Nursing Professor
Endowed Lecture
Evelyn M. Tovey, former faculty member
at UA’s College of Nursing, bequeathed
to the college a gift in 2004 to benefit
the Dean’s Distinguished Lectureship,
an annual event that brings a renowned
nursing leader to campus to deliver a
formal lecture and meet with student
and faculty groups to discuss nursing
leadership and trends in health care.
This year, the College of Nursing
celebrated the 13th Annual
Distinguished Lecture Series on
March 23. The distinguished lecturer
was Joanne Disch, PhD, RN, FAAN, a
Clinical Professor and Director of the
Katharine J. Densford International Center
for Nursing Leadership and the University
Of Minnesota School Of Nursing.
Tovey’s forward thinking supports
the College of Nursing in sustaining key
initiatives in to meet the college’s vision to
provide excellent academic programs and
promote student success and will provide
outstanding learning opportunities for today
and tomorrow’s nurses for years to come.

Bridgestone
Americas Provides
Equipment for
Polymer Research
The Akron-based Bridgestone Americas
Center for Research and Technology
(BART) has provided close to $500,000
in scientific-use X-ray equipment to The
University of Akron College of Polymer
Science and Polymer Engineering in
exchange for $1 from UA’s senior vice
president, provost and chief operating
officer, Dr. Michael Sherman.
“The X-ray equipment is key to
our polymer materials structures and
morphological research,” said Dr. Stephen
Z.D. Cheng, dean of the College of
Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering.
“Our donation of this equipment to

the cooperative and close relationship
between UA and Bridgestone Americas,”
said BART Vice President of Research

SUMMIT COLLEGE news
Hospitality Program
Partners With China
Jamal Feerasta, professor of hospitality
management in Summit College,
conducted seminars on the hospitality
industry in China at Sias International
University in Xin Zheng and Henan
University in Kaifeng in December, 2010.
Feerasta presented two-day workshops
for undergraduate and graduate students
in the tourism and hotel management
programs.

“It’s important for colleges and
universities to form partnerships around
the world. This will satisfy the need for
trained supervisors and managers in the
growing hospitality industry,” said Stanley
Silverman, dean of UA’s Summit College.
WAYNE COLLEGE news
MBA Program at
Medina County
University Center,
Wayne College
The University of Akron’s College of
Business Administration will launch
its first cohort of students in Fall 2011
for the weekend Master of Business
Administration. Students can take courses
taught by full-time MBA faculty from UA
using distance learning technologies at the
Medina County University Center and
Wayne College every other Saturday. The
in-class experiences will be supplemented
and enhanced with online technology.
In addition, during lunch each Saturday,
the MBA cohort students will have the
opportunity to speak with a panel of
business executives in an informal
question and answer session.
