Soccer Knights repeat as CCC South champs
NEWINGTON -- The Southlngton
Blue Knights Lk ys Soecer Te.am, now 13-
1-1, edged Plata on Friday, 2-1, and then
shelled Newington 7-3 on Monday, capluring
their fourth straight CCC South
Overall the Knights have won seven
division titles, one in 1974 and six sirtce
1980.
The Plait Panthers of Mcrlden provided
the opposition as a cold October
rain played havoc with the field and footing.
The Knights were an offensive terror
in the first half. taking 19 shots on goal
and 10 comer kicks. Chuck Smith of the
Panthers came through with 13 saves in
the Platt goal and held the Knights scoreless
in the first half.
The Panthers never advanced the ball
offensively and were content being deadlocked.at
0-0, ready to start the second
half.
The Blue Knights came out storming
in the final 40 minutes, as Gian Massaro
charged down the right wing drilling a
hard shot fen goal that deflected offa Platt
defender and into the comer of the net,
giving the Knights a 1-0 lead at the 2:30
mark of the second half.
The crowd, consisting mostly of
Southingtonfans, might have been thinking
that now the goals would be a deluge
as sure as the falfing rain, but the rain
stopped.
The Panthers began their first offensive
drive ofthe game. It wasn't the lassic
breakaway, ending up one-on-one in
confrontation with the goafie. Instead it
was a routine boot from far away that
rolled into and right back out o.fthe hands
of Southington's goalie Dave Mikoss.
Tying the score at one on their first shot of
the final stanza, there still remained 31
minutes left to play.
Plata was now fired up, IXtt so too were
the Knights as they controlled the ball
and the field position. The tension was
building, and flare-ups between opposi-
handed out a yellow card to the Knights
and the personal fouls abated to an acceptable
level.
A sloppy defensive play by the Knights
allowed the Panthers a second scoring
opportunity with a comer kick. Platt was
unable to capitalize on the play and lost
possession of the ball to Southingion.
The third and last offensive drive by
the Pantherb was a breakaway that got as
far as the 19-yard mark before a Knight
defender fouled Steve Lespier of the Panthers.
Because the foul was outside the 18yard
penalty area, the officials could not
allow a penalW kick. Instead, the Panthers
were allotted a direct kick that
sailed over the goal. The official who was
closest to the Plait bench was taking alot
of.verbal abuse bt :ause Plata had w nted
a penalty kick and felt cheated. At the
insistence of one bystander, the official
gave Ray Sweetland a yellow card for"
Jumping up and down in trying to distract
a throw-in by the Platt player.
With less than sixminutes left to play,
the Knights put together the combination
that would seal this win for Coach Dan
Murawski. Mike K trzewa scored the
winning goal with an assist from Scott
Roberge and Jason Matthews.
Coach Bob Melzmuf of the Panthers
was very happy with the way his team
performed. They were determined to do
better than the 7-0 loss they suffered at
home to Southlngton earlier in the sea-
Coach Murawski of the Knights said
that his team had "escaped" and praised
the way the Knights hung in there, play-
Ing under such sloppy condiUor s.
The Blue Knights traveled to Newington
onTuesday for their last regular game
of the season. Newington, 8-6-I, played
the Knights close in their last meeting in
another physical foul-plagued game.
The first dispute of the contest was
the objection ofthe Newington coach that
three Blue Knight players were wearing
gloves. After several minutes of arguing,
Rick Mooney won his ease and the
Knights had them removed.
If this was a tactic of some sort, it
backfired.
The Knights owned this game. especially
in the first half. Jason Matthews
scored on a breakaway then got his second
after Keith Raines rocketed a direct
kick from 40 yards out to set up the goal.
Paul indomenlco scored the third
Knight goal on a backwar bicycle-style
maneuver that sailed high into the net.
Another Haines kick this time to Mike
Kostrzewa was passed over to Dave Gulll
for the Knights" fourth goal. GUIlt to Indomenico
It's been a major factor in the success
of the Southlngton High School girls soccer
team.
The seven-goal, five-assist season of
Elaine 0amber has helped pace the team
to a 9-6 record on the year. But when this
On Italloween afternoon, It was Newington
who provided the treats as they
