Our Infinitec program continues steady growth, despite school cutbacks. Thanks in part to a $367,000 grant from Ronald McDonald House Charities, the program is expanding beyond Illinois and Kansas into Georgia and Minnesota. In the first year alone, we expect to serve 16,000 students age 5 to 18 in Georgia and another 9,500 in Minnesota. We look forward to opening new opportunities for students with specialized needs, like Jonathan and Andrew. Jonathan, a high school student with autism, uses a DynaVox V to communicate with his teachers, classmates and family. Andrew, finishing junior high, takes advantage of InfiniTEXT to read textbooks and Andrew the novels he’s assigned for English class. >>> see Andrew’s story
Ramp Up is seeing a surge in requests for our help but we just need an influx of funding to keep up. Right now, there are 200 people on the waiting list, and more calls coming in daily. Why support Ramp Up? Just look at the numbers: It costs UCP between $5,000 and $35,000 to make a home handicap-accessible. By contrast, it costs Illinois taxpayers $147,000 to provide an individual with institutionalized care for just one year.
