not afraid of a 

challenge. 

That is exactly what they 

face if they are to maintain 

their newly earned status.

Owens have been moved

Following the promising 

2-2 draw with the then league 

leaders Barnet at the New 

Bucks Head, Telford made 

the relatively short trip to 

struggling Alfreton in optimistic 

mood. 

Defensive frailty once 

again reared its ugly head. 

To be fair though, Alfreton 

were fortunate to open the 

scoring early on following a 

deflection to Andi Thanoj’s 

long range effort. Tony Gray 

then allowed Bucks fans 

some relief with a quickfire 

equaliser before Tom Shaw 

and Joe Ironside ensured the 

home side would go into the 

break with a two goal lead. 

In an open game, played 

between two sides with two 

of the most porous defences 

in the country it always 

looked likely more goals 

would come. It was Telford 

who delivered on that count 

as Neill Byrne headed home 

following a corner. 

Having now gone ten 

Conference Premier games 

without a win a visit to high 

flying Halifax was definitely 

not what was needed. Fears 

of a heavy defeat were proven 

correct as Telford were 

routed by five goals to nil. 

A demoralised Bucks 

side were beaten as early as 

the first quarter hour as the

Shaymen raced into a two 

goal lead. It was then backs 

against the well as Telford 

tried to hold back the onslaught 

but the defence was 

breached for a third time as 

Scott Boden found the net. 

The Bucks offered little in 

return and suffered further 

punishment as first Paul Marshall 

and then Danny Hattersley, 

with his second of the 

game, added to the score. 

Second place Torquay 

United will have arrived at 

the New Bucks Head confident 

of getting a result. But 

the in-form Gulls got more 

than they bargained for from 

a well motivated Telford. 

Wellington just miss out 

Wellington lost the last game 

of the season and finished 

third – one place away from 

promotion. However, that 

disappointment should be 

balanced against a relatively 

successful season. Promotion 

was an aspiration this 

year, not essential. What 

was essential was the development 

of young cricketers. 

To a certain degree 

this has been achieved but 

Wellington will still want their 

young players to improve. 

Dan Lloyd, left arm spinner, 

has had some outstanding 

performances, claiming total 

of 24 league wickets in 2014. 

He is a young player that 

has managed to influence 

results and win games. Wellington 

will be looking for 

other youngsters to follow 



his example.

With three games to go 

Wellington were in a great 

position to secure promotion 

but three tough games 

Local cricket with Fraser Watson 

still had to played. The first 

away at Barnards Green saw 

Wellington lose vital ground. 

Put into bat Wellington were 

rolled over for 140 after 40 

overs. 

Barnards Green reached 

the target with 20 overs to 

spare and seven wickets in 

hand. 

The next big game saw 

the visit of Wolverhampton. 

Wellington won the toss and 

elected to bowl. Wolverhampton 

looked vulnerable 

at 96 for 4. Some more impressive 

bowling from Dan 

Lloyd and Wendell Wagner 

limited Wolverhampton 

to 142 all out. Then, Neil 

Edwards simply destroyed 

the bowling, smashing 68 

in 30 balls, an innings that 

included 8 sixes. Young 

Daniel Vaughan and Wendell 

Wagner guided Wellington 

After a good start the 

home side took the lead as 

the visitor’s keeper Martin 

Rice spilled Andy Todd’s 

Shot into the path of Mike 

Grogan who turned the ball 

home gleefully. Torquay responded 

with two goals of 

their own through Angus 

Macdonald and Ryan Bowman 

to turn the game around 

by the half hour mark. However, 

unperturbed by this setback 

Rod McDonald headed 

home to level for the Bucks 

just before the interval to 

bring to an end a thoroughly 

entertaining half. 

Soon after the restart 

Torquay’s Toby Ajala received 

a second yellow card 

and his marching orders 

following rash challenge on 

Ryan Higgins and this was an 

invitation for Telford to take 

the game to their opponents. 

Home debutante Higgins 

was involved again as his 

long throw caused problems 

for the away defence and 

Skipper Steve Akrigg was on 

hand to head a looping header 

into the net. Now they were 

3-2 up and in sight of that elusive 

victory Telford sat back 

a little as Torquay showed 

some character themselves 

as they threatened. They 

regained parity with twenty 

minutes to go as Josh Wakefield 

forced the ball in. But 

Telford were not finished yet 

and substitute Adam Farrell 

sent the crowd wild as he 

scrambled an eighty-second 

minute winner. 

A tense few minutes followed 

but the Gulls’ challenge 

was finally extinguished 

in injury time as a 

second Torquay man, Aaron 

Downes, was shown a red 

card for a vicious tackle on 

Higgins. 

As the final whistle sounded 

a palpable sigh of relief 

was apparent from the majority 

of the 1,600 crowd, the 

Bucks had finally won and 

what is more, they had done 

it with style. 

to 146 for 3 with 25 overs to 

spare. A great 7 wicket win 

which saw Wellington rise to 

second in the table with one 

game to go, a difficult away 

trip to Bromsgrove. 

Win the game and win 

promotion. Bromsgrove batted 

first and were bowled out 

for 169 in 33 overs. Unfortunately, 

Wellington’s batting 

never materialised. Neil Edwards 

and Gareth Rees were 

back in the pavilion with the 

score on 22. Wellington 

were finally bowled out for 

135, 35 runs short of a return 

to the Premier League. 

Wellington can certainly 

take pride in their performances 

this season but 

this season may finally be 

judged on ‘what happens 

next year’. The foundation 

has been set for a 2015 promotion 

season.
