Inclusion in the database for research and commercial purposes: The member will be
asked to confirm they accept the use of their de-identified data in the BR database. If
they decline, the test will proceed as usual, but the data will never form part of any
database.
Cognitive Test Items (30-40 minutes): Descriptions and caveats
The member will be given full written, screen instructions during the test, generated by the
computer, but if the clinician or member wants to preview what they will be working with, they
should read on below:
1: Finger Tapping
Testing procedure: Using the dominant hand only the member is required to tap the space bar
on the keyboard with only the tip of the index (pointing) finger as quickly as possible for 60
seconds as counted down by a clock icon on the screen. Both the number of taps, as well as
the variability of time taken from each strike of the finger to the next, are measured and reported
on.
The other fingers remain inert on the table surface, palm down. The dependent variable is
total number of taps with the index finger on the dominant hand only. The wrist should not be
used in a flapping motion, just the forefinger should rapidly move up and down. The test is
tiring, it is meant to be, and draws on large areas of the brain for its rapid movement.
Note: as with all our tests, there is now a gap between this and the next subtest. Some
members may use this for brief bathroom breaks only if absolutely necessary to maintain
their attention and focus. The member is prompted to let the computer know when they
are ready to begin the next test, giving them time to absorb the test instructions.
Impulsive children should be warned to read the test instructions carefully, but this
prompt should not be given every time, only once, as their lack of diligence is diagnostic,
and should not be removed as a variable by adult scaffolding or surrogacy of control.
