From the Principal
Homily preached at Year 12 Mass of Thanksgiving
Wednesday 24 October 2012
Fr Paul Cahill, O.Carm.
Some of you parents here tonight might remember that almost six years ago, at the Introductory Parent
Information Night for your sons back in early 2007, Mr Neal Crossan, our Deputy Principal-Students, talked to you
about the joys, challenges and realities of your son’s transition to secondary school at Whitefriars. He also talked
about the feelings you might experience in the process and how, in retrospect, your son’s time at secondary
school would pass in flash and seem like a blur.
Here we are almost six years down the track with your sons about to graduate from secondary school and we look
back and marvel at how that fresh faced little boy seems to have been transformed so quickly into a hairy faced
big man. But we not only marvel at his physical development, but especially at his intellectual, emotional and
personal development as he comes to take major responsibility for his own life, to have an awareness and
appreciation of the needs of others and an idea of how he might further develop himself so as to make a valuable
contribution to the lives of others and to the world in general.
If you can recall Neal Crossan’s speech back in early 2007, you might also recall that he quoted a poem in which
the raising of a child is compared to the flying of a kite. Just as the kite is carried along, gradually gaining air and
altitude until it is fully airborne, soaring high and free, so children are nurtured and supported and gradually given
more string or rope until they are free to be and fend for themselves and to become whatever they can make of
themselves.
Tonight we’ve been given another image to capture the sense of how we’re nurtured and supported as we
develop in life until we can take responsibility for ourselves and fully make our own contribution to the world.
This is the image of the eagle’s wings. We heard it in the 1 st Reading from the Book of Exodus and we sang of it in
the Psalm that followed. What this image tells us, though, is that, not only are we set free to be whatever we can
be, but that we’re never alone as we make our flight through life. We soar to great heights on the wings of God’s
love and support, but when we hit the turbulent air or the air seems to evaporate, the eagle’s wings continue to
carry and support us.
Tonight we celebrate and give thanks for these kites who are our Year 12 graduands and who are being set free to
soar to whatever heights they can attain in life. We are also celebrating, however, as we gather in faith at this
Eucharist, that God is with them to continue to support and nurture and nourish them as they navigate the
challenges of their journeys.
These young men, our Year 12 2012 graduands, have come a long way. We are proud of how they’ve grown in all
sorts of ways and we see great potential in them and great futures for them. We rejoice in the gift they have been
to this community – supporting each other, supporting younger students, supporting their teachers and making
their own distinctive contributions, both personally and collectively, to the life and development of this
community. Their personalities and gifts have enriched us all. We have all grown because they’ve been part of
our journey and we’ve been part of theirs.
We believe they have the capacity, each in his own way, to make a contribution to life; not just in a functional way
by pursuing a career and doing a particular job, but especially by being a good gentle man who loves others and
serves others and is sensitive and responsive to the needs of others. We believe each of these young men whom
we acknowledge tonight can be like that Christian spoken about in tonight’s 2 nd Reading from the 1 st Letter of St
Peter – someone who is a “cornerstone” in life. This is a person who you can rely on, who is spiritually and morally
strong, on whom others can depend. This is a person you can stake your life on; someone who is faithful and
loyal, just yet compassionate. This is the person you can’t ignore because he is a person of substance and
integrity. This is the person, set free as a kite – or on eagle’s wings – who gives you hope and makes you glad.
This is the person we believe each of our graduands can be and pray will be.
Tonight we say to each of our graduands – thanks for being part of our lives and of our community, we’ve valued
your presence and contribution, we’re glad to see you airborne and flying and we wish you every success and
blessing as you continue to be carried on eagle’s wings throughout the life which now lies in front of you.
We hope that you take fond memories from your time with us here at Whitefriars and that you’ll continue to be
sustained by your friendships with and support of each other. In particular, we hope that you’ll know that love
and peace in your life that comes from being nurtured by God and being, as it were - in the words of tonight’s
Gospel - grafted onto Christ, like the branch is to the vine, drawing life from it.
Gentlemen of the Whitefriars College Year 12 class of 2012, may you know much peace and joy in your lives, but
also bear much fruit in your lives and be a source of strength and nourishment, love and peace to many, many
others.
……………………………..
Many thanks to all staff and students whose generosity, skill and friendly and welcoming manner made last
Sunday’s Open Day such a positive experience for the record number of visitors who attended. Congratulations,
too, to the exhibitors in the excellent VCE Art Exhibition held in conjunction with Open Day – and especially to
those students who took out the Awards. Many thanks, too, to the Visual Arts staff whose dedicated support
enabled the students to produce such great work and to have it exhibited so pleasingly.
From the Captains
As we are drawing ever closer to the halfway mark of our last term of school for 2012, new leaders have been
announced, current ones have left and some are yet learn their new roles. With upcoming exam preparations and
end-of-year assessments, as well as our final school assembly, the end of the year promises to be a busy one for
everyone.
The week started off with the Year 12s running the show on Wednesday, with the annual end of school
celebration day. It was an entertaining way to see the Year 12s let their hair down before their all-important Year
12 exams. On behalf of all the students we wish them the best of luck on their exams and in their future
endeavours. On a further note, I would like to thank not only our school leaders for 2012, Jonathan Deller, Jack
Magner and Dean Mendes on a wonderful year at the helm, but also to the students of the SRC, for a stellar year
with great enthusiasm and initiative shown.
So it’s not long now until we hit the business end of the school year, so I urge you all to keep up the good work.
Haemoglobin Heroes this week...
Think of a dozen eggs in a carton – that’s how many lives were saved this week by our latest Haemoglobin
Heroes:
Luke McKeown
Liam Pinchen
James Santamaria
Dimitri Yannios
Also, my apologies to Tiernan Bushby who donated last week but wasn’t mentioned in In Fide then!
It was the third donation for James, Dimitri and Tiernan, the second for Luke and the first for Liam; all are planning
on donating next year when we start our school donations again in February.
Each donor saves an average of three lives by their donation, either by direct use of the whole blood or from using
targeted fractions. Regular donations are needed as blood only has a short shelf-life, with some of its vital
components only lasting five days. There is never a time when the Blood Bank can say that they have enough
blood on hand both because the need for blood is growing as more uses are found for it, and also because there
is always the risk of a disaster occurring such as a major fire, a rail crossing collision or a road accident involving
several cars or trucks. Multiple units of blood are used in such emergencies, and these need to be available – and
replaced.
Year 10 donors who are sixteen, are needed for our last donating session on Thursday 15 November; please email
Mrs Crossman to be included.
Give blood – it’s the gift that keeps on giving!
The White Mantle
Mr John Abrahams
Assistant Principal (Identity and
Mission)
Two Spiritual Writers of our Time.
This week’s reflection introduces us to two very popular Spiritual writers of the day: Joan Chittister OSB and Richard
Rohr OFM. Joan and Richard are both Religious and have written some very insightful and prayerful reflections.
I would like to share with you two pieces they have written.
The name
“Whitefriars” refers to
the mantle worn over
the habit of the
Carmelite priests and
brothers.
The Carmelites are
known as “White
Friars” because of
their dress – a white
mantle worn over a
brown habit.
The white mantle is
linked with the
Prophet Elijah who
wore a similar garb,
probably of
sheepskin.
The early hermits of
Mount Carmel
adopted this white
mantle as a symbol of
their devotion to
Mary, the mother of
our Lord.
Authentic Prayer Unmasks Us
by Joan Chittister OS
Prayer is not just spending time with God … If it ends there, it is fruitless. No, prayer is dynamic. Authentic prayer
changes us - unmasks us. Teresa of Avila
To wait for God does not mean that there is nothing else for me to do in the spiritual life than pray. Prayer is not a
cocoon. We do not simply go into prayer and hope to come out on the other end of the exercise fully grown in the
Spirit, perfectly new, totally finished. All dross removed. All rust scoured. The soul burnished. The heart
refurbished. The soul bright and radiant. The mind clear and certain.
Not at all. There is too much of us in us to ever disappear. Nor is it meant to. No, the function of prayer is not to
obliviate the self. It is to become to the utmost what we are meant to be no matter what situation we are in.
Prayer is the process that leads us to become what Jesus models for us to be.
To pray does not mean that we will cease to be ourselves. It simply means that we will come to know clearly what
it will take to become more of the Jesus figure we are all meant to be.
We watch Jesus confront the leaders of the day. He calls the priests and Pharisees to cleanse the temple and lift
from the backs of the people the laws of the synagogue that burden them. He calls the leaders of the state to stop
living off the backs of the poor. And he calls us to do the same.
Being immersed in prayer, really immersed in prayer, sears our souls. It forces us to see how far from our own
ideals we stand. It challenges the images of goodness and piety and integrity we project. It confronts us with
what it really means to live a good life. It requires courage of us rather than simply piety.
It is in following Jesus down from the mountaintop, along the roads of the world, through the public parts of the
city, into the ghettoes of the poor and the halls of government and the chanceries of the churches, saying with
John the Baptist, “Repent and sin no more” that prayer gets its hallmark of undisputed credibility.
from The Breath of the Soul by Joan Chittister (Twenty-Third Publications)
“Nobody finds time for prayer. You either take time for it or you don't get it.”
Richard Rohr on Parables
Jesus uses storytelling to change our world view, which is common among all spiritual masters. The evangelists
call them parables. A parable confronts our common and convenient world and subverts it. It doesn’t call for
discussion, debate, or further questions; it is not God-as-information and quick answers. Rather it is God-asinvitation-revolution-and-challenge.
A parable calls us to insight, freedom, and decision. A parable doesn’t lead
us to endless analysis; it’s either a flashing insight or it’s nothing.
Jesus is never afraid to put things in a hard and ego-demanding way. He’s not afraid of using a word that’s
inevitably going to be misunderstood. He puts big truth out there; dealing with it is the listener’s problem.
He is saying, in effect, “Struggle with what I’m saying!”
In general, Jesus doesn’t spend a great deal of time qualifying his points and making sure that everybody
understands him clearly according to the recent political correctness. I am afraid liberal people are just as trapped
in political correctness as are conservatives. Liberals often want you to say what will be inoffensive to any ego, and
their false self is easily offended. (If you do not offend any ego whatsoever, you are supposedly being Christian!)
In fact, Jesus offends the rich, the arrogant, the superior, the righteous, and the supposedly orthodox.
Adapted from The Good News According to Luke: Spiritual Reflections,
by Richard Rohr, pp. 120, 162
Remembering Those Who Have Gone To Their Eternal Rest.
As the month of November approaches, we invite all members of our
community to submit the names of family members (immediate and
extended) who have gone to their eternal rest, so we can remember
and pray for them throughout the month. All names will be entered
into our Memorial Book and placed in the College Chapel and prayed
for throughout the month of November. Please provide details (full
name of person) to John Abrahams on the following email address:
jabarahams@whitefriars.vic.edu.au
The College also has a permanent Memorial for those who have died,
with space for a limited number of plaques that could be attached.
These plaques contain the names of many great supporters of the
College, namely, past students, parents, staff and members of the
Carmelites.
If you would like to discuss the possibility of a plaque in memory of a
loved one, please feel free to contact John Abrahams at the College.
RE Enrichment - Philosophy Online
This year the RE Faculty has been facilitating an online Philosophy course run by the Distance Education Centre of
Victoria. The year-long course is designed to provide extension for students who enjoy an extra challenge and
who would benefit from working with like-minded students to enhance their thinking and ICLT skills. This year
the College had students in Year 7 and 8 who explored age-old questions on the meaning of life, the soul, time
and ethical living. The boys will get together next Wednesday to finalise their work for the year. The boys include:
Thomas Bailey, Ben Mann, Simon Wong, Jack England, Luke Baddock, Matthew Coen, Owen Swift and
Senior School - VCE Exams
Mr Brad Bird
Senior School Co-ordinator
VCE Exams
The end of year exam period is about to get under way for VCE students. The written exam period for Unit 3/4
studies commences with the English and ESL Exams on Thursday 1 November and concludes on Thursday 22
November. Our Year 11 classes finish on Thursday 8 November and their exam period starts on Friday 9
November finishing on the following Thursday 15 November.
All students doing Unit 3/4 studies have been given their timetables along with information about rules and
arrangements for the exams. During the exam period, VCE students only need to attend school for their
scheduled exams. Students need to wear uniform for the Year 11 exams however uniform is not required for the
Unit 3\4 exams.
Two timetables are attached which show the dates and times for:
The Year 11 exams - Click Here
The VCAA Unit 3\4 written exams - Click Here
If your son is sick on the day of the exam please call Mr Brad Bird on the morning of the exam. In the case of Unit
3/4 exams we cannot provide extra time for late students unless there are exceptional circumstances and we
cannot reschedule these for students who are absent. So wherever possible, students should make every effort to
attend. If your son is ill but has still attended his exam, a parent should still call me to explain the situation as you
may be able to apply for a ‘Derived Examination Score’.
For Unit 3/4 exams,
The VCAA does not expect students to attend an examination session against medical advice, but they must have
a definitive statement from their doctor about their diagnosis and inability to attend. If a student does not
attend an examination session and their application for a Derived Examination Score is not approved they
will not receive a score for that examination.
If a student is ill but able to attend the examination, they should inform the Chief Supervisor of their condition as
soon as possible before or during the examination. The Chief Supervisor is responsible for completing the
relevant section of the application form for a Derived Exam Score.
A Big Thank You
To all Year 12 parents, thank you for the support of your boys this year, thank you also for your support at the
Thanksgiving Mass, we at the College hope you all enjoyed the night, it was a fitting end to six fantastic years at
the College. I now hope the boys are in full study mode and will perform at their absolute best in the November
exams.
If you have any questions about the exam arrangements please contact me at the College on 9872 8200.
The inaugural Lyn Power Literary Award 2012
This year has given the English Department the honour of being able to award some students the inaugural
Lyn Power Literary Award. Lyn Power worked at Whitefriars College as a Literature and English teacher for twentysix
years and gave many students the opportunity to engage with other societies, ideas, worlds, times and people
through her love of words and the magic they create. Appreciation for Literature at Whitefriars grew because of
Lyn and, on her retirement last year, an award has been created to reward those students who put great thought,
effort in crafting and imagination into their creative writing. The Year 12 Literature students wrote pieces for the
award this year, and other students will be encouraged to take up the challenge next year. It has been a pleasure
seeing the students work hard and enjoy the whole process of writing. In the end, they were all rewarded with
fantastic pieces of prose.
Please see the links to read the award winner, Tom Walker’s, story (Click Here) as well as the 2 runners up, Jon
Griffiths and Petar Topalovic. (Click Here)
Whitefriars’ Outdoor Learning Program is an experiential program, conducted across Years 8 to 10, which allows
all students to participate in activities and experiences outside the ‘normal’ classroom curriculum. We believe that
‘learning by doing’ is a powerful and effective way of developing both personal and academic skills.
The program’s focus on life skills, preparedness and problem solving helps to develop, in young people, the
ability to make positive decisions and cope with our ever-changing world.
The Year 8 camp is run as a three day program designed to introduce students to their ‘outdoor journey’, which
will conclude in Year 10, and assist in their personal, social and spiritual development.
Do you have a spare stethoscope?
In our recent trip to Timor-Leste, one of the things we found out is that the local clinic in Zumalai is missing much
needed equipment. There are three midwives and one doctor operating out of the clinic. Among them, they
have two stethoscopes. This means that if the midwives go to rural areas to attend to mothers, only one will have
a stethoscope. Also, the clinic only has one blood pressure machine. Among the doctor and three midwives, they
have two watches to time pulses. They are in need of thermometers and other fundamental equipment.
It might be among our Whitefriars community that some of you may have extra medical equipment, which is in
good shape but no longer being used or have updated your equipment, and the older model is no longer
needed. If you can help, please contact Brother Sean on 9872 8363 or by email skeefe@whitefriars.vic.edu.au
This week we are tuning into the Woodwind Ensemble. The
membership of this ensemble is new this year. Lead by Mr Tim
Allardyce, our Oboe and Flute teacher, the Woodwind
Ensemble consists of Declan Boyd, Manning Peart, Gabriel
Sotomayor, Patrick Campbell and Chris Dodds with instruments
Flute, Clarinet, Oboe and Saxophone. Despite being so newlyformed
they not only have the blend of what would be
expected from a more experienced group, as we heard last
Sunday, but they have performed publicly at St. Francis Xavier,
Box Hill’s church re-opening. Their impression has been so
positive that they have been asked by Sr. Mora from St. Francis
Xavier to perform for them again early December.
Congratulations gentlemen. I look forward to hearing even
more challenging pieces in 2013 being performed.
Mrs Jo-Anne Menzies
Environment Group
WEG (Whitefriars Environment Group) farewells our Senior Environment Captain, Tim Kemm this
week. On behalf of Scott Firmin and myself, we would like to take the opportunity to thank Tim for all his efforts
this year and wish him all the best with the up and coming exams and future endeavours. We will celebrate our
WEG year by having a cooking session. Mrs Crossman’s international students planted a hanging garden of
strawberries and we are also testing the new hydroponic mint garden using recycled PET bottles and our newly
bought solar powered pump, bought from micro market fundraising. This has inspired the group to enjoy a
strawberry and mint dessert with meringue and cream followed by our spicy pork and eggplant hot pot curry.
Earlier in the year WEG grew purple eggplants successfully.
Recent items bought from our fundraising include the bird nets over the newly planted vegetable boxes and
plants. Thank you to the pastoral classes who have elected to adopt the boxes and plant a range of herbs,
lettuces, capsicum, tomatoes and beans. WEG and pastoral classes can then look forward to the future taste tests.
All students are welcome to come down every Tuesday lunchtime for a range of activities. Please check the
bulletin for information. Who knows, students might uncover some interesting things, like last week’s find of a
blue tongue lizard in the shed! The WEG students were very excited at the find.
Applications are now open for the two positions of Junior and Senior Environment Captain 2013. Junior Captain
is from Year 7 – 9. Applications include a paragraph explaining why you would like to have this leadership role
followed by a casual interview with staff members. Applications to Ms Menzies by Tuesday 30 October. Any
queries please contact me.
Sport Report
Mr Gavin Kellar
Head of Sport
The highlighted ACC game for this week was our Year 7 Division 2 tennis team in their clash against
Parade College; described by their coach Mr David Bell:
For ACC Results and
Sport Match Reports
“After a tough start to the season in Round 1, the boys took on Parade at home. Whitefriars took the first set but
came out of the doubles down 1 set to 3. In the singles the boys played with desperation and fantastic effort
across the board. Unfortunately, only one player got reward for this effort with Nathan Honey winning 6-4. Our
students will continue to improve as the season goes on with great progress seen already. Special mention to
Ben Worsley and Tom Dillon for winning their doubles match, and also Tom Jackson for fighting out an epic 6 – 7
loss, going down 7 – 9 in a tiebreaker.”
Mr David Bell, Year 7 Tennis Coach
Finally I would like to congratulate the following state representatives for their achievements:
Jackson Drummond (Year 8 E7) has been selected in the Victorian Under 14 Futsal Team.
He will compete at the 2013 FFA National Futsal Championships in Canberra from the 7 - 11January.
Ciaran Hickey (Year 11 B6), Connor Hickey (Year 9 B7) and Christian Petracca (Year 11 B3), represented
Victoria in the Australasian Gaelic Championships in Perth. All three boys and their team performed
extremely well and Victoria ended up winning the National Championship.
Congratulations to all of these boys.
College Services
Mrs Marie Cameron
College Services Coordinator
Dear Whitefriar Family,
The last month has been a very worrying time with Des being so unwell. We were so fortunate to have been surrounded by family and friends and had
wonderful support from Fr Paul and Fr Noel. Our sincere thanks goes to Fr Paul, Fr Noel, our Carmelite family and all our dear friends.
It was lovely to see so many attend the Rosary and the Requiem Mass and the choir lead by Mr Tim Topham were brilliant. Thank you to all the families who
sent along plates of food, the Parents Association and last but not least Nola who is a wonderful and very dear friend who is loved by the whole family. It is
not possible to thank you all individually but you know who you are. You all know how very much we appreciate your friendship and support. Sincere
thanks from all the Cameron family to everyone in the Whitefriar and Carmelite communities. Marie.
Next Tuesday night 30 October, supper is available after the “Hear It” function in the Theatre. If you are available I need three ladies to assist us. Supper will
be at 8.15pm. Please call me on 9872 8307 or 9842 1626 if you are available. Thank you in anticipation.
