Ontario. He married REBECCA CLARK 03 Mar 1780, daughter of WILLIAM CLARK and CATHERINE
MCDOWELL. She was born 01 Sep 1762, and died in Port Hope Ontario.

Thomas was born in Buck's County Pennsylvania in Bensalem Twp. in 1753. He married Rebecca Clark on
March 3, 1780 there as well. He served in the British Army prior to 1781. Thomas was in Captain
Harrison's Company EF 1780 (s3, v6, 112-119)

A Clark family history posted on the genealogy.com genforum site lists a William Clark born Dec. 26,
1722 who married a Rebecca and had an Elizabeth b. 1754 and a Joseph b. 1756. Rebecca then died and
William married Catherine McDowell. From Catherine the first child was a Rebecca born Sept. 1, 1762.

died Abt. 1860 in Port Hope Ontario. He married LEVINA CRYDERMAN, daughter of MICHAEL
CRYDERMAN and MARY HICKS. She died in Port Hope Ontario.
Notes for LEVINA CRYDERMAN:
Levina's Order-in-Council was dated Jan. 14, 1812. It was located at Lot 33, Concession 5 of Hamilton
Township and is still in the Goheen family in 2005.

Notes for JOHN GOHEEN:

In the 1861 census John owned fifty acres at Conc. 5 part of lot 29 Hamilton Twp. He
sold this farm and moved over to Hope Twp. Then he turned that farm over to his son and
moved to the Lindsay area. He was known as a vet, was very spry and could jump a fence
at 85.
The Wesleyan Methodist Baptisms found in the Ontario Genealogical Society London for
Hope Township Volume 1 lists the children of John and Ophelia who were baptized in
that church and their birth dates.
John B. 25, April, 1836
John Goheen married Ophelia Hogboom on May 5, 1828. It is recorded in the Anglican
Church Archives Toronto and in the Cavan Marriage Records 1825-1836. John was
living in Hamilton Twp. and Ophelia in Hope. Joseph Thompson was the officiating
minister and the witnesses were Abraham Bowin and Charles Gonat.
The 1848 census shows John, a carpenter, living at lot 27, concession 8 of Hope Twp.

John, 43; Ofila, 41; Daniel, 17; John, 15; Thomas, 8; James, 7; Joseph, 3; Susan, 14;
Mary, 12; Lovina, 11; Ophelia, 11; Jane, 5; Ann, 1;
The 1881 census shows John, 72, Catherine 68 and George 14 going to school.
1884, 5 and 6 Farmers' Directory shows John farming on Conc. 7, Lot 21 of Ops Twp.
near Lindsay.
John died in Victoria County and his death certificate was signed by Joseph Little. The
doctor was Dr. Harrison.
Notes for OPHELIA HOGEBOOM:
Ophelia had two children from Henry young Zufelt before marrying John Goheen
who seemed to alternate between the Goheen and Zufelt names. They were Emily and
Nelson.
Notes for CATHERINE MAYBEE AVERY:
Catherine Maybee Avery Goheen was a widow of a Nehemiah Avery. Her parents were
Godfrey Maybee and Maria Crowther. Catherine was born in Hollowell Ontario and was
living in Fenelon Township when John married her on Sept. 16, 1872. John was 63 and
she was 57 at the time. Her son, George was born in 1867 so must have been an Avery
but took the name Goheen. Perhaps John adopted him.
John and Catherine (Linnia) were married by James Brock. Both were Wesleyan
Methodist, Witnesses were Charles Davis and Dorinda Davis of Lindsay.

Notes for ISRAEL SR. GOHEEN:

In 1840 he had 3 boys and 4 girls according to the census of that year.
In 1848 he lived at Lot 34 concession 5 with a total of 14 persons.
In 1850 he was still at lot 34 with ten person. (He would have been forty years years old
now).
By 1873 he was 62 and living at lot 29 concession 5, which Zilpah Tennison's family had
bought for her. It later became the farm of her son, John.
The 1881 census of Hamilton Twp. states that Israel was 60, born in Ontario, Methodist,
Irish and a farmer.
iii. REBECCA GOHEEN, b. 1813; d. 28 Mar 1844; m. WILLIAM MOORE; b. County
Armagh Northern Ireland.

Lived first in Cavan Twp. then came to Hamilton Twp and lived at lot 25
C. 5 The Hamilton Twp. assessment roles show William Moore living at Lot 25, C. 5
with eight persons in the household in 1848. William was a miller.

Notes for CHARLES GOHEEN:
Charles married Elizabeth Boyd around 1841. He died at age 31 leaving her a widow
with Mary. James and Charles. The 1861 census of Hope Twp. shows Mary, aged 18 and
single and Charles, aged 13 living with their grandfather, Robert Boyd, who was born in
Ireland, aged 72, a widower and a pensioner. They lived at lot 29, Conc. 10, next house to
Robert Bullied of interest because a Bullied also married a Goheen.
Charles' will is found in Volume A No. 397, Reel GS 3885 of Hope Twp. Land Records
In the 1851 census of Hope Township Elizabeth Boyd, Charles' widow was listed as born
in Scotland and her children were Mary Ann 9, James Henry, 6 and Charles 4

Notes for HENRY GOHEEN:
The Ontario Archives Marriage Register for Northumberland/Durham states that Henry
Goheen married Ann Lyttle, Hamilton, by banns. Witnesses David Lyttle and Nelle
Brown by James Nales or Hales Canadian Wesleyan New Connexion
The 1881 census of Hamilton Twp. states that Henry was 58,was born in Ontario, was
Irish and a Methodist as well as being a farmer. His wife Ann is 59 and also Irish and his
children are listed
as David, 35 school teacher, John, 32 farm labourer, William 29, farmer, Thomas H. 21,
farmer, Mary J. 24 and Almira 21. Reel C13240 Page 9 Hamilton.
Bethel News of Nov. 14, 1887 states that Henry Goheen still remains very ill. There is
little hope of his ultimate recovery.
Nov. 30, 1887 The funeral of the late Mr. Henry Goheen took place on Tuesday of last
week and was very largely attended. Rev. Mr. Lloyd conducted services at both residence
and cemetery.
In 1982, Raymond Goheen Sr., Grandson of Henry, told me, Doris Goheen, the following
account of how Thomas Junior's farm at lot 33 Concession 5, Hamilton Township was
divided up.
"The eldest son, John, was given the north forty-five acres. We call it the Etcher Place
now. The third son, Michael, was given the next forty-five acres where Winfred farm is
now. My grandfather, Henry, had the next twelve acres and then Charles, next door, go
the next thirteen acres. As I understand it, Israel, the second son, was given thirteen acres
along the west side of the south hundred. That adds up to one hundred and twenty-eight
which leaves seventy-two acres which went to Jesse, the youngest son.
My grandfather, Henry, traded his twelve acres of cleared land for fifty acres of uncleared
land across the road. The land across the road was called the Fisher Estate. It goes from
the old house across the road down to the south end of it. He had to cut down the trees
and dig out the pine stumps. Grandfather Henry built a log cabin on the north end of this
fifty acres but when spring came he found his log cabin was in a pond of water.
George had the fifty acres north of Grandfather Henry's of this Fisher grant. He sold one
acre to grandfather Henry of his land so grandfather could build a little house up on the
knoll there in 1855. My father was four years old when it was built. A man by the name
of Davy Watt bought the log house for five dollars worth of hens and moved it up the
road to the brow of the hill. He either sold or donated the east half of that to his brother
Joseph and George and Joseph cleared that north forty-nine acres.
Senior and Junior Thomas Goheens were devout Anglicans and the first half of Thomas
Jr.'s family stayed with the Anglican church. Thomas Jr. and Thomas Sr. were buried in
the first plot in St. Mark's Anglican Church. They're buried in the north-east corner. St.
Mark's Church was organized in 1822, thirty years after the Goheens settled near there.
They may have had something to do with that little log cabin that was the first school
where Trinity College stands.

George and Clarissa's children were all born in Canada except Alzina who was 2 in the
1870 census and listed as being born in Michigan so George and Clarissa went to
Michigan between 1860 and 1867. George was the Justice of the Peace and conducted
marriages. He married Joseph Hollenbeck and Sarah Thomas. Joseph was Mary Goheen's
son.

Notes for JOSEPH GOHEEN:
The Tweedsmuir History of Hopeville- Swinton in Grey County has the following
account of the family of Joseph Goheen.
In the year 1700 Goheens from Northern Ireland came to Pennsylvania. After the civil
war in 1776 Thomas Goheen came to Canada as a U.E.L., settled north of Port Hope, had
four sons. (The account then says that the youngest was Thomas but this is incorrect as
the youngest was Jesse and the eldest was Thomas.) Thomas had six sons and two
daughters . The fifth of these, Joseph, married in 1843 to Statira Scarlett, farmed near
Port Hope for eighteen years and had seven children. . In 1866 he sold the farm and
moved to Proton Township, lot 24, Con. 15. Mrs. Goheen died in 1905, Joseph in 1911.
The family were: George, Alexander, Sanford, Robert, Ezra, Emma and Henry and Eber
who died as an infant.

Notes for MARY GOHEEN:
David (Jesse?) and Mary were listed as living on Lot 33, Conc, 5 Hamilton Twp. in the
1848 Hamilton Township list with son Joseph born in 1846.
District of Newcastle Marriages 1838-1852 records the marriage of David Hollenbech
and Mary Goheen. Sanilac County Michigan Death Records 1862-73 (which were copied
in the Ontario Genealogical Society Magazine Families in February, 1986) records the
death of a Henry Spencer on May 23, 1870 at age 55 and he was born in Canada. It also
records the death of a baby on October 14, 1870 in Speaker Michigan where Mary lived.
The baby's name was Martha Ann and she died at 8 months 14 days five months after the
death of her father, Henry.
The 1880 Census for Speaker Township, Sanilac County Michigan Reel #606 Hoyt
Public Library, Saginaw Michigan lists a William Smith 52 and wife Mary 50 and a large
number of children. It looks as if the seven children who are listed first, Deborah, 24,
Louella, 22, Edward, 18, Clarissa, 16, Alfred, 14, Louvina, 13, and Elizabeth, 11 are all
his from a previous marriage ( A William Smith married a Clara Hollenbech so she could
have been the first wife and mother of these children).
The census then goes on to list a number of grandchildren of this William Smith and they
are George, Delmer, Bertha May and Gerta.
The next children listed are noted as being his stepchildren and they are Spencers and so
quite likely the children of Mary Goheen Hollenbeck and Henry Spencer.

They are Abner Spencer (21), Jesse Spencer (19), William Spencer (17), Louvina
Spencer (15) , Albert Spencer (13) and Alfred Spencer (13) twins,

The 1878 Atlas of Northumberland County shows him living at lot 23, on the north half
of concession 10 of Cramahe with 100 acres and lot 11 (the south 90) of Concession 1 of
Percy Twp. He is buried in the Stone Cemetery just north of Morganston in plot 44-45.
3. CHARLES 3 GOHEEN (THOMAS 2 , THOMAS 1 ) was born 07 May 1783 in Port Hope Ontario. He
married NANCY STEVENS, daughter of JAMES STEVENS and DOUGLAS. She was born 1793.

His name is listed in the Index of Land Claim Certificates of Upper Canada Militiament Who Served in the
War of 1812-1814 on pages 1015-1016. It says Charles Gohean 2nd Flank Company 1st Regiment
Northumberland Militia.
Notes for NANCY STEVENS:
Nancy was a sister of Simeon Stevens who was the first white baby born in Port Hope. He was born in
1795 and later married Elizabeth Goheen, the sister of Nancy's husband, Charles Goheen.
Their father was James Stevens born in Nine Partners, Dutchess County, New York. He married a Douglas
who was born around 1765. James' father was Benjamin born abour 1733 in Quaker Hill New York and his
mother was Hopestill Shaw born about 1735 in Lansbury, Mass.

deceased by this time. (This was her granddaughter Mary's home).
At age 82, Nancy was a widow and living in Speaker Township, Sanilac County, Michigan with her
youngest son, Nathan, his wife Ellen (Zavitz) and their daughter, Mary C. who was 9 at the time. (Recorded
in the 1880 Census of Michigan, Sanilac County. Hoyt Public Library Saginaw, Michigan Reel 606).

Notes for BRYAN GOHEEN:
In 1853, advertisements were place in the Cobourg Star for railroad labourers. A dollar a
day was offered. The wages attracted Bryan who helped to build the Cobourg and
Peterborough Railroad which only lasted fifty years. Cholera broke out and Bryan lost
four children to the dread disease.

South part of Lot #26 5th Concession Hamilton as described in deed from Thomas
Thompson to Bryan Goheen registered 30th Sept. 1853 45 acres.
( This appears to be the same land that Bryan's father Charles bought from Alex Culross
in 1833 and which he transferred to William in 1843 and which was transferred back to
Charles in 1844. Charles must have then transferred it to Bryan who seems to have lost it
in the above seizure.)
In 1878 Bryan was living on the west half of lot 4 Concession 2 of Alnwick Twp on 50
acres.

Notes for ELIZABETH GOHEEN:
Elizabeth Goheen was given two hundred acres of land at Lot 3 Concession 5 of Hamilton Township as the
daughter of "persons who had adhered to the Unity of the Empire". The survey was done on April 15th,
1809 and the Registration on July 6th, 1804. It was granted by the Lieutenant Governor's Order in Council
on Dec. 6th 1808. It was located by W. George Playter. The lieutenant governor was Gore.

Elizabeth married Simeon Stevens, the first white baby born in Port Hope. They sold their land grant and
left the area.
Other Goheens were migrating to Michigan at this time. Simeon's sister, Nancy Stevens married Charles
Goheen and they went to Speaker Township, Sanilac County, Michigan. Nancy was a widow at 82 and
living there with her son, Nathan, and his wife, Ellen, and their daughter Mary C. when the 1880 census of
Speaker Township, Sanilac County, was taken in 1880.
Notes for SIMEON STEVENS:
An early land grant was granted to Simeon Stevens at lot 13 of concession 12 of Otonabee Twp.
Peterborough County in 1821. Record G2
Trent University records that the children of Simon and Elizabeth Stevens named Israel, Rebecca and Jesse,
were baptized in Otonabee Twp. in 1826. Israel married Martha Gifford in 1845 and a no name Stevens
was buried in Otonabee in 1850. G2 In 1821 Simeon Stevens bought the east half and west half of Lot 13
Concession 12 of Otonabee Township.

Samuel was born in Vermont after the family had left Pennsylvania and were on their way to Canada. He
received his land grant of two hundred acres by Order- in- Council on May 20th, 1817, The 1850 census
shows him at Lot 35 Concession 2 of Hamilton Twp. with one acre cleared. He died of apoplexy and the
doctor was Dr. L. B. Powers. The Methodist registrar for Northumberland was V. Sanders

6. JESSE 3 GOHEEN (THOMAS 2 , THOMAS 1 ) was born 24 Nov 1800, and died 12 May 1886 in Port Hope
Ontario. He married MARY ANN RUBIDGE 27 Oct 1834. She died Dec 1887.
Notes for JESSE GOHEEN:
A Land Patents Index of May 21, 1823 shows Jesse Goheen selling 200 acres of Lot 9 Conc. 5 of Asphodel
Twp. Issued July 2, to A. Mercer. BB241 Jesse must have sold his 200 acre UEL grant because he was
taking over the family farm.
The 1871 census lists Jesse as 67, born in Ontario and a Wesleyan Methodist and a labourer. His wife is
Mary aged 59 and born in England, Son William,22, is at home as is Rebecca, 23 and Ellen, 16.

Jesse's Obituary as it appeared in the Port Hope Guide May 14, 1886
The oldest native of these United Counties died at his residence on Elgin Street. Born in 1798 on Lot 35
2nd concession, he owned the farm on which he was born at the time of his death. His father, the late
Thomas Goheen, was a U.E.L., a native of the state of Pennsylvania; removed from Philadelphia shortly
after the close of the American Revolution and settled in the twp. of Hamilton. Mr. Goheen assisted in
clearing the land where Port Hope now stands. He was a quiet, inoffensive man, never mingled in politics.
He leaves a widow, four sons, four daughters and a large number of grandchildren. Thomas made a will

named his wife in both wills so he must have predeceased her.

Church, conducted the service at both residence and cemetery.

Thomas Henry had a livery office in Port Hope.
Thomas Henry was a widower when he died in Toronto at 24 Yorkveille Avenue, the
home of his daughter, Ida Ralph. The informant of the death was his brother, John
Goheen of Port Hope. (No. 6873, Vol. 4, P. 452, Reel 322)
His obituary was in the Port Hope Guide Jan. 1, 1926, page 8. It says he was in his 90th
year. It mentions he died at his daughters, Mrs. Ralph, and had a son, Guy, of Welcome
and brothers, William and John of Port Hope and sisters Margaret of Bloomsgrove Ave.
and Mrs. Archie Clark of Campbellford.

Northumberland-Durham Marriage Register 1870-73 at Trent U. shows mary Goheen of
Port Hope, born Hamilton Twp., d/o Jesse and Mary Ann Goheen, married William
Cochrane, 34, of Hamilton Twp., born Osnabruck, farmer, s/o John and Jane Cochrane,
by Rev. James Campbell , Episcopal Methodist, Port Hope.

Information given to me by Audrey Cochrane West of Cobourg states that Mary Goheen
was the second wife of William Cochrane who had five children from his first wife but
only one from Mary, Annie Bertha. William and Mary lived near Baltimore and Mary
died when Annie Bertha was only six years old. She was then raised by members of the
Goheen family. Annie Bertha went to the United States and worked as a secretary for a
Mr. Harriman who ran the Pennsylvania Railroad and she married him. They later lived
in Washington D.C. Annie Bertha died in Lewisburg Pennsylvania. Annie Bertha is
buried in Lent's Cemetery at Precious Corners on the Dale Road near Cobourg where her
mother, Mary, is buried as well.
It is likely that her grandparents, Jesse and Mary Ann raised Annie Bertha. The Harriman
connection was still mentioned at the home of their son, Charles, in the 1950's.

Letitia Clark had a brother, Archie, who married Ellen Goheen, sister of Letitia's
husband, William J. Other siblings in the Clark family were: Duncan of Campbellford,
Charlie, Walter and Howard.
Duncan's children were: Bessie who married Charlie Goodman and lived across the road
from her aunt Letitia; Jim who farmed at Healey Falls; Jean, Catherine and Bertha who
were teachers and never married and Hester who was an army nurse and married Norman
Greeson of St. Mary's. (Information provided by Jim Goodman, son of Bessie Clark

Margaret did not marry. She was listed as Miss Margaret when her brother, Thomas
Henry's obituary was written up in the Guide. She was living on Bloomsgrove Ave. Port
Hope.
