The <strong>Idaho</strong> Drug Information Service, directed<br />

by Jan Beckwith, Pharm.D. and Catherine<br />

Heyneman, Pharm.D., MS, is located on the top<br />

floor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Idaho</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s Oboler Library in<br />

Pocatello. This service provides pharmaceutical care<br />

consults and drug information to physicians,<br />

pharmacists, and laypersons throughout the state<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Idaho</strong>. Additionally, the Drug Information<br />

Service provides instruction and training in<br />

drug information to first- and fourthpr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

year ISU <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Pharmacy</strong><br />

students.<br />

The Drug Information Service<br />

maintains up-to-date electronic<br />

information through the purchase <strong>of</strong><br />

Micromedex Ò and International<br />

Pharmaceutical Abstracts and by utilizing<br />

other medical databases available through<br />

Oboler Library and on the Internet.<br />

Nine fourth-pr<strong>of</strong>essional year Doctor<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Pharmacy</strong> candidates completed clinical<br />

clerkships in drug information in 1999-<br />

2000. Two <strong>of</strong> these students wrote drug<br />

consults which have been published in the<br />

Micromedex Ò system - a database considered<br />

essential in almost all hospital pharmacy settings.<br />

Dr. Heyneman has utilized the resources<br />

available at the <strong>Idaho</strong> Drug Information Service to<br />

publish a review article on infliximab in<br />

Pharmacotherapy, a drug information rounds<br />

article on the use <strong>of</strong> calcitonin for phantom limb<br />

pain in The Annals <strong>of</strong> Pharmacotherapy, two book<br />

chapters in the Pharmacotherapy Casebook, two<br />

WebStudies cases, and several drug consults in<br />

Micromedex Ò .<br />

The <strong>Idaho</strong> Drug Information Service <strong>of</strong>fers a<br />

one-year residency in drug information. This<br />

training program is designed for recent graduates<br />

who want to pursue publication in the biomedical<br />

literature, develop mastery <strong>of</strong> skills, and attain an<br />

expert level <strong>of</strong> competency in drug information.<br />

Residents gain experience in teaching drug<br />

information and case studies to traditional and<br />

nontraditional Pharm.D. students; preparing and<br />

publishing drug consults; reviewing articles, and<br />

WebStudies cases; as well as administration <strong>of</strong> an<br />

academic drug information service.<br />

1999 ISU PHARMACY CLASS SCORES BIG<br />

The <strong>Idaho</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong> Doctor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Pharmacy</strong> class <strong>of</strong> 1999 had a pass rate <strong>of</strong> 100 percent on the<br />

North American Pharmacist Licensure Exam (NAPLEX), the national licensure exam for pharmacists,<br />

announced Dr. Barbara G. Wells, dean <strong>of</strong> the ISU <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Pharmacy</strong>.<br />

Fifty-one ISU Pharm.D. students took the exam last summer. “The ISU <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Pharmacy</strong> has<br />

had a passing rate <strong>of</strong> 98 percent for several years, but our goal has been a 100 percent pass rate,” said<br />

Wells. “I couldn’t be more proud <strong>of</strong> our students and faculty.”<br />
