Dear Members and Friends,
Editorial Message
We are happy to present the third edition of this year’s Commerce Magazine. Our recent Welcome
Back from the Holidays Cocktail at the Okura Prestige Bangkok was the chambers’ largest and most
elaborate networking event ever. You will fi nd the pictures in the centerfold of this edition.
The chambers have some important changes in their boards. With the arrival of Belgian Ambassador
HE Marc Michielsen, Beluthai has a new Patron. We welcome Mr. Marc Michielsen and express our
gratitude and thanks to his predecessor Mr. Rudi Veestraeten who played a very active role in support
of Beluthai. The NTCC elected a new board in April followed by a wonderful networking event at
the Grand Hyatt Erawan Hotel. We are happy to report that Dr. Pisit Leeahtam has accepted another
term as President of the NTCC. Newly elected members include Alwin Hollander (KLM), K. Att apol
Lohkitt ivanich (Cryotech), Lars Schaumann (Thai Tank Terminal), Jantje Schiphorst (FrieslandCampina
Foremost) and Ernst-Ott o Smit (Greenwood Travel). New advisors are K. Porntida Boonsa (Unilever)
and Peter Ong (Heineken). We had to say goodbye to the following board members who left Thailand
(we hope for only a short period of time): many thanks to Susanne van Laarhoven, Alko Plas and Hein
Swinkels for their outstanding contribution over the past years.
In June, delegations of Dutch and Belgian companies visited Myanmar for additional fact fi nding
missions. The country has seen some dramatic changes over the past months. Just think how much the
situation has changed in just a year. Now is the time for you to assess the opportunities in your industry.
Responsible investment is what our companies can off er to the Burmese people who have suff ered
so much under the military regime and the sanctions. Or, as Luc de Waegh who led our delegation
would put it: providing training, decent salaries and real career opportunities to people in Burma is
your company’s ultimate CSR program. Myanmar has tremendous potential for European business,
but please be prepared for a bumpy ride and do start in a small way (but do start). Opportunities go
hand in hand with risk, especially in a country that has been isolated for such a long time.
In this issue of Commerce, you will fi nd interviews of two excellent chamber members. Bram Jansen
explains how waste from the rice fi elds may be Thailand’s next source of energy, whereas award
winning member Vinythai (Solvay) presents even more sustainable initiatives.
Enjoy !
Isaan Power: Straw as Fuel of the
Future
By Margot Campman
W
hen Bram Jansen fi rst came to Thailand fi ve years ago, his innovative idea of rice farmers producing
energy in addition to growing rice, found solid ground in the fi elds of Isaan. More than 25 years of
experience in the alternative energy sector led to a signifi cant capital injection in his company
Isaan Power. Learn about Bram’s fascinating initiative that will lead to sustainable development on both
environmental as social levels.
A
After working for several industrial companies in
the Netherlands, Bram Jansen came to the conclusion
that waste disposal off ers many opportunities,
but also that many challenges still remain. A long
journey with many ups and downs fi nally led to the
establishment of Biomass Nederland, a company that
generated electricity using wood waste and paper
residue as fuel to reduce CO2 emissions.
GGreat Potential in Asia
Even while working with Biomass Nederland, Bram
Jansen continued to feel the urge for further innovation
and development of alternative energy. To realize his
idea he needed money, and quite a lot of it. It took
him all the way to Dutch Prince Friso, then Managing
Director at Wolfensohn & Company in London. The
prince advised him to go look beyond the borders
of Europe: “That’s where the opportunities are”. In
2008, Mr. Jansen fi nally arrived in Thailand where he
realized that Asia has an enormous potential in terms
of biomass industry with abundant straw available
after the rice harvest. An area with high potential is
the North East of Thailand with 17 million hectares
of farmland, 21 million people and a rice production
of 12 million tons per year. If the straw, which is
currently burned after the harvest, were used to
generate electricity, six power plants could be built
in Isaan reducing the release of 3.4 billion ton CO2 in
the process.
TThe Test Phase
Traditionally, local farmers set fi re to the fi elds after
harvesting the rice. “An absolute waste!” says Bram.
It leads to signifi cant air pollution (CO2 release and
particles) whereas the straw could be used for energy
generation if a collection process could be properly
organized. During the test phase, it soon became
clear that the entire process of plowing, fertilizing
and harvesting would need to be mechanized. From
the beginning, it was observed that production
increased rapidly leading to a signifi cant increase in
the income of the farmers involved. Bram then took
bales of straw back to the Netherlands and Germany
to experiment with (yes, it did lead to some heads
turning at Suvarnabhumi Airport). After an extensive
analysis and testing phase he concluded that, indeed,
rice straw has great energy potential. It resulted in
a new product named NewFuel, which consists of
catt le feed like pellets made from compressed straw
granulates. g
Commerce Interview
CCurrent state of play
At the moment all preparations are made to start
constructing the fi rst of six “rice straw fuelled power
plants” in Isaan, located right next to the highway
between Korat and Khon Kaen. An educational
center will also be built for high school students
to learn about the history, and current and future
developments of rice and energy. The power plant is
surrounded by 12 straw storage shelters. It receives its
straw from three villages organized as an agricultural
cooperative.
IIsaan Power and Sustainability
Bram Jansen elaborates on the diff erent advantages
of his project: “The environment benefi ts from Isaan
Power, because farmers do not have to set fi re to their
fi elds anymore. Instead, the farmers sell the straw
which is transformed into pellets used as fuel for the
power plant. In addition, the project provides jobs
for local people so they do not have to move away to
urban areas away from their families. Hard physical
labor in the rice fi elds will be reduced thanks to
mechanization. Finally, NewFuel replaces the need
to use fossil fuels for the generation of electricity
and it results in substantial reductions of other raw
materials.”
AAdded value to society
Bram relates personally to his project and is proud
that it adds value to society through its sustainability.
However, he says: “I am not somebody who is going
to change the world. I just want to off er practical
tools so people can get ahead. This can only happen
through good communication with the local village
people.” Bram explains that the mentality of the
people he works with in Isaan really touched him.
The success of his project depends on the cooperation
of the rice farmers. Their loyalty and positive att itude
led to a very favorable outcome to the test phase of
Isaan Power.
FFunding and future
Funding of a project like Isaan Power remains
essential for the success of the project. The World
Bank came with an initial capital injection; private
equity funds also contributed to the project; and,
licenses were sold to generate an additional fi nancial
buff er. EGAT (the Electricity Generating Authority of
Thailand) provides subsidies for projects like Isaan
Power that produce fuel from biomass. Finally, Isaan
Power receives fi nancial compensation for burning
these fuels based on the CO2 emission trading
system laid down in the Kyoto Protocol. Bram Jansen
elaborates that with the support of EGAT and money
received via the emission trading scheme, the project
should be profi table in the near future.
In conclusion, Isaan Power creates a revolutionary
chain in the rice industry of North-East Thailand. And
when we speak about the grand opening of the fi rst
power plant, Bram smiles: “The glamour is not really
for me. I care more about the research, development
and realization of this project.”
SSolar Impulse
EEducation
Interview
elgian chemical group Solvay is growing, at home and abroad. Its recent merger with French Rhodia
has created a global leader in high performance specialty polymers, soda ash, hydrogen peroxide and
PVC, amongst others. The group is also geographically stronger with an Asian focus in China and
Thailand. The company makes headlines regularly with its innovative project Solar Impulse. Bruno van der
Wielen, Managing Director of Vinythai, and Khun Sompot Cheeranorawanich, Vice President Corporate Aff airs
and Communication, received Commerce Magazine to talk about Solvay’s growing business, its innovative
sustainability projects, as well as about operating Vinythai - majority owned by Solvay - in Thailand.
A top ten chemical player employing 29,000 people
worldwide, Solvay’s history started in 1863 when
Ernest Solvay founded a company to produce
soda ash using the “Solvay process”. Solvay is
also a powerful Belgian force in Thailand with 2
subsidiaries, Peroxythai (est. 1987) and Vinythai (est.
1989). Vinythai has established itself as a leading
producer of PVC resins and caustic soda for clients
all over Asia. It is also a “green” leader with its
environmental protection policy and its innovative
technologies.
The latest major investment in Thailand, and major
innovation, is Vinythai’s new epichloral hydrin
production plant in Map Ta Phut. The process was
developed by Solvay based on the transformation of
glycerine, which is a recycled renewable by-product
of the biodiesel industry. It is an ultra-lightweight
material and therefore essential for, among others,
the aerospace and wind energy sectors. It also plays
a key role in Solvay’s high-profi le Solar Impulse
project.
It all started a few years ago when Swiss inventor,
balloonist and psychiatrist Bertrand Piccard made
a presentation to the Solvay board in Belgium.
Every year Solvay organizes a competition in which
trophies are awarded to most innovative companies
belonging to the Solvay Group. At this special
occasion Bertrand Piccard shared his experience
touring around the globe in a hot air balloon (he copiloted
the fi rst balloon to circle the world non-stop).
At the end of his presentation Piccard expressed his
wish to tour around the globe in an airplane without
using any fossil fuel. Bruno van der Wielen explains
how Solvay committ ed itself to this high profi le
project by providing fi nancial and other support.
Critical tests are executed now that the prototype, as
light as a car, is up and running. Feasibility was proven
when, on 24 July 2012, the plane landed gracefully in
Payerne, Switz erland, triumphantly completing the
world’s fi rst solar-powered intercontinental fl ight.
Obviously, the plane has to be very light. Mr. Van Der
Wielen elaborates that this is the moment Vinythai
steps in with its production of epichlorohydrin. This
material of the future is one of the current innovation
pillars of Solvay in chemical process and product
development.
In addition to product and process development,
Vinythai intends to contribute to the Thai education
system with projects aimed at interesting young
school kids in science projects. Khun Sompot
Cheeranorawanich, Vice President Corporate Aff airs
and Communication explains: “It is diffi cult to get
good engineers in Thailand. This can really change
for the bett er through good education,” Khun
Sompot also highlights two other interesting projects:
the Coral project and the Telescope project.
volume 3, 2012 15
Commerce
Interview
CCoral Project
This Vinythai project won the 2010 NTCC/Beluthai
award in the category of CSR projects. It is called:
Vinythai Coral Cultivation Collaboration for
His Majesty the King and involves communities
cultivating and planting 80,000 branches of coral
while alerting society to environment preservation
issues. The cultivation project, in which Vinythai
works together with Thai university students, will be
completed by 2013 after a fi ve year eff ort in favor of
corals in Thailand.
TTelescope Project
Another special project by Vinythai designed to
promote and develop science is the Telescope Project.
The key idea was to organize eight Engineering
Camps all over Thailand. Through these camps
Thai children are provided with the opportunity to
learn about engineering principles and outer space
by designing and developing their own telescope.
The children work with PVC pipes and other local
materials. The children can take these telescopes back
to their schools and spread the word in presentations
to their fellow students. The collaboration with Thai
schools and university students builds an educational
platform as well as familiarity with the Solvay group.
FFuture perspectives
With a career at Solvay spanning more than 30 years,
Bruno van der Wielen arrived in Bangkok 18 months
ago to take over the job of General Manager of
Vinythai. He perceives the Asian market as booming.
“Progressively, the economic power changes its
direction to Asia. Here, you create, you have to
act. Thailand is great to invest and people have a
positive att itude.” When the sustainability level and
development of PVC through the years is discussed
Bruno says: “PVC is more and more recycled and
re-used everyday by Vinythai. It is most defi nitely
necessary to use the material.”
About the future challenges of Vinythai, Mr. Van
Der Wielen points at the critical situation of the
off shore gas reserves in the Gulf of Thailand.
Vinythai collaborates with the Thai Business Council
for Sustainable Development (TBCSD) to preserve
these reserves and work with it in a sensible way.
Accordingly, Vinythai is certifi ed by the TBCSD for
their carbon reductions. The creative mindset of a
great Belgian company is proven by the diff erent
dynamic projects Vinythai and the Solvay Group
have set up. Sustainability is today’s future.
The Netherlands’ exports in Euro terms grew signifi cantly in 2011. Total exports grew by almost 9 percent. As
Europe accounts for more than 80 percent of all Dutch exports, the strong overall growth can be att ributed to the
export growth within Europe.
Although Asia is the second destination for Dutch exports, exports to Asia contribute only 8.4 percent of the total.
The largest single market in Asia is China, including Hong Kong. Dutch exports to China registered a remarkable
strong growth of 23 percent in 2011. Thailand is the 7th largest destination for Dutch exports to Asia, not including
the Middle East and Gulf Regions. However, with a contribution of only 0.2 percent Thailand is and remains
a small market for Dutch exports. It should be noted that whereas the CBS registered a Euro term growth of 9.6
percent in Dutch exports to Thailand, the Bank of Thailand registered a US Dollar term growth of twice that
percentage. That diff erence may in part be explained by exchange rate fl uctuations and by higher shipping costs
in 2011 as Thailand tends to use the CIF value in determining import values.
Netherlands’ imports
The Netherlands’ imports in Euro terms in 2011 grew 0.7 percent more than exports. Still the Netherlands
continues to register a healthy positive trade balance with the rest of the world. Total imports grew by 9.5 percent.
As Europe accounts for more than 62 percent of all Dutch exports, the strong overall growth can be att ributed to
Asia is the second largest exporter to the Netherlands. Despite a modest growth in 2011, Asia’s share in Dutch
imports has increased from 15 percent in 1996 to almost 22 percent in 2011. This is mostly a result of the very
strong growth in Chinese exports to the Netherlands over the past 15 years. China is currently the third largest
exporter to the Netherlands, after Germany and Belgium. Thailand is the 5th largest exporter to the Netherlands
from Asia, not including the Middle East and Gulf Region. However, with a contribution of only 0.7 percent
Thailand is and remains a small player in the Dutch market. Remarkable is the large diff erence in absolute value
terms and in growth between the CBS registered Euro term imports and the Bank of Thailand registered US
Dollar term. A probable explanation is that the Bank of Thailand has included exports transshipped though
the Netherlands, which were not offi cially imported in the Netherlands and therefore not registered as import
by the CBS.
SchuF MultiProbe Drain Valve
In recent years, there has been a signifi cant increase in
the use of Process Analytical Technology (PAT). This
technology helps to optimize manufacturing processes and
enables chemical processes to be monitored with PAT tools
such as IR- or Ultrasonic probes, where direct insertion into
a reactor vessel is required. Reactions can then be analyzed
in real time, providing immediate data on critical process
controlparameters. A major challenge in the use of PAT is
fi nding suitable entry points for the measuring technology
into reactors. SchuF has developed an innovative solution
to overcome this problem by
incorporating PAT technology into a
reactor bott om outlet valve. The
PAT probe is fi tt ed through the
valve actuator, stem and disc and
is directly exposed to the medium in
the reactor. Several types of PAT
probe can be accommodated in the
SchuF MultiProbe valve e.g. IR,
Raman, FBRM, and PVM probes.
