APhA2012 Treasurer’s report Distinguished New Practitioner Award David R. Bright, PharmD, BCACP The Distinguished New Practitioner Award was established in 2010 to recognize an individual new practitioner who has demonstrated distinctive achievements in mentorship, service, and commitment to the profession of pharmacy. Generation Rx Award of Excellence Megan E. Thompson, PharmD The Generation Rx Award of Excellence was established in 2011 to recognize a pharmacist who has demonstrated a commitment to the mission of substance abuse education. Nau, BSPharm, PhD A fellow of APhA is a member of either the APhA–APPM or APhA–APRS, with a minimum of 10 years of professional experience and achievements in professional practice. An APhA fellow also has rendered outstanding service to the profession through activities in APhA and in other organizations. Examples of service to organizations may include having held an elected or appointed office, service on a committee, expert panel, or review board, or other relevant activities. The selection of members as APhA fellows is made by their respective academy. APhA–APPM practitioner awards and honors Daniel B. Smith Practice Excellence Award Steven T. Simenson, BSPharm, FAPhA, FACA The Daniel B. Smith Award, established in 1964 to honor the first president of APhA, recognized outstanding performance and achievements of a community practitioner who had distinguished himself or herself and the profession of pharmacy in the recipient’s community and professional practice setting. The award was merged with the APhA Practice Excellence Award in 1994 to recognize outstanding performance and achievements of a practitioner in any practice setting. APhA–APPM Distinguished Achievement Award in Administrative Practice Dennis Bryan, BSPharm, MBA, FAPhA This award recognizes the achievements of an individual who has made a significant contribution or sustained contributions to the provision of pharmaceutical care within administrative practice. APhA–APPM Distinguished Achievement Award in Clinical/Pharmacotherapeutic Practice Valerie Prince, PharmD, BCPS, FAPhA This award recognizes the achievements of an individual who has made a significant contribution or sustained contributions to the provision of pharmaceutical care within clinical/pharmacotherapeutic practice. APhA–APPM Distinguished Achievement Award in Community and Ambulatory Practice Allen Nichol, PharmD This award recognizes the achievements of an individual who has made a significant contribution or sustained contributions to the provision of pharmaceutical care within community and ambulatory practice. APhA–APPM Distinguished Achievement Award in Hospital and Institutional Practice Stephen F. Eckel, PharmD, MHA, BCPS, FAPhA, FASHP This award recognizes the achievements of an individual who has made a significant contribution or sustained contributions to the provision of pharmaceutical care within hospital and institutional practice. In 2012, this award was supported by the American Heart Association. APhA–APPM William H. Briner Distinguished Achievement Award in Nuclear Pharmacy Practice Vivian S. Loveless, PharmD, BCNP, FAPhA This award, named in memory of Captain William H. Briner, a pioneer in the development of the nuclear pharmacy practice specialty, recognizes the achievements of an individual who has made a significant contribution or sustained contributions to the provision of pharmaceutical care within nuclear pharmacy practice. APhA–APPM Distinguished Achievement Award in Specialized Pharmacy Practice Mike Pavlovich, PharmD This award recognizes the achievements of an individual who has made a significant contribution or sustained contributions to the provision of pharmaceutical care within specialized pharmacy practice. APhA–APRS scientific awards and honors Research Achievement Award in the Pharmaceutical Sciences Carole L. Kimberlin, PhD The Research Achievement Award in the Pharmaceutical Sciences recognizes outstanding meritorious achievement in any of the pharmaceutical sciences. Contributions to be recognized are in the areas of basic pharmaceutical, clinical, and economic, social, and administrative sciences, which develop knowledge and integrate the process of science into the profession of pharmacy. The award rotates each among the three APhA-APRS Sections, and in 2012, the award recognized contributions in the area of economic, social, and administrative sciences. Ebert Prize Jared Baird, PhD; Bernard Van Eerdenbrugh, PhD; and Lynne S. Taylor, PhD, for the presentation “A classification system to assess the crystallization tendency of organic molecules from undercooled melts” The Ebert Prize, administered by APhA–APRS, was established in 1873. It recognizes the author(s) of the best report of original investigation of a medicinal substance published in the APhA Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences in the past year. Both the Editorial Advisory Board of the journal and the APhA–APRS Awards Committee participate in the selection process. Wiederholt Prize Melinda Elise Kozminski, PharmD, BCACP; Rachelle Busby, PharmD, BCPS; Melissa Somma McGivney, PharmD, FCCP; Patricia M. Klatt, PharmD, BCPS; Stephanie R. Hackett, PhD; and Joel H. Merenstein, MD, for the presentation “Pharmacist Integration Into the Medical Home: Qualitative Analysis.” This award was established in 1996 as the APhA Best Published Paper Award for Economic, Social, and Administrative Sciences. In 2002, it was renamed the Wiederholt Prize in honor of Joseph B. Wiederholt, PhD (1949–2001), the first recipient of the award and a professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. The purpose of the award is to recognize the best paper published in the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association (JAPhA), describing original investigation in the areas of economic, social, or administrative sciences. Clinical Research Paper Award Cameron A. Winfrey, PharmD; Sara Wortman, PharmD; Stacey Frede, PharmD; Natalie Kunze, PharmD; Wayne F. Conrad, PharmD; and Pamela C. Heaton, PhD, for the presentation “Pharmacist-initiated peripheral arterial disease screening program in a community pharmacy setting” The award, established in 2006, is intended to promote and encourage high-quality clinical research or practice based research in the clinical sciences by recognizing an original research article in this area that has been published in JAPhA. Postgraduate Best Paper Award APhA–APRS Economic, Social and Administrative Section— Poster: Olufunmilola K. Odukoya and Michelle Chui for the presentation “Human factors analysis of patient safety concerns associated with e-prescribing in pharmacy” APhA–APRS Economic, Social and Administrative Section— Podium: Zainab Shahpurwala, Alicia S. Bouldin, Benjamin F. Banahan, David J. McCaffrey, and Donna West-Strum for the presentation “Pharmacy quality report cards and the consumer: Preferences and attitudes” APhA–APRS Clinical Sciences Postgraduate Best Paper Award —Poster: Crescent Rowell for the presentation “The development and psychometric testing of a hypertension knowledge instrument in a vulnerable population” The award recognizes the author of the best contributed paper (podium or poster session) presented at each APhA Annual Meeting by a postgraduate. Each APhA–APRS Section is eligible to identify a recipient for the Postgraduate Best Paper Award. APhA–APRS ESAS may also award the APhA–APRS ESAS Postgraduate Best Paper Podium Award. In addition, up to two honorable mention recognitions may be presented per section. APhA–ASP awards and honors Linwood F. Tice Friend of APhA Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA–ASP) Award Joseph L. Fink III Formerly known as the “APhA Friend of ASP Award,” this award was established in 1988 to recognize an individual whose long-term services and contributions have benefited APhA–ASP, and thereby student pharmacists in general. The award was renamed in 1994 to honor Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, University of the Sciences in Philadelphia Dean Emeritus and APhA Past President Dr. Linwood F. Tice who, in his capacity as Chair of the APhA Committee on Student Branches in 1952–1955, was instrumental in the formation of the APhA organizational unit that evolved into APhA–ASP. APhA–ASP Outstanding Chapter Advisor Award Gary E. DeLander, PhD The APhA–ASP Outstanding Chapter Advisor Award was established in 1988 to recognize advisors of APhA–ASP Chapters who have promoted with distinction the welfare of student pharmacists through various professional activities. APhA–ASP Outstanding Dean Award Dean Hewitt W. “Ted” Matthews The APhA–ASP Outstanding Dean Award was established to recognize a school or college of pharmacy dean who has made significant contributions to the APhA–ASP Chapter and promoted with distinction the welfare of student pharmacists through various community service, leadership, and professional activities.
