INTRODUCTION TO THE UA GRADUATE SCHOOL The University of Akron Graduate School provides a quality program of education by offering advanced courses in various fields of knowledge, thus creating opportunities to develop and apply research techniques, and advancing students’ expertise through the efforts of distinguished graduate faculty. In addition to these primary objectives, the Graduate School is committed to the continuous development of practices that reflect national and international standards of excellence in graduate education. Numerous challenges, both external and internal, to these objectives have emerged over the past 10 years. Changes in state-level funding formulas and major recessions in the United States economy have threatened the quality of graduate education. Further, post-9/11 national security restrictions have posed new and unique barriers to recruiting international graduate students. Restricted university budgets, competition for limited resources, and the reorganization of academic and institutional priorities are some of the more formidable internal challenges facing the Graduate School. In the face of these challenges, The University of Akron Graduate School carefully and responsibly carries out measures necessary to meet our objectives. In the following sections, we review the activities of the Graduate School over the past decade ranging from 2001-present are reviewed. The intent is to give an accurate snapshot of the growth in our enrollment, and range of responsibilities in the following areas: Graduate Applications Received Enrollment of Students in Graduate Level Coursework Financial Assistance Awarded to Graduate Students Degrees Awarded Graduate Programs and Faculty Current Initiatives Future of the Graduate School. 6
