Harvard Medical School, EHI conducted an evaluation to assess the impact of the Center’s direct education course – Human Health & Global Environmental Change – on its former students by assessing: 1) current beliefs, interest and knowledge about the connections between the environment and human health among the course’s alumni, and 2) the extent to which the course influenced alumni’s career path, professional activities and personal activities. The evaluation was successfully completed in January 2007. Clean Tech: An Agenda for a Healthy Economy. The goal of this project is to identify specific opportunities and benefits for making Massachusetts a leader in clean technologies (energy, materials reuse, advanced materials, safer chemistry, and green buildings) that serve the world, and to recommend a path to get there. The project is defining the clean tech sector in the state, gaining an understanding of the market potential and business needs to support growth and innovation, creating a vision for an economy based on cleaner, safer technologies, and evaluating the potential direct and indirect economic impacts of that economy. The project is looking at the existing resources in the state—including clean tech businesses, researchers, investors, government programs, and NGOs—as well as external drivers, and identify opportunities and tools for growth, including policies, partnerships, investments, research, business support, and education initiatives. Over the past year, the project has created an Advisory Committee of some 25 thought leaders from research, industry, finance, and other sectors; convened five focus discussions; conducted some 30 interviews; researched university resources across the state, and is creating a white paper with preliminary findings that will be published this fall. Sustainable Toys Initiative. The Lowell Center is in the early stages of convening a Sustainable Toys Initiative. We have identified toys as a product area where there is a consumer demand for information and market pressure for businesses to demonstrate environmental and social responsibility throughout the supply chain. The purpose of the Sustainable Toys Initiative is to find solutions to ensure that toys are safe and healthy for children, the earth, and the workers who make them, no matter where these toys are produced and consumed. This Initiative will encourage innovation in toy design and production to improve toy sustainability. These improvements will reduce potential liabilities associated with toy manufacture and use. In addition, this Initiative will provide an arena for sharing information and knowledge, which will increase public confidence in these products. Sustainable Biomaterials Collaborative. The Lowell Center is one of the Steering Committee Members of the Sustainable Biomaterials Collaborative, a network of organizations working together to spur the introduction and use of biomaterials that are sustainable from cradle to cradle. The Collaborative seeks to advance the development and diffusion of sustainable biomaterials by creating sustainability guidelines, engaging markets, and promoting policy initiatives. The Collaborative represents a wide range of stakeholders including green product businesses, social investment firms, recycling professionals, and academics, along with advocates focused on environmental health, Lowell Center for Sustainable Production 322
environmental justice, or rural communities. Indeed, the Collaborative is unique in that it brings together diverse groups and issues across the lifecycle of biomaterials: sustainable agriculture and rural development in the growing of crops; clean production and green chemistry in the manufacture and use of biomaterials; and recycling, composting, and zero waste at the end of product life. Activities over the past year have included the creation of the Sustainable Bioplastic Master Guidelines, Bioplastic Purchasing Specifications for Foodware, and creating and growing the Sustainable Biomaterials Collaborative itself. 8.
