<strong>University</strong> Success<br />

College <strong>of</strong> <strong>Engine</strong>ering Awaits New Facility<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> broke ground in May 2011 <strong>for</strong> a new, 39,000-squarefoot<br />

research building that will house the National Center <strong>for</strong><br />

Education <strong>an</strong>d Research on Corrosion <strong>an</strong>d Materials Per<strong>for</strong>m<strong>an</strong>ce.<br />

<strong>The</strong> center w<strong>as</strong> launched in 2010 <strong>an</strong>d <strong>of</strong>fers the first baccalaureate<br />

program in corrosion engineering in the U.S.<br />

<strong>The</strong> building, scheduled to open in winter 2011-12, will be home<br />

to the National Center <strong>for</strong> Education <strong>an</strong>d Research in Corrosion<br />

<strong>an</strong>d Materials Reliability. It will contain laboratories <strong>an</strong>d faculty<br />

<strong>of</strong>fices supporting the delivery <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>’s undergraduate<br />

program in corrosion engineering, part <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong><br />

Chemical <strong>an</strong>d Biomolecular <strong>Engine</strong>ering.<br />

<strong>The</strong> facility also will house the Timken <strong>Engine</strong>ered Surfaces<br />

Laboratory (See “Open Innovation on p. 16), <strong>as</strong> well <strong>as</strong> other<br />

labs that will conduct sensors research funded by the Ohio<br />

Third Frontier initiative, through the Wright Center <strong>for</strong><br />

Sensor Systems <strong>Engine</strong>ering. <strong>The</strong> departments <strong>of</strong> Electrical<br />

<strong>an</strong>d Computer <strong>Engine</strong>ering <strong>an</strong>d Mech<strong>an</strong>ical <strong>Engine</strong>ering<br />

will direct the sensors research.<br />

UA President on Inside Business Power 100 List<br />

Dr. Luis Proenza appeared once again in 2011 on Inside Business’<br />

“Power 100” list <strong>of</strong> the most influential leaders in Northe<strong>as</strong>t Ohio,<br />

coming in at No. 18. In its list, Inside Business noted Proenza’s<br />

participation on the national Council <strong>of</strong> Competitiveness <strong>an</strong>d<br />

the <strong>University</strong>’s shared-services arr<strong>an</strong>gement with Lorain County<br />

Community College, which the magazine said “could become<br />

a model <strong>for</strong> regional cooperation in education.”<br />

Center <strong>for</strong> Child Development Earns National Accreditation<br />

<strong>The</strong> Center <strong>for</strong> Child Development (CCD) through <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> Akron’s College <strong>of</strong> Education, jointly sponsored with the<br />

College <strong>of</strong> Health Sciences <strong>an</strong>d Hum<strong>an</strong> Services (HSHS), h<strong>as</strong> earned<br />

accreditation from the National Association <strong>for</strong> the Education<br />

<strong>of</strong> Young Children (NAEYC) – the nation’s leading org<strong>an</strong>ization<br />

<strong>of</strong> early childhood pr<strong>of</strong>essionals. <strong>The</strong> accreditation is valid <strong>for</strong><br />

the next five years.<br />

To earn NAEYC accreditation, the CCD went through <strong>an</strong><br />

extensive self-study process, me<strong>as</strong>uring the program <strong>an</strong>d its<br />

services against the 10 NAEYC early childhood program<br />

st<strong>an</strong>dards <strong>an</strong>d more th<strong>an</strong> 400 related accreditation criteria.<br />

<strong>The</strong> program received NAEYC accreditation after <strong>an</strong> on-site<br />

visit by NAEYC <strong>as</strong>sessors. <strong>The</strong> CCD received <strong>an</strong> excellent<br />

rating, meeting all st<strong>an</strong>dards <strong>an</strong>d criteria.<br />
