S T U D E N T H I G H L I G H T S RHO CHI Aimee Wicker - President Paul Cady, Ph.D. - Faculty Advisor Rho Chi is the national pharmacy honor society which recognizes academic excellence. Rho Chi seeks to promote scholarly fellowship in pharmacy by bringing members together in fraternal and helpful association. Rho Chi, like its sister honor societies, seeks to increase awareness of the ethical and social responsibilities of the profession. Students must rank in the highest 20 percent of their class as determined by the college and have attained a minimum professional grade point average of 3.0 on a "The College of Pharmacy 4.0 scale. During the fall semester, Rho Chi organized and ran a snack table in the student pharmacy lounge intended as a service for all pharmacy students, faculty, and staff. Additionally members participated in the ISU Health Fair. Rho Chi members distributed samples of Advil Ò , Caltrate Ò , and Robitussin Ò . Students gave samples to individuals who came to the booth and answered questions regarding the samples as well as medications the participants were currently taking. Rho Chi held an initiation ceremony in April at the Magnuson Alumni House. Eight new members were inducted into the society. STUDENT SENATE Aimee Wicker - President Chris Owens - Vice President Audrey Jeffers - Secretary/Treasurer Tom Wadsworth - ASISU Senator Paul Cady, Ph.D. - Faculty Advisor Student Senate is the governing body for the college’s student body. It includes the president and vicepresident of each professional class, a representative of both graduate programs, the president of each student organization within the college, and the ASISU pharmacy senator. The Senate facilitates communication between the students, pharmacy organizations, faculty, and the dean. This year the Senate helped to facilitate the development of a new pharmacy logo, which is available at SLT Graphics, Pocatello, for anyone who wishes to put the new logo on any item of clothing. Discussion of a separate graduation ceremony for pharmacy students was initiated by the 1998-1999 Student Senate, and carried forward to the 1999-2000 Senate. Tom Wadsworth, 1999-2000 ASISU Pharmacy Senator, represented the college and was chair of a separate graduation committee established to research the issue. Wadsworth wrote a resolution establishing a separate graduation ceremony for the College of Pharmacy. The resolution was then presented to ASISU and passed unanimously in April 2000. The 2000-2001 Senate will continue discussion of this issue. The Senate, along with the College of Pharmacy student body, provided Christmas presents to two local families in need of holiday assistance. The Senate established mailboxes in the office to help facilitate communication between the different classes. Additionally, many individual members of the Senate were involved in other projects such as Project Immunization, the ISU Health Fair, and various canned food drives. The senate also sponsored the end of the school year picnic at Ross Park. 36
S T U D E N T H I G H L I G H T S GRADUATES RECOGNIZED Thirteen receive achievement awards The College of Pharmacy graduated 73 Doctor of Pharmacy students in the Class of 2000 and honored the following graduates for excellence. Sabrina Allen was awarded the SmithKline Beecham Patient Care Award in recognition of superior professional achievement in clinical pharmacy practice and service, with regard to patient relations. Sabrina was also recognized with the American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists (ASHP) Award in appreciation and recognition of meritorious service and leadership. Deborah Burr received the Pfizer U.S. Pharmaceuticals Outstanding Leader Award, which is presented in recognition of leadership. Lanning Baker and Anthony Dye received the Merck Award, which is presented in recognition of scholastic achievement and development in basic pharmaceutical sciences. Vanessa Duncan Peck received the Mylan Pharmaceuticals Excellence in Pharmacy Award in recognition of high academic achievement and professional motivation. Frank Egbert was awarded the Perrigo Award of Excellence in Nonprescription Medication Studies in recognition of excellence in professional services with regard to nonprescription medications. Chris Johnson was recognized with the Facts and Comparison’s Award of Excellence in Clinical Communication in recognition of high academic achievement and outstanding clinical communication skills. Jeff Johnson was recognized with the Lilly Award in recognition of academic achievement, leadership, and professional development. Ben Nichols received the APhA-ASP Mortar and Pestle Professionalism Award, which is sponsored by McNeil Consumer Healthcare. This award recognizes exceptional professionalism and excellence in patient care in all aspects of a student’s academic pharmacy career. Nichols demonstrated commitment to the profession of pharmacy through involvement in professional organizations and other extracurricular learning opportunities. Amy Scott received the Dean’s award in recognition of superior academic excellence. This award is given to the student with the highest grade point average in the college. Amy Scott was also recognized with the TEVA Pharmaceuticals Outstanding Student Award in recognition of excellence in the study of pharmacy. Nate Smedley was presented the Roche Pharmacy Communications Award in recognition of effective pharmacist/patient communications. Kemi Tunrarebi was awarded the American Pharmaceutical Association (APhA) Academy of Students of Pharmacy (ASP) Senior Recognition Award. This award is presented in recognition of advancing the profession of pharmacy through outstanding service to the APhA-ASP Idaho State University chapter. Paul Wolford received the Idaho State Pharmacy Association Award, which is given to an Idaho resident in recognition of superior scholastic achievement and professional development. Nate Smedley receives the Outstanding Student Achievement Award presented by Dr. Barbara Wells, Dean. 37
