The reason they give is the sm e most of the time: The choices offered by both political parties are bad. This year is no exception. People who do not want to vote are using the same George Bush is a pretty pale follow-up to the charismatic Ronald Reagan. who swept an entire country away. right over the likes of Jimmy Carter and Walter Mondale. With the Iran-Contra aft'air coming late in the Reagan presidency. Bush 1 z been questioned as tohis role in the whole deal - and many people are notbuyinghis claim to ignorance. And even die-hard leyal-to-the-party l publicans have to be eringing at the thought of voting for a man who referred to Sept. 7 as Pearl Harbor Day. But then there is Michael Dukakis. Some Maesachusetts residents have said they have high hopes that Dukakls will be elected -- because they want him out of Massachusetts. Under Dukakis. the Boston Harboris a filthy, polluted mess. "l .ls Is especially not good considering the East Coast's summer bout with medical waste on its beaches. Dukakis has been called soft on crime. And his vice-president seems to have more experience and know-how than he does. Both presidential candidates have run a negative campaign, and have muddied the issues with their negativism. In the state races, we have it a little easier. This year's mudslinging actually seems to have been kept to a minimum. There are some candidates who are truing,todiscuss issues. . ", ,...... But there are still those who have.resarted to dirty campaign tacttc In the race for the U.S. House of Representatives. for example. Jim GriflLn and incumbent Nancy Johnson sniped back and forth. Gr/ffin accused Johnson of voting for rapists when she voted against a piece of gun control legislation, and Johnson had a run-in with some Grifl supporters at a parade. Supporters accused her of trying to grab their "Griffin for Cor -esa" lapel buttons, and people in the Griffin camp retaliated by having buttons made which said, "Grab this. Nancy." Sometimes, sorting out the issues is hard when there is mud being slung, and going out to vote can seem a pretty discouraging task. But we ought to do it anyway. Why not? Someone is going to get elected, with or without us. We might as well have some input. If we think hard enough about the candidates, we might decide that there is one who does have Jus, a little bit more to offer. Or. maybe we might go ahead and vote straight Republican -- except ofcourse, for Lowell Welcker - or maybe, straight Dernoorat- except of course, for Jt eph Lieberman. Ifwe"re really fed up. maybe we can find someone we like in an independent party. Or. we can write in a candidate. Whatever. Surely there is some ideal we want to protect, or same point we'd I/ke to make by voting. We shouldn't waste the opportunity. Women marched for the right to vote. Blacks fought for it. In some countries, people only wish they had it. So go ahead. Get out there and vote for somebody. And don't slip in the mu i. J.S. Senate race hot between Weicker, Lieberman Suddenly, the Connecticut race to watch is the U.S. Senate battle between Lowell P. Weicker, the Republican incum- ,x bent, and Attorney General Joseph Lieberman, the Democratic challenger. The most recent statewide poll. conducted by the InstRute for Social Inquiry at the University ofCormectlcut, rated the contest as a dead heat. That came as a shocker, because earlier polls had put Weicker ahead by a comfortable 14 points. Pundits and political Insiders question the numbers, but the poll has put a new focus on the fight. With two weeks to go, the poll has energized both camps. They are preparing for a alugfest to the finish. Wcickcr started as the heavy favorite. Early polls showed him well ahead• Lleberman received the Demccrstic nomination because he wanted it and because few Democrats wanted to challenge the incumbent. As attorney general, too, Lleberman has built a salid reputation for himself. He is credited with doing more in the interest of state citizens than any general of the modern era. But few political types viewed the Lleberman candidacy as a serious threat. Weicker has gained the endorsement ofthe big la"t r groups -- support usually reserved for-Democrats. Hmvever, Lteberman hasn't been seared offbythe big guy. He has waged an intelligent and aggressive campaign, fueled by enough money to make it a real As t e underdog, he has challenged Welcker's voting and attendance records. He has charged that Welcker played too much hooky in the Senate. His TV commercials and verbal assaults about alien dance apparently have caught the attention of voters. Welcker has battled back, arguing that his attendance record Is as good as that of U.S. Sen. Christopher Dodd. a Democrat. In addition. Weicker has charged that Lleberman missed more votes than anyone in two of the 10 years he served in the state Senate. After release ofthe ,lead-heat poll, Ihe candidates took off their gloves. This campaign, which looked at first like a routine re-election, hasbeen transformed into an exciting, bare-knuckles brawl. The presidential election has been a numbing affair. SO the confrontation between Welcker and Lleberman has " +++++ ++: ' to the :'What happens Machismo, - - - what is it? We both came armed to the teeth with charm - and tiptoed around that self-importanee I spoke of with a facade of genuine humility. Everything was going beautifully. We had both brought delicate historical baggage with us - life's disappointments. lffe's victories - and a preparedness to talk about that baggage with wistful candor. I stirred my Scotch and listened to her talk about her 12-year-old son. 1 took a sip. The straw went up my nose -- and stuckl The pain was excruciating! Blood ran down to my lip. - poured onto my new shirt, onto my trousers, and onto a salt blue tablecloth. How does one extract a straw embedded in his nose gracefully? I pulled it out, and wafted in agony. Naturally, the mood was broken. She forgave me. of course. She never saw me again, but she forgave me. That's all sprit milk. Why dwell on it. Last weekend I helped two friends move a piano. Moving a p nq should not be llfe-threatenlng - but we all approach the occasion with same amount ofanticipatory trepidation. This particular move was from the back of a truck, through a narrow doorway, and up a twisting flight of staira to a second-floor apartment. The piano, an upright, weighed somewhere bctw e 500 pounds and five tons. When we approached the base of the stslrs. I said to my two comrades. "Let me take the bottom," I was promoting some foolish almost-40-adage - the older you get, the bulkier, and therefore, the stronger.
