C O L L E G E P R O G R A M S DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACY PRACTICE & ADMINISTRATIVE SCIENCES Vaughn Culbertson, Pharm.D., Chair, Department of Pharmacy Practice & Administrative Sciences During academic year 1999-2000, department faculty undertook a variety of curricular, research, and committee service activities to stay abreast of the challenges impacting pharmacy practice and education. Adding to these challenges are the many therapeutic, biomedical, and technological advancements that affect the delivery of pharmaceutical care services on a daily basis. The positive responses to these formidable tasks have been extremely gratifying, and I would like to briefly comment on some of the faculty’s activities and accomplishments during the year. Curriculum revision was an important effort during the academic year, and I would like to recognize Drs. Erramouspe, Force, Mason, and Professor Gould for their unselfish dedication and significant efforts as part of the Curricular Revision Task Force. Their efforts were instrumental in the development of a contemporary curricular framework that will continue the high standards expected of ISU graduates. Although much work remains, I commend the faculty for their commitment to educational excellence and a state-of-the-art professional curriculum. Additionally, the department has continued to focus attention on reimbursement of cognitive services as a critical professional issue. In this regard, I would like to recognize Dr. Dennis Sawyer for his enormous energy and efforts in pushing this agenda forward, not only within Idaho but on a national level as well. Dr. Sawyer has been a long time Affiliate Faculty member, teaching Clinical Pharmacokinetics as well as providing clerkship instruction. As Dr. Sawyer and other clinical faculty continue to develop and strengthen collaborative practice arrangements with their physician colleagues, I look forward to reporting some exciting achievements in this arena. A continuing emphasis on research and scholarship is evident from the department’s contribution to funded grants and scholarly publications. Departmental faculty contributed as principal investigators to four research projects and five educational or service contracts during the academic year. A similar trend is evident from the list of publications authored during the year, which included 22 published manuscripts and 7 book chapters. Additionally, departmental faculty presented 17 abstracts at national scientific and professional meetings. In the areas of committee service and patient care, it is evident that the faculty were extremely hard-working, far beyond their customary teaching responsibilities. Additionally, departmental faculty members delivered more than 19 presentations to the general public, pharmacists, various health care practitioners, and other researchers during the academic year. Furthermore, faculty members participated in local, state, and national pharmacy organizations. Many faculty were actively involved in daily patient care responsibilities and collaborated closely with other health care practitioners in the community via patient care conferences and committees. Finally, department faculty served on a number of college and university committees. Each member of the department deserves recognition for their individual contributions. Their accomplishments are truly remarkable and bring a strong sense of pride and recognition to the college and university as well. I would like to recognize the nearly 200 affiliate faculty who contribute so importantly to our educational program. Additionally, I would like to recognize a special group of 12
C O L L E G E P R O G R A M S practitioners/educators. This special group includes pharmacists at the University of Nevada Medical Center, Las Vegas, NV; Reno VA Medical Center, Reno, NV; Washoe Regional Medical Center, Reno, NV; the Naval Medical Center, San Diego, CA; and Magic Valley Regional Medical Center, Twin Falls, ID. This group of individuals exemplifies the best in pharmacy education and practice on a daily basis. Moreover, they have contributed significantly and positively to the clinical clerkship program for many years. Finally, recognition is due to departmental secretaries Ms. Sharlene Hetrick and Ms. Chris Marenda. Their extraordinary skill and abilities in managing the myriad of details each day never ceases to amaze me. I thank all of you for your dedication and devotion to the college and our students. Your efforts are essential to our success. I am extremely proud of the department’s record of accomplishments, and am again honored to have served as chair. Perhaps most importantly, however, I believe the future holds great promise and many opportunities. I look forward to reporting even greater accomplishments next year! Vaughn L. Culbertson, Pharm.D. Chair LOTT RECEIVES ISU HONOR FOR PUBLIC SERVICE Dr. Rex Lott was honored with the Idaho State University Distiniguished Public Service Award during Commencement ceremonies May 13. This prestigious award is given each year to one faculty member that provides exceptional service to the community, university and/or discipline with which they are affiliated. Specifically, Dr. Lott was honored for his committment to treating psychiatric disorders, developmental disabilities and epilepsy; correcting public misunderstandings about these conditions; and providing information for both those affected and their health care providers. Lott teaches in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Administrative Sciences in Boise, where his service work helps give ISU a strong visible presence. He has served on the advisory board of the Epilepsy Foundation of Idaho, for which he has helped organize annual education programs throughout Idaho. 13
