Alumni Bookshelf Our Breast Cancer Journey: How to Kick Cancer’s Ass Corey ‘97, ‘98G and Michelle Lefevre Joyce ‘97 Corey and Michelle Lefevre Joyce provide a painstakingly realistic account of the battle they went through together, dealing with breast cancer. Michelle, a former Division I softball player for UMaine, discovered a lump in her breast on new Year’s Eve in 2009, and a week later received the devastating news that it was cancerous. Corey, obviously devastated by his wife’s diagnosis, sought literature for advice on how to cope. They both realized there was no literature that offered a pragmatic insight in dealing with cancer, and there was no material published about easing the grief of a spouse. During Michelle’s eight-month ordeal, which included many surgeries, a partial mastectomy, and weeks of chemotherapy, Corey found writing to be a therapeutic outlet. Although publishing a book was never the couple’s original intention, Michelle’s matter-of-fact attitude, and Corey’s blunt and satirical writing proved to be entertaining as well as a great resource for others battling cancer. - Review by Jennifer Stoudt ‘12 Scuba Gold Ben Thomas ’56, ’61G From the first few pages des - crib ing the sighting of a German sub - marine in the Gulf of Maine to a race against the clock in the final pages, Scuba Gold is a fast-paced book of scuba diving, espionage, and young love. When a member of a diving team finds a gold pendant in Casco Bay off Portland, Maine, the discovery makes news around the globe. Two people with conflicting interests arrive in Portland to search for the remainder of the treasure lost in Casco Bay. Lee Thomas McCall, a young woman from western Montana, is seeking the pendant for her family as a lost heirloom. German military officer Heinrich von Brockner is seeking the pendant for more sinister reasons. A member of the team is murdered shortly after the find, team leader Matt Banner is the prime suspect, and there is a race against the clock to find the missing pendant and clear his name. Thomas uses his knowledge of the Casco Bay area to describe the region. His research into scuba diving will appeal to scuba diving enthusiasts, while his story of conspiracy and espionage will appeal to those hooked on conspiracy theories. And for those who enjoy reading of young hearts and passions, well, there is a little of that too. - Review by Mellissia Richards ‘02, ‘12 Dreams of Wolves: Adventures in the Carpathian Mountains of Transylvania Alan E. Sparks ’80 Eleven years ago, Alan Sparks ’80 had a bit of a midlife crisis. He qualified for a voluntary early retirement package from the large telecommunications firm where he had been employed for nearly 21 years. His original plans of unwinding from “40 years of continual effort and stress” rapidly changed. Within 10 months of retirement, he lost his two best friends and spent a few months drifting. The drifting eventually led to Zarnesti, a small village in Romania, and the Carpathian Large Carnivore Project (CLCP), deep in the heart of Dracula Country. Sparks dove into the project, which entailed tracking wolves through deep snow and rough terrain, while interacting with the team he joined and immersing himself in the community. The book transports you to a place where religion is ruled by superstition and death is not hidden away and whispered about. Sparks describes the daily activities of the CLCP in detail, and describes the history of the area, combined with rich scientific history and information. His interactions with the wildlife, the community, and the wolves of the CLCP show not only a fascinating place, but how a jarring change of scene can help a man heal. -Review by Mellissia Richards ‘02, ‘12 The Dam Committee Earl Smith ’62 The Dam Committee is a captivating, comical mystery novel based in a small, fictional Maine town called Belfry. Anyone who is familiar with small town life in Maine can identify with the setting, the characters, and the lifestyle. Earl Smith, former dean at Colby College and public relations journalist, writes a humorous novel about a murder mystery that takes place in this small town. Smith says, “If the book has any attraction, it is because people who live in Maine can easily identify with the characters.” Smith uses colorful characters to bring his story to life. The plot unfurls when two friends, Harry, a neat and somewhat unsettled man; and nibber, the exact opposite; witness a murder scene. And then they discover a suitcase full of money.
