Editorial Message
Dear Members and Friends,
As many of you are preparing for the summer holidays, we are preparing for the second half of the
year with lots of events including our 15th Annual Business Award Dinner which is expected to be our
biggest ever. We are also preparing a drive to bring more high profile speakers to you.
Beluthai was proud to receive a very special high profile guest: TTRRHH Prince Philippe and Princess
Mathilde of Belgium graced our 20th Anniversary Gala Dinner with their presence. Prince Philippe
made a remarkable and very well appreciated keynote address even practicing his Thai language
knowledge for our audience. Three founding Beluthai members, Dr. Vibul Pattarathammas, Pierre
Metz and Daniel Chaudière, were honoured to receive a special award out of the hands of the Prince.
Finally, Dr. Surin Pitsuwan, former Secretary General of the Association of South East Asian Nations,
had the 600 strong crowd laughing with his remarks on an ASEAN Massage Parlour in Pattaya. Beluthai
was delighted to have such a huge turnout from its membership as well as from the companies of the
Princely mission and their Thai business partners. A big thank thank you to Oliver Verdickt, Daniel
Chaudière, Philippe Salmon and Bernard Collin for their work in making this event a success. Many
thanks also to the Belgian Embassy, FIT and AWEX for the excellent collaboration.
But that’s not all: both NTCC and Beluthai had their Annual General Meeting in April during which
the members approved the financial statements of the Chambers. NTCC and Beluthai 2012 results
were indeed excellent thanks to a largely increased membership and a very successful award dinner.
Beluthai also voted in a brand new Board (see page 5).
In this edition of Commerce Magazine you will find the Thai Trade Notes with an analysis of the key
import and export figures for Thailand. Over the years we have seen a significant shift of Thailand’s
export from developed markets to South East Asia and China (now accounting for 50% of all Thai
exports). You will also read about the Netherlands’ international trade position. As for most years over
the past decade, the Netherlands is the largest export destination for Thai products.
As said before, your Chamber will be happy to provide you with any information on the economic
development of Thailand as well as that of its surrounding countries. Remember, we are only one
phone call away. We’ll do our very best to support you.
But for now, enjoy your magazine
Enjoy.
Office "Go Green" Tips
Article
Buildings and workplaces use a significant amount
of energy and natural resources, so whether your
office is large or small, "going green" can make a big
difference. Taking measures like purchasing more
environmentally friendly products and services,
reducing waste and collectively using fewer resources
can have a large impact on the overall environment.
"Green" efforts can also increase staff satisfaction and
improve your company's image. Take gradual steps,
since change takes time.
Air Quality
Indoor air quality impacts the health and productivity
of a building's occupants; it can contain more
pollutants than outside air, Sources of indoor air
pollution include chemical emissions from furniture,
carpeting and cleaning products. For better air
quality at your office, use nontoxic cleaning products
that won't harm workers or the environment and
select eco-friendly flooring and furniture. Add
plants to help filter the air and replenish oxygen;
philodendrons, ivies and other shade-loving plants
can grow under fluorescent lights and near windows.
Paper Conservation
The average office worker goes through 10,000 sheets
of copy and printer paper a year. Examine your
office patterns for areas where you can go paperless.
Create electronic employee manuals, forms and
similar documents, and establish an email list to send
customers newsletters and catalogs online. Work
with management to determine which documents in
your office can be read or stored electronically. When
you must print, use soy-based ink toner cartridges
and recycled-content paper. Consider double-sided
printing whenever possible to reduce paper use.
Workplace Dining
Cut back on the office waste stream by establishing
an eco-friendly kitchen facility with reusable coffee
mugs, drinking glasses, dishes and silverware; have
recycling bins handy for beverage containers. Bring a
homemade lunch to work, which reduces packaging
and allows you to eat organic. To reduce bottled water
waste, make sure your company provides a good
source of drinking water; give employees a reusable
bottle with the company logo. Opt for organic and
fair trade coffees and teas, and buy organic and local
food for office gatherings and events.
If your office doesn't have a "Green Team," consider
starting one to establish goals and plan projects
that make your office more energy efficient, with
representatives from different departments.
Recommended is that senior management is involved
in these teams and that staff is empowered to address
areas of energy efficiency. Team efforts can range
from getting everyone in the habit of turning off
power strips at the end of the day to gaining Energy
Star certification for the entire building. Keep in mind
that every eco-friendly act --- no matter how small
--- contributes to a workplace culture of conservation.
Dertlef Reis
How can we learn from Christopher Columbus, Pablo Picasso, Aristotle, King Solomon, and John
Rambo to succeed in an innovation project? We have to adopt their mindset to guide our thinking at
the right stage of an idea project. Today, I invite you to study the Five Plus One Mindsets of Innovation that
we use at THINKERGY to guide our clients through our proprietary X-IDEA Process.
1
CREATIVITY Un-Ltd.: The fiveplus-one
mindsets of innovation
1. The Explorer: The first innovation mindset you
need to adopt is that of an explorer. Curiosity, mental
flexibility, ambivalent thinking and courage are the
prime characteristics of an explorer. Not too long ago,
many parts of the world were terra incognita, unknown
territories. It was the job of an explorer to travel into
the unknown terrain, gain new insights about the
territory, and on returning home, share information
so that a new, more accurate map could be drawn.
Similarly, exploration is the start of every idea project.
Begin your explorer’s journey by firstly expressing
your initial understanding of the business challenge
that you are facing. Then express what you know
about the project and - more importantly - what
you do not know yet about the situation (i.e., map
out the familiar terrain and the knowledge frontier).
Thereafter, explore the ambiguity of your unfamiliar
knowledge terrain by using exploration tools to
gain novel insights. Finally, after having acquired
a better understanding of the situation, you are
able to express your final challenge statement.
22. The Artist: As you move into the Ideation stage,
it is time to step into a new mental role: the artist.
An artist in its closest definition is a person who
produces paintings or drawings. Artists indulge their
imagination and creativity and also show courage to
suggest wild ideas. Now please imagine looking at a
masterpiece of your favourite artist right in front of
you. While you recall its beauty, don’t forget that in
order to arrive at this final masterpiece, your beloved
artist first produced many, many sketches and
detailed studies. The vast majority of those sketches
and studies were later discarded. When you ideate,
follow a similar production process and focus first
on creating many, many, many raw ideas. They will
be your vital input material out of which you will
compose truly good ideas.
33. The Alchemist: According to myth, an Alchemist
has the power to transform something common
into something special. Transforming common
raw ideas into special real ideas is exactly what
we aim to achieve in the development stage.
To do this job, we fall back on key principles of
alchemy: discovery and experimentation based on
trial and error. “Discovery consists of seeing what
everybody has seen, and thinking what nobody
18
has thought,” noted the Hungarian Nobel Prizewinning
biochemist Albert von Szent-Gyorgyi.
We first need to discover intriguing raw ideas
and then transform them into real ideas through
experimentation and the help of special Idea
Development Tools. This might take some time
and effort - so recall the advice of the legendary US
inventor Thomas A. Edison: “Genius is one percent
inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration.”
Also note that a great alchemist first and foremost
relies on a highly developed intuition and follows a
radiant, experimental and creative mental process that
differs significantly from the sequential, systematic
and logical thinking of a scientist.
Innovation, how can it be defined?
A convenient definition of innovation from an organizational
perspective is given by Luecke and Katz (2003) who wrote:
“Innovation . . . is generally understood as the successful
introduction of a new thing or method . . . Innovation is
the embodiment, combination, or synthesis of knowledge
in original, relevant, valued new products, processes, or
services. (p. 2)”
Don Sheelen also placed innovation at the pinnacle of
modern business stating that:
“Innovation is the lifeblood of any organization.” Sheelan
emphasizes that “without it, not only is there no growth,
but, inevitably, a slow death.”
volume 2, 2013

5
44. The Judge: A judge at
court thoroughly evaluates
the evidence presented by
the accusing prosecutor and
the defending attorney, and
then makes a verdict on the
case. This mental role serves
us well in the Evaluation
stage, where we have to
evaluate the pros and cons
of a set of relevant good ideas
and then ultimately select the
most meaningful and promising
ideas for real-life implementation.
Critical thinking, impartial judgment
and courage to make the right decision
are the most relevant traits of a good
judge - at court and in an idea project.
5. The Warrior: “The world hates change, yet
it is the only thing that has brought progress,”
noted the famed US inventor Charles F. Kettering.
Having filed more than 200 patents in his life,
he should know. All great minds had to overcome
rejection and to fight against massive resistance after
introducing a breakthrough idea to the world. So
better get ready for our fifth mindset: The warrior.
CONTINUOUS INNOVATION MODEL
Continuous Innovation Model
The Continuous Innovation Model by American Advisory
firm UC, is based on the following philosophy: Innovative
companies understand that individual or special programs
such as continuous improvement, brainstorming sessions
or creativity training do not make the organization
innovative. Rather, the collection or portfolio of these
initiatives, wrapped within a well supported climate of
innovation, results in an organization loaded with skilled
and passionate people who strive to make innovation a part
of their daily mind set.
A warrior can be defined as a brave or experienced
soldier or fighter. That’s exactly what you need
to become to activate your great idea. In the final
Activation stage of the X-IDEA Process, you need
to take massive action and fight to bring your great
idea to life. Aside from courage, also exhibit the
operational flexibility and practical creativity of the
warrior to convincingly sell your idea. Also model
the warrior’s careful but adjustable planning and
preparation process ahead of a battle when you draft
and re-adjust your idea implementation plan.
volume 2, 2013
66. The Magician: If you systematically follow all of
those five mental roles, you will be able to activate
a hidden sixth mindset: The Magician. Magic can
be defined as a quality that makes something seem
removed from everyday life, especially in a way that
delights. The magician is the culmination and result
of all other five mindsets. Integrate all five mindsets of
innovation in the right order, and you will be able to
create magic and “Wow!” your customers.
Thailand’s imports (in US dollar terms)
Thai imports in US Dollar terms grew by 8.4 percent in 2012. The significant increase in imports from Japan (17.6%)
and China (17.5%) can in part be attributed to a sharp increase in the import of machinery to replace or repair
machinery lost or damaged during the flood of 2011. The strong performance of European Union exports to Thailand
is inflated by a major aircraft deal from France and a very high export value of iron and steel from the United
Kingdom, which contributed 1.6 billion and 700 million respectively to the European Union exports to Thailand.
Unit: million US dollars
Thailand’s imports from the European Union (in US dollar terms)
In absolute terms, exports from the European Union member states to Thailand grew by 11.7% in 2012. This growth
is inflated by a major aircraft deal from France and an unusual high export value of iron and steel from the United
Kingdom, which contributed 1.6 billion and 700 million respectively to the European Union exports to Thailand.
Without these two irregular exports, European Union exports to Thailand would have registered a marginal decline .
The Netherlands remains the 5th largest exporter from the European Union to Thailand, after Germany, France, the
United Kingdom and Italy. Exports from the Netherlands to Thailand in 2012 were at a similar level to that in 2011.
The small 1.6 % growth is largely a result of export price increases.
Commerce
The sharp drop in exports from Belgium is a direct result of a sharp decline in exports of precious stones, which is a
major component of Belgium's exports.
Thailand’s exports (in US dollar terms)
Thailand’s strong export performance over the past few years came to an abrupt halt in 2012. Two main factors
contributed to this below target export performance.
Firstly, a large number of factories in two of Thailand’s main exporting industries, namely automotive and electronics
were severely affected by the flood in 2011 and were able to return to normal production levels only from the 3rd
quarter of 2012 onwards.
And secondly, the financial crisis in the Euro zone let to a sharp decline of almost 10 percent in Thai exports to the
European Union and contributed to a slowdown in export to China, through which many Thai products find their
way to the European Union.
Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam are Thailand’s main export destinations in ASEAN. China remains the
largest single export destination for Thai exports.
The importance of the traditional export markets Europe, North America and Japan continues to decline in favor of
the emerging economies with the region itself and China and the other ASEAN member states in particular.
Notable new export markets for Thailand are in the Middle East (Saudi Arabia and the UAE) and South Africa.
Unit: million US dollars
Thailand’s exports to the European Union (in US dollar terms)
Thai export to the European Union declined sharply in 2012, when compared with 2011, and in fact returned to the
2010 level. Thai exports clearly feel the effect of the Euro crisis and declined to all European Union Member States, but
most notably to Denmark, Spain, Italy, the Czech Republic and Poland. Despite a decline of 8.5%, The Netherlands
maintained its position as largest destination for Thai exports to the European Union in 2012, reflecting its strategic
geographical location. Some 50 % of Thai exports to the Netherlands are generated by exports of electronic goods
and electrical appliances. Some 22 % Thai exports to Belgium is generated by export of precious stones and jewelry.
Thai exports of precious stones to Belgium were not affected in 2012, much unlike Thai imports, which did see an
unusual sharp decline in 2012.
Unit: million US dollars
Thailand’s imports from the Netherlands (in Thai Baht terms)
Thailand’s imports from the Netherlands grew by 4% in Thai Baht terms in 2012, a marginal difference with 1.6%
growth in US dollar terms. Strong growth is registered in the import of articles of iron & steel, raw hide and leather,
plastics, and optical equipment, reflecting the strong position of the Netherlands as an international transit hub for
these products.
Commerce
The Netherlands’ international trade position
The Netherlands’ exports (in Euro terms)
The Netherlands’ exports in Euro terms grew by 5.4 % in 2012. Almost 80 % of all Dutch exports are to other European
countries. Although Asia is the second largest destination for Dutch exports, exports to Asia contribute only 8.9 % to
the total. The largest single market in Asia is China (including Hong Kong) followed by ASEAN.
26 volume 2, 2013

Thailand is the 7th largest destination for Dutch exports to Asia, not including the Middle East and Gulf Regions.
However, with a contribution of only just over 0.2 % Thailand is and remains a small market for Dutch exports. It
should be noted that whereas the CBS registered a Euro term growth of 18.4 % in Dutch exports to Thailand, the Bank
of Thailand registered a US Dollar term growth of only 1.6 %. That difference may in part be explained by exchange
rate fluctuations, by the difference in departure and arrival dates and by the difference in calculations based on the
CIF value of the FOB value of the goods. The growth of Dutch exports to the 4 largest ASEAN economies is at 34.4
% remarkable and does reflect the strong economic fundamentals of the second largest emerging economy in the
world. ASEAN should no longer be seen as a region of 10 relative small economies, with Singapore as its financial
center and the other member states as low wage cost economies, but as a strong economic block with a robust
internal growth and providing an excellent stepping stone to the entire Asia Pacific Region.
Summary
• Thai imports grew in 2012, especially with an increased import of Japan and China.
• The Thai import from the EU grew in 2012, thanks to France and UK.
• The Netherlands remains the 5th largest exporter from the EU to Thailand.
• Thailands main export destinations are in the ASEAN: Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam.
• The Netherlands remains the largest destination for Thai exports to the EU in 2012.
• Thailands export to the Netherlands is only 0.6% of Thailands total export.
• Thailand’s imports from the Netherlands are grew with 4% more specific in iron & steel, raw hide and leather,
plastics and optical equipment.
• ASEAN became the 2nd largest emerging economy in terms of international trade and GDP after China.
• About 80 % of all Dutch exports is to the EU, about 9 % is to Asia, and only 0.2 % is to Thailand.
TMF Thailand is growing faster than expected and will
Where does this growth come from? From the many
