1. Mission Statement of CNIS The Center for Network and Information Security (CNIS) is to assist the university fulfilling its mission of providing high quality and affordable education to students. CNIS is focusing its efforts of research, teaching, and public service on critical issues of cyber security and related areas. General Description and Goals Network and information security (NIS) is a fast growing new area in industrial development, academic curriculum, and theoretical research. NIS involves multiple disciplines including computer science, computer engineering, and mathematics. Listed below are the purposes and goals of CNIS. 1.1. Purpose 1. Provide a structure to implement and improve teaching and research in network and information security across multiple disciplines in multiple departments. 2. Improve visibility of our network security programs and research activities. 1.2. Goals Increase productivity of NIS teaching and research across multiple disciplines: 1. Involve and attract more students to study network and information security. 2. Increase activities of joint grant proposals and carry out joint research projects. 3. Direct doctoral and master’s students on interdisciplinary thesis research. 4. Recruit undergraduate students to participate in research projects. 5. Increase collaboration with local computer companies. 2. Research Focus Areas CNIS focused its research in the reported period on the following areas: 1. Wireless sensor network deployments and applications 2. Intrusion detection in wireless networks 3. Network processor programming paradigm and compiler optimization 4.
