At the University of Calgary we discover, create, innovate, build — and through
the mobilization of knowledge we transform our world. Our researchers and
students solve problems, meet society’s needs, and answer not just the
questions of today, but anticipate the questions of tomorrow.
The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada defines “knowledge mobilization” as moving
knowledge into active service for the broadest possible common good. Knowledge mobilization involves working
collaboratively to produce and share knowledge and making that knowledge accessible and useful to society.
Mobilizing knowledge to enhance the quality of life
The U of C is a leader in cross-sectoral research, partnering with academia, government, private corporations,
non-profit and voluntary organizations and philanthropic foundations. By working together, we combine the
experience, insight and focus of community-based specialists with the foundational principles of academic
research.
Our work directly and indirectly improves quality of life by providing solutions, direction and understanding, as
well as by creating a scientific foundation upon which others can build. Our integrated approach delivers
comprehensive results. Together we bring solutions to society’s most significant social and policy issues.
In Issue 1, Research in Action: Creating Wealth, we explored how the U of C is strengthening Canada and
building the global economy by creating new businesses, launching new technologies and advancing science and
medicine. In Issue 2, Research in Action: Mobilizing Knowledge, we share the stories of 16 U of C researchers
who are collaborating with research partners from all walks of life to find solutions to society’s challenges.
