Walk Ten at Tatton

The 10k walk at Tatton 

Park is one of a series of 

unique ‘Walk Ten’ events 

being held at 25 spectacular 

venues across the 

country throughout 

August and September. 

Following the walk, there 

was live music, fireworks 

and other entertainment, 

and then at 10pm candles 

were lit and there was a 

minute’s silence to think 

about the nurses and the

on by Marie Curie Nurse 

Meg, who also completed the 

course. 

Community Fundraiser 

Holly Smith said: “Well done 

to everyone who took part, 

including Meg – who walked 

the route but still had breath 

left to tell everyone about the 

work her and her colleagues 

do in Cheshire and North 

Staffs, with a speech that 

marked the start of the nursing 

shift at 10pm. 

“The funds raised will 

make a big difference to people 

with terminal illnesses 

and their families across the 

area. We are hoping the 

event will be even bigger and 

better next year and we are 

already in talks to arrange a 

date for Walk Ten in 2013.”

Natural Burial 

park plan for 

Adlington Hall 

PLANS have been revealed 

to create a natural burial 

park on 27 acres of land on 

the Adlington Hall estate. 

The plan is the brainchild of 

a company called The Simply 

Group, which has been working 

with the estate on the 

project for the last two years. 

It hopes to open the park by 

spring 2014. The site will be 

developed to create a park for 

people who want to be buried 

or have their cremated ashes 

interred in a natural manner 

and setting - with everything 

biodegradable. 

Mark Simpkin, whose company 

will run the park 

following its successful planning 

application, says it will 

meet a real need and will adopt 

“best practice” from similar 

operations across the UK. 

He said: “Thinking about my 

own situation I wanted to create 

an environment where I 

could go and sit in open countryside 

to reflect on happy times 

without being confronted by a 

forest of headstones. 

“Our partnership with 

Adlington Hall Estate has 

given us a wonderful opportunity 

to create this vision for the 

future whilst retaining a large 

chunk of the estate in the open 

parkland of its hey-day.” 

He added: “We have very 

strict guidelines to work to. This

includes removing unsuitable 

soils and remnants of crops and 

pollution and replacing with a 

mixture of locally sourced soil 

and sands to improve the quality 

of the land and create the 

native species wild flower and 

grass meadow. 

Over the next months we will 

be starting our preliminary 

works which will include bringing 

machinery welfare facilities 

to site all which will be fully 

removed once the ground works 

are completed. 

This phase is expected to 

take six to nine months and we 

are committed to carrying out 

these works with the least 

impact to local residents. 

“Once this phase is complete 

we will create a formal 

entrance, low impact car parking 

area and footpath down the 

length of the site. The native 

species planting carried out at 

the same time will provide 

screening along London Road.” 

“We have worked closely with 

several local vicars to ensure 

that we understood what local 

people are looking for. 

“Whilst we fully understand 

that this concept may not be 

everybody’s choice, we have full 

support from the local vicars we 

have been in touch with. They 

are also happy to offer the standard 

Church service as in any 

other funeral.”

The local authority says the

sustainable.” 

The draft document is 

available to view on the 

council's website. It can also 

be seen at the main reception 

at Fred Perry House and 

at libraries and local information 

centres.

gets makeover 

WILMSLOW Leisure Centre’s fitness 

suite has been closed for work 

on a major makeover to take place. 

Centre bosses have created a temporary 

facility with limited equipment in 

the former customer service point. 

When completed, the new facility will 

consist of the latest high-tech equipment 

from Matrix Fitness. 

A spokesman for Cheshire East council 

said: “During the closure, customers 

are reminded that the temporary facility 

may be busy and that members of

membership card should they wish.

Hayley’s leap of 

faith for mum

Newsham is planning to 

jump 15,000ft from an airplane 

to raise vital money 

for a hospital’s cardiac 

critical care unit. 

Hayley will make the tandem 

skydive in memory of 

her mother, who died in January 

after suffering a 

massive heart attack. 

The money she raises will 

go to the Wythenshawe Hospital 

unit, which treated her 

mum in her final days. 

Hayley, who works at kidsunlimited 

Clairmont House 

on Gravel Lane in Wilmslow, 

said: “This hospital unit did 

an amazing job in my mum 

in her final days. 

“She was treated by the 

nurses and doctors for two 

and a half weeks in this 

ward. We were then told that 

there was no hope anymore 

and decided to switch her 

support off and let her go 

peacefully. 

“They were incredible in 

her final moments and 

allowed us to say a proper 

goodbye. I want more than 

anything to give something 

back. So I decided to do a 

charity skydive to raise funds. 

“My mum means the world 

to me and I miss her more 

than anything, she was the 

bravest person I know and I 

will miss her always.”

BOLLINGTON STRIDING OUT 

VISITORS from across the UK will descend 

on Bollington next month to enjoy its 

annual Walking Festival. 

It’s the third year the popular event has 

been held and the 2012 programme 

includes more than 25 guided walks over 

nine days, plus a packed festival fringe 

programme. There will also be children’s 

and special interest routes during the 

half-term break. The festival runs from 

October 20-28. 

Other highlights include a special pub 

walk and a tour of Bollington Brewery 

as well as a walk that is followed by an art 

workshop. The walks are all guided, led 

by local organisations and some are free.

a century, author Alan Garner 

has completed his 

classic fantasy trilogy set

homes for a mum and her five kittens, 

recently rescued by the local 

Animal Support Volunteers group. 

Mum is less than a year old and very 

petite. The kittens are mostly black, but 

a couple have tiny white splodges on 

their feet or chest. They like being gently 

cuddled. 

One of the kittens is very much a 

“mummy’s girl” so it would be nice if she 

could be re-homed together with her mum. 

The kittens will be ready to leave their 

mother by September 13. Any interested

Art lovers ‘have a dabble’ 

MACCLESFIELD Museum’s 

“Have a Dabble,” art group 

members have dusted off 

their paintbrushes, sketch 

books and canvasses and are 

ready to renew their artistic 

journey. 

Group members enjoy developing 

their skills, having fun and 

meeting new friends who share 

an enthusiasm for art. And the 

sessions are about to get underway 

again this month. 

The “Have a Dabble” group 

meets regularly at Macclesfield 

Silk Industry Museum on Park 

Lane, where they are guided and 

encouraged by art teacher Julie 

Longbottom. 

The enthusiasm and experience 

of the group has blossomed 

over the past months. They have 

also made visits to Stockport Hat 

Museum, Biddulph Grange Gardens, 

Manchester Art Gallery and 

West Park Museum in search of 

further inspiration. Carol Sade- 

CHESHIRE’S Archives and Local Studies Service 

held a free event to enable people to see its fascinating 

sports collections – including this 

photo of a Macclesfield athletics meeting held 

around 1910. 

The open evening included an exhibition of 

sport-related photographs and documents, a film 

screening – showing fascinating footage of an allfemale 

mountaineering expedition to climb the 

Himalayan peak Cho Oyu in 1959 – expert advice, 

behind-the-scenes tours, a guest speaker from 

Anfield Bicycle Club and refreshments.

watercolours, gouache,

had great fun and discovered talents 

we didn’t know we had. It’s 

all so wonderfully therapeutic.” 

Teacher Julie said: “You don’t 

need to be an expert in art. Members 

of the group are of different 

ages and backgrounds and simply 

share an enthusiasm for art 

and want to try their hand at different 

techniques in a 

non-threatening and relaxed 

environment. 

“They have all enjoyed developing 

different strengths and 

many pursue these in their own 

time after classes.” 

The group meets on Tuesday 

mornings from 9.30am- 11.30am 

or Tuesday afternoons from 

1pm- 3pm in the education room 

at the Macclesfield Silk Industry 

Museum.

Wilmslow’s 

angels plan 

making the 

town safer 

WILMSLOW is now officially an ArcAngel 

protected community– helping make people 

feel safer during nights out in the town. 

The initiative was officially launched at 

an event in Bank Square earlier this month. 

Licensees who have signed up to the initiative 

– following a period of assessment 

by Sergeant Andy Miller of Wilmslow Police 

and a representative from Trading Standards 

– have passed a number of criteria 

designed to promote responsible drinking 

and public safety. 

Part of a joint approach to tackling alcoholrelated 

crime and underage drinking between 

Cheshire Police, local councils, Cheshire Fire 

and Rescue Service and NHS Trusts, the initiative 

has already been set up in Chester, 

Congleton, Macclesfield and Sandbach. 

All ArcAngel protected towns seek to 

encourage responsible drinking, target prolific 

and persistent offenders of alcohol-related 

violent crime, raise public awareness of the 

issue of drink-related disorder and help people 

feel safer on a night out. 

Wilmslow Police and Cheshire East council 

have been working together closely and 

have announced that 12 premises have 

been assessed and reached the required 

standard to gain their ArcAngel status. 

Sergeant Andy Miller said: “We have 

been impressed with the attitude and commitment 

of all the pubs and clubs in 

Wilmslow that are involved. 

“They have demonstrated that they care 

about the local community and are doing 

their part to ensure that Wilmslow is a safe 

place to enjoy a night out.”

TALENTED Macclesfield singer 

Sophie Spencer wowed the crowds 

and hit the high notes when she 

lifted a very special prize. 

The 22-year-old was crowned the 

voice of Salford at the talent competition 

held in association with radio 

station Key103. 

Sophie, pictured when the results 

were announced, beat four other finalists 

in a very hard fought competition 

that went right to the wire. 

Lauren Thorne from Cheadle, Hannah 

Halsted from Swinton and Arthur 

Cottam and Scott McManus, both from 

Manchester, all put in fantastic performances 

at the live event hosted by 

Key103’s Darren Proctor but Sophie’s 

star quality was just too much on the 

day. Sophie, a student at the Manchester 

School of Acting, said: “I really 

enjoyed it! I entered because I’ve never 

recorded in a studio before. I can’t 

wait!” 

As well as a session in a professional 

recording studio Sophie won £500. 

The event was held at Salford Shopping 

Centre. 

Centre manager Les Rylance said: 

“It was a terrific event and a great day 

out for all the audience. 

“The standard of the performers was 

literally out of this world. I’m sure they 

could all end up with careers in the music 

business but for me Sophie really stood 

out. 

“Great voice, great stage presence 

– the whole package. Who knows, 

maybe we’ve played a part in finding 

the next big thing!” 

Disley show is a shining success 

HUNDREDS of visitors enjoyed the efforts 

of exhibitors at Disley and Lyme Horticultural 

Society’s 105th annual show. 

The poor summer meant a fall in entries 

to the vegetables and cut flowers competition, 

but organisers said the handicraft 

sections showed an increase in competitors, 

particularly in the junior section. The 

show was held at Disley Amalgamated 

Sports Club and the sun shone on the afternoon 

event. 

Prizes were presented in the afternoon 

by the Lord Lieutenant of Cheshire, 

David Briggs.

offering to sell cutlery

The rogue traders claim to 

be from a European country 

and want to sell their goods 

before returning home. 

People have received visitors 

who claim they have been 

to a trade show at the NEC 

Arena in Birmingham and 

want to sell the remainder of 

their products. 

The goods appear well presented 

and are labelled ‘St 

Moritz’. People have been told 

they are Swiss made when, in 

fact, they are made in China. 

The caller also allows people 

to pay by credit card with 

a card reader and asks for the 

amount to be paid in Euros. 

Cheshire East council 

warns people have paid as 

much as £1,500 for goods 

when the true value is considerably 

less. 

A spokesman said: “Reputable 

traders do not trade in 

this way and if you are offered 

such goods, please contact the 

Citizens Advice Consumer

WALKERS LEFT QUAKING 

IN THEIR BOOTS BU BOG 

WILDLIFE enthusiasts found 

themselves literally quaking 

in their boots on an escorted 

walk to one of Cheshire’s 

ancient natural wonders. 

As one of its special 50th 

anniversary events Cheshire 

Wildlife Trust organised a walk 

to the three “hidden” floating 

peat bogs on the 12 acre reserve 

at Abbots’s Moss, at Oakmere. 

And at the vast Shemmy 

Quaking Bog, just a short walk

Millions tune in to view 

Martin’s Everest quest 

MILLIONS of viewers tuned 

in for a special TV documentary 

chronicling a bid by an 

intrepid team of wounded servicemen 

to conquer Everest. 

The ITV1 programme “Harry’s 

Mountain Heroes” followed the 

team, led by Martin Hewitt from 

Wilmslow, in its attempt to reach 

the summit earlier this year. 

The 90-minute documentary 

showed them training with Prince 

Harry in the UK and their Himalayan 

journey, which ended when 

their expedition was forced to cancel 

its attempt because of bad weather. 

Martin and his colleagues, all 

injured serving in Afghanistan 

and Iraq, took on the extreme 

challenge to raise funds for other 

wounded servicemen and women. 

Martin, who entered the record 

books as a member of the first dis-

Youngsters benefit from being Cre8-ive 

THE inspiring work carried out to 

give teenagers on a Macclesfield 

estate a brighter future has been 

highlighted during a special VIP 

visit. 

The town’s MP David Rutley spent an 

afternoon at the Cre8 programme based 

on the Moss Rose Estate, learning about 

the valuable work it carries out. 

Cre8 offers teenagers the chance to 

get involved in a range of activities and 

its summer programme has been in high 

demand. 

Events on offer include music, crafts, 

bike workshops, cookery and training. 

The MP took the time to talk to volunteers 

and youngsters to find out the 

positive impact Cre8 has on them. 

As well as being a fun way to get 

together with friends, Cre8 also helps 

improve life chances for members. 

Mr Rutley was particularly impressed 

by the Cre8 Works social enterprise, 

which offers school leavers half a day’s 

work for an initial eight weeks, followed 

by a guaranteed day a week after this. 

The work is done on a profitable basis 

and consists of practical work in and 

around Macclesfield. Participants also 

attend a college course, and this provides 

an affordable way of staying in 

further education. 

Cre8 also runs an Amenity Horticulture 

apprenticeship course in association 

with Reaseheath College. 

The project started in 2005 by what 

is now Hope in North East Cheshire & 

St Barnabas’ Church. The MP said: “I 

very much enjoyed my visit to Cre8. It 

is great to see so many different opportunities 

on offer and how the project 

positively enriches so many young people’s 

lives.” 

Rob Wardle, director of the social 

enterprise, added: “Cre8 is making good 

progress but we recognise the challenges 

of the current economic and social environment 

for all those young people with 

whom we work. 

“I’m delighted that they have had the 

opportunity to meet their local member 

of Parliament who is taking such an 

interest in them”. 

Three in poll bid to 

become police chief 

THREE candidates have announced 

their intention to stand for election to 

become Cheshire’s first Police and 

Crime Commissioner. 

Voters will be asked to go to the polls 

on Thursday November 15 to make 

their choice for the person who will 

decide police strategy for the county. 

The new Commissioner will also set 

the budget for the force and will have 

the authority to appoint the Chief 

Constable. 

The trio looking to win the appointment 

are Conservative John Dwyer, 

Labour’s John Stockton and Independent 

Sarah Flannery. 

Hall set for TV stardom 

HISTORIC Bramall Hall is to star as the backdrop 

for a major new television drama. 

The programme, which will be shown on 

ITV is called ‘The Making of a Lady’, and is 

based on a novel ‘The Making of a Marchioness’by 

Frances Hodgson Burnett. 

Bramall Hall will be closed to the public 

on certain days this month whilst filming 

takes place. Iain Roberts, Stockport council’s 

Executive Member for Economic 

Development and Regeneration, said: “We 

are delighted that one of the council’s top 

tourist attractions Bramall Hall has been 

chosen to feature as the backdrop for this 

brand new historic drama. 

“We hope that by seeing the hall on the TV 

it will encourage even more people to visit.” 

The hall will be shut on September 6, 7, 9 

and 10 and from September 11-14 for filming. 

Bramall Hall is a magnificent black and

Smiles galore as college 

youngsters pass the test 

IT was a day of smiles for 

Macclesfield College students 

as they picked up 

their A-Level and AS Level

impressive 98% pass rate,

of the Year Jonathan Hallam 

said he was delighted, relieved 

and excited having secured the

for sisters Hannah and 

Beccy Grime. Beccy, 18, 

received B’s in English Language 

and geography and a C 

in biology – to confirm her place 

studying Geography at Chester. 

Hannah also received great 

news – although a year older 

than her sister, she sat her final 

exams at the same time after a 

horse riding accident caused 

her to miss time at college. 

Her efforts were rewarded 

with four Bs, in biology, chemistry, 

geography and maths. 

She has won a bursary of 

£2,000 a year to study geology 

at Exeter.

CHESHIRE East’s sixth formers are 

once again on target to achieve outstanding 

A-level results. 

Projections show that students 

have achieved a provisional pass rate 

of 98 per cent, in line with the national 

average, although marginally down 

on last year’s pass rate of 98.1 per cent. 

Over a quarter of all students 

achieved grades A* to A (25.2 per 

cent) and over half (52 per cent) 

achieved an A* to B grade.

TYTHERINGTON High School’s A- 

Level results saw the number of A* 

grades earned by its students doubling 

to 13%. 

The results also saw an impressive 

81% of pupils achieving A*-C grades with 

all its students achieving passes. The 

percentage of A*-B grades reached well 

over 50%. 

Maintaining Tytherington’s record of 

students gaining places at Oxbridge, Joe 

Spearing has secured a place to read politics, 

philosophy and economics at Balliol 

College, Oxford. 

WILMSLOW’S High achievers 

booked the national trend to record 

their best ever GCSE results this 

year. 

The results revealed that 73% of students 

gained five A*-C, including English 

and maths, and 81% of students achieved 

five or more A* - C grades. 

In contrast to a national decline in 

GCSE English passes, the percentage 

of pupils at Wilmslow achieving A*-C 

in the subject actually rose by 1% to 

77%. And in maths 82% of students 

received A*-C. 

Meanwhile, 72% of Bramhall High’s 

year 11s achieved five or more GCSEs at 

A*-C grades, with an impressive 29% at 

A* or A. 

MACCLESFIELD Academy’s GCSE 

results have revealed that the 

school’s rate of improvement is 

among the best in England. 

When the old Macclesfield High School 

closed last year, 40% of its students 

achieved five or more GCSE passes 

(including maths and English) at grade 

C or above. This year 60% of the Academy’s 

students achieved at the same level. 

The percentage of students achieving five 

GCSE passes at C or above in all subjects 

has also risen.

King’s students are top class 

KING’S School academics were 

jumping for joy and getting into the 

Olympic spirit after opening their 

A-Level results envelopes. 

The A* to C pass rate was 91.8% compared 

to the national average of 76.4%, 

while A*/ A grades was 40.2% against 

the average of 26.5%. 

The outstanding results saw 38 students 

at the Macclesfield school gain 

at least two As and a B, with 19 students 

gaining three As or better. 

A fabulous four students gained a 

clean sweep of four A stars: Sean Wilson, 

18, from Macclesfield, got four A*s in 

maths, further maths, physics and chemistry 

and goes up to Durham to read 

engineering. 

Elizabeth Bell, 18, from Chinley, got 

the top awards in art, chemistry, biology 

and maths and after taking a gap year 

working at King’s, will reapply to Oxford 

or Cambridge to read chemistry. 

David Ormrod Morley, 18, from 

Macclesfield, got A*s in maths, further 

maths, chemistry and biology and 

will read chemistry at Lady Margaret 

Hall, Oxford.

also saw King’s Boys’ Division narrowing 

the excellence gap with the Girls’ 

Division, with the local lads producing 

record hauls of top grades in all subjects.

Girls is celebrating yet another 

year of excellent A-Level 

results with nearly 40% of 

results being awarded at 

either A* or A. 

For the fifth consecutive year, 

the School has achieved a 100% 

pass rate and virtually 90% of all 

grades were awarded at A* to C. 

The girls have achieved highly 

across all of the 23 subjects offered, 

particularly in the traditionally 

male-dominated ones such as 

mathematics, further mathematics, 

physics and chemistry. 

With 100% A* and A grades in 

further mathematics and in economics, 

80% A* and A in ICT and 

physics and over 70% A* and A 

in mathematics, there was plenty 

to celebrate. 

Headmistress Susan Goff said:

as her A-levels. Emily Williams

Meanwhile, in its GCSE results, 

more girls hit the top A* grade this 

year, with well over a quarter of 

all grades awarded at this level. 

The school was particularly 

pleased that many girls who aspire 

to study mathematical and scientific 

courses at university gained 

the top grades in sciences with 

100% of girls achieving A*/A 

grades in biology, 96% being 

awarded A*/A in chemistry and 

89% gaining A*/A in physics. Overall 

a fifth of all girls obtained 

straight A* and A grades. High 

achievers included Ella Williams 

who gained 11 A*s; Jenny Anderson 

and Emily Bancroft who 

gained 10 A*s and 1 A grade each 

and Gemma Davison who gained 

9 A*s and 2 A grades. 

Kumiko Kawato, who recently 

joined the school from Japan,

after MHSG celebrated

The average point score 

for the group of 8 IB girls

to miss everyone here, but

new beginnings and my 

future career as a doctor!” 

Kirsten McAslan from Middleton 

gained an A* in all her 

A-Levels - Biology, Chemistry 

and Mathematics. 

As well as an A* student, 

18-year-old Kirsten is also 

a top athlete. Last year she 

won the 400m England 

Athletics Indoor Open 

Under-20s Championships. 

She said: “I was only 

expecting one A* but to 

achieve three is brilliant 

and totally unexpected. I 

used to have to fit my training 

around my studies and 

vice versa, and trained four 

times a week after school.” 

In September Kirsten will 

study Biochemistry at Bath 

University.

WITHINGTON Girls’ School 

pupils scored an outstanding 

pass rate of 96 per cent 

at A*, A and B grades, in this 

year’s A-Levels. 

The excellent outcome means 

that the vast majority of the 

class of 2012 have secured 

places on very competitive 

courses in the highly selective 

universities of their choice. 

The pass rate at A* and A 

grades was 79 per cent and 31 

girls scored passes at A* and A 

grades in all their subjects. In 

total, no fewer than 63 A* 

grades were achieved - requiring 

a pass mark of over 90 per 

cent in the more difficult A2 

modules. 

Over 21 per cent of all exam 

entries were passed at the A* 

grade – nearly three times the 

national average. Headmistress

Akhlaq is a pass master 

MANCHESTER Grammar School 

student Akhlaq Maan is celebrating 

after achieving outstanding results 

in his A-Levels. 

The 18-year-old from Wilmslow was 

awarded four straight A stars in biology, 

chemistry, physics and maths. He will 

now go onto study medicine at the University 

of Manchester, opting to stay at 

home instead of taking up an alternative 

offer he received at Cambridge. 

Showing a true dedication to the medical 

field Akhlaq, pictured, has spent his 

summer volunteering at St Ann’s Hospice 

and the MRI, getting to know 

patients and learning more about specialist 

areas of medicine. 

He said: “I’d always aimed for straight 

A*s but to actually receive them is a 

great feeling. I’ll study at Manchester 

for five years and look forward to coupling 

this with my volunteer work and 

hopefully forging a great career in the 

medical field.” 

Akhlaq’s efforts are against the backdrop 

of another great year at MGS. 27% 

of all grades were A* - three and a half 

times the national average. 

And 92 students from this year’s A- 

Level sitting achieved straight A and A* 

grades, while 90% of students achieved 

at least the government’s benchmark for 

good A-Level results; ABB.

A golden year for 

Stockport students 

ALL128 Upper Sixth Formers 

at Stockport Grammar 

School had plenty to celebrate 

as they opened their 

eagerly-awaited A-Levels 

results. 

Yet again, the overall pass rate 

was 100%, with57% of results 

awarded an A* or A grade and 

almost a third of students gaining 

at least one A*. 

The strength and depth of 

achievement from this large 

year group was shown by a 

new record of 98% of all grades 

at A*-C. 

It proved to be another starstudded 

year, with 39 pupils 

achieving all A* or Agrades, and 

two pupils gaining a clean sweep 

of four A*s apiece. 

The girls and boys are destined 

for a range of courses at the 

country’s most competitive institutions, 

including Oxford and 

Cambridge universities. 

Headmaster Andrew Chicken 

said: “I am delighted with the 

excellent results which the boys 

and girls have achieved this summer. 

“They have been 

tremendous role models to 

younger pupils in their approach

ITV drama DCI Banks, Sophie 

will be filming BBC series Tracy 

Beaker this Autumn. Sophie 

revealed she “had to study in a 

hotel room in Leeds in-between 

filming scenes and that the 

teachers were incredibly supportive 

and encouraging.”

from Bramhall, is also heading 

to Brazenose College, Oxford, to 

study Economics and Management 

with an ambition to work 

in banking. 

Plenty of hard work and commitment 

has also paid off for the

- 72% of all grades were awarded 

A* - A. Almost one quarter of 

the year group achieved a clean

The figures show that 35% of 

results were A* and a massive 

92% of all grades were awarded

Hulme Hall results joy 

WHILST this year’s GCSE results were 

slightly down on previous years, the pupils 

and staff of Hulme Hall Grammar School 

were delighted with their overall results. 

Over the past five years the school’s 

year-on-year average has been nearly 

90% of pupils achieving A-C grades. 

Head Rachael Allen said: “Pupil groups

The Ryleys 

THE RYLEYS School in Alderley 

Edge is welcoming its new headmaster 

this term following the 

retirement of Pat Barrett. 

Mr Barrett joined the school in 1975 

and had been headmaster for 15 years. 

His successor is Paul Berry, who is looking 

forward to continuing its tradition 

of educational excellence. 

The school was declared "outstanding" 

in all 12 categories following a visit from 

the Independent Schools Inspectorate 

in November last year. 

Mr Berry said: "I feel honoured and 

excited to be taking over as Head of The 

Ryleys from September. Mr and Mrs 

Barrett have done an outstanding job

He arrives at the school from his previous 

post as deputy head of S Anselm’s

A symphony of 

Europe’s sounds 

WILMSLOW Symphony Orchestra’s 

new season of five concerts promises 

a tour of Europe’s great traditions. 

The orchestra makes a welcome return 

to the Evans Leisure Centre in Wilmslow 

for its first concert on October 20 at 7.45pm. 

It heads east for Tchai-kovsky’s Lyrical 

swansong, the Pathétique Sym- phony and 

north for Grieg’s first Peer Gynt suite. From 

central Europe, Alfred Pollard brings an oboe 

concerto by Beethoven’s Czech contemporary 

Krommer. The south is represented by 

Spanish conductor Juan Ortuno. 

On December 1, the orchestra heads west 

when Carlos del Cueto conducts a concert 

of English music, Mark Heron will take the 

audience northwards again on February 

23 for Grieg’s Piano concerto. 

Royal Northern College of Music Gold 

Medal winner Sophie Rosa, pictured, is the 

soloist in Mendelssohn’s Violin concerto on 

April 20.

Exhibition gets a 

feeling for felt 

WORK by roaming artist Lucy Sparrow 

exhibited at Hoxton Gallery in 

London during Damian Hirst’s blockbuster 

retrospective exhibition at the 

Tate is being showcased in Macclesfield. 

Her 4-meter felt shark is a play on his 

world-famous work of the fish preserved 

in formaldehyde. 

Sparrow’s ‘Feltism’ work will be on display 

as part of a new exhibition of 

outstanding international and British 

artists at the Marburae Art Gallery called 

“Pop, Print and Stitch!” 

Also on display will be Manchesterbased 

artist Kevin J Pocock’s work which 

has recently been selected for John Moores 

2012, the haunting photography of Ritty 

Tascum from Malta and luminous prints 

from Swedish born Artists, Lisa Pettersson. 

The exhibition begins with an open 

evening on September 6 from 7pm-9pm 

and will run until October 13. The gallery 

is open Monday-Saturday from 9am- 

4.30pm and admission is free.

Lunchtime music returns 

ALDERLEY Edge Methodist Church has 

revealed details of its ninth season of 

lunchtime concerts, which get underway 

this month. 

The season gets underway on Wednesday 

September 19, with talented students 

from the acclaimed Chethams School of 

Music entertaining visitors. 

The church says part of the proceeds 

from that event will be donated to a project 

being delivered by Christian Aid to 

provide mosquito nets. 

The concert performances start at 1pm 

on the third Wednesday of every month, 

with light lunches available from noon. 

Admission is by programme and is £4. 

New chapter looms for 

literature celebration 

THE 13th Knutsford Literature Festival 

is getting ready to welcome 

visitors and a host of top speakers 

next month. 

And the event is already a hit 

with former Conservative government 

minister Michael Portillo’s 

appearance a sell-out. 

The popular festival runs from 

October 5-21 and other speakers 

include Kate Summerscale, Hannah 

Rothschild, Mark Henderson, 

Diana Souhami and Artemis 

Cooper. Prue Leith is also the guest 

speaker at the festival’s literary 

lunch and organisers say tickets

lament to the story of the Passion 

of Christ – one of the 

NCO’s celebrated Naxos 

recordings. 

The programme then flows 

from the melodic, wistful grace 

of Richard Strauss’s Oboe Concerto, 

played by Nicholas 

Daniel, to the elegiac melancholy 

of Barber’s last 

composition, Canzonetta for 

oboe and strings. 

It finishes with the highlycharged 

intensity of Mozart’s 

most popular symphony - no.40 

in G minor – one of the greatest 

tragic works of the 

Viennese Classical period.

Rutley visited local charity 

David Lewis to give his support 

to important work it is doing to 

provide vocational training for 

people with epilepsy, autism and 

complex learning disabilities. 

Based on Chestergate, the recently 

opened The Work Shop is part 

of David Lewis’s Footsteps programme, 

which offers vocational 

training and supported employment 

to adults with learning difficulties, 

including those living in David 

Lewis accommodation. 

It includes a shop selling a range 

of gifts and handcrafted items on the 

ground floor, while the top floor 

houses Eduprint, which produces 

printed canvasses, leaflets, T-shirts, 

mugs and posters. 

Both shops are staffed by David 

Lewis service users who benefit from 

learning the vocational skills that 

Care for vulnerable 

adults is secured 

CHESHIRE East council has 

intervened to ensure care for 

vulnerable adults is secure after 

the collapse of a private care 

provider. 

Abacus Care (Cheshire) Ltd provided 

home care services to 67 

people in the Macclesfield and 

Wilmslow areas – some of which 

have their care paid for by the 

authority. 

Those who are paid for by the 

council either arrange it themselves 

via a direct payment or have it 

will help them into employment. The 

MP also visited the successful Garden 

Maintenance Team, based on 

Fence Avenue. Here people acquire 

the skills needed to work in garden 

maintenance and can gain NVQs 

in horticulture and woodwork. 

Craft workshops are also provided. 

Mr Rutley, pictured during his 

visit, said: “I am impressed by the 

wide range of work experience and 

employment opportunities provided 

by David Lewis. 

“These roles offer the skills that 

are essential for work and it is clear 

that everyone involved benefits from 

working here. I hope local residents 

will support David Lewis and the 

service users in this important 

work.”

liver parfait 

1600g chicken livers 

(soaked in milk overnight

16 whole eggs (room temp) 

1600g Butters (melted just

600g Shallot 

6 Cloves of garlic 

400ml Port 

400ml Madeira 

200ml Brandy 

Pink Salt 

Thyme sprigs 

1. Reduce port, brandy, 

Madeira with shallots,

2. Strain livers and place in 

a stainless steel bucket. 

3. Blend with a stick 

blender and gradually add

6. Cook at 90 degrees for 90

Brian aims for a big year of 

Rotary fun and fundraising 

NEW Bramhall and Woodford Rotary 

Club President Brian Dougal is looking 

forward to 12 months of fun and 

friendship in his new role – along 

with more charity fundraising. 

He was presented with the official 

insignia of office by retiring President 

Bob Stevenson at a special event. 

In his acceptance speech Brian said 

that he was looking forward to the coming 

year with great hope. He added that 

as well as involving the club in more 

community-based work and raising 

money for charity, he was hoping to 

encourage the social side of the club. 

And he urged more people to come 

along and see what is involved in being 

a member of Rotary. District Governor 

nominee Derek Newman was among the

AN exciting programme of 

summer craft clubs at 

Macclesfield’s Silk Industry 

Museum has been 

hailed a holiday hit. 

The clubs came to a close 

with a veritable “Very Victorian” 

extravaganza and 

youngsters had a chance to 

handle a number of artefacts 

from “Victorian Loan Boxes” 

available to local schools from 

the museum collection. 

Having studied Victorian 

toys and household items, they 

then went on to create their 

own toys and a house from the 

era. Everyone had great fun 

and many said they would be 

returning to the craft clubs 

during October half term. 

On Wednesday and Thursday 

October 24 and 25, the 

“Awesome Autumn” craft 

clubs, will focus on jumping 

spiders, bothersome bats and 

seasonal poems. Julie Longbottom, 

Macclesfield Museum’s 

craft teacher, said: “The 

clubs have been particularly 

popular this year and there 

has been an enthusiastic 

response to our new craft 

clubs for pupils aged 11 and 

above. 

“We will be hoping to continue 

these sessions for older

PHARMACEUTICAL giant AstraZeneca, 

one of Cheshire’s biggest employers, has 

appointed a new chief executive. 

Frenchman Pascal Soriot joins the group 

from competitor Roche where he has been 

chief operating officer of the pharmaceutical 

division since 2010. 

The company employs thousands of people 

in Macclesfield and Alderley Edge. Mr 

Soriot replaces David Brennan who left the 

group earlier this year. 

The new chief executive said of his 

appointment: “Throughout my career I 

have had enormous respect for the people 

of AstraZeneca and what they have 

achieved. 

No-one is blind to the challenges that 

confront the pharmaceutical sector and this 

company, but the underlying strengths of 

AstraZeneca in delivering on its strategy

from Macclesfield’s All 

Hallows Catholic College took

The Year 10 Business students 

came under the scrutiny of a 

panel of top local business experts 

in the Dragons’ Deny style exercise 

at the Romero Centre. 

They presented their pitches 

based on developing a new fruit 

drink to Andrew Donaldson, partner 

with BiG Storage, Tony 

Emerson Jones, Managing Director 

of Orbit Developments and 

Clare Hayward, Investor Director 

of Cirrus. 

Andrew Donaldson said “BiG 

Dragons, clever students, great 

sales pitches, excellent facilities 

made for a fantastic morning for

Clare added: “We were very

demonstrated by all the teams

Back to School 

– holidays…

SEPTEMBER heralds the end of the 

long summer break and the return to 

school; a welcome relief for many parents, 

and a great opportunity for 

those without children to take their 

own holiday. 

With plenty of sunshine throughout 

Europe, September is a great time to take 

a break, with the added bonus of shorter 

attraction queues and quieter airports. 

At the same time as being the start of the 

new school year, September is also the start 

of the school holiday booking period and is 

the time when families need to think about 

their autumn or spring break, Christmas 

plans or skiing holidays. All the school holiday 

dates sell out quickly and occasionally 

they coincide with European school holidays 

which brings added pressure on hotels and 

resorts for availability. 

OCTOBER HALF TERM 

Always a tricky week; for many European 

destinations, although the weather could still 

be warm, there can be that end of the season 

feeling with shops and restaurants begin- 

ning to close. The Caribbean is in the grip 

of hurricane season, which can also affect 

Florida and the East coast of America, and 

it is the rainy season is many long haul destinations, 

for example last year Bangkok and 

Northern Thailand suffered their worst flooding 

for many years. 

The Canary Islands come into their own 

at this time, with great weather and warm 

seas, so ideal for a quick break before our 

winter sets in. Each island is different, but 

we can recommend hotels and resorts to suit 

most interests. Madeira although further 

north, still offers good temperatures and is 

working at attracting families with great 

hotel deals and some interesting activities 

to enjoy. 

The Middle East is another great destination, 

here the temperatures are cooling down 

to a more acceptable level, so again, another 

great location for sunshine, sport and 

shopping. 

CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR 

Christmas and new year are always in 

demand and although child free travellers 

Caribbean 

generally avoid school holidays, they can’t 

move Christmas so it’s a popular time for 

everyone and early booking is required. 

Large holiday houses in the UK and villas 

abroad go very quickly as the extended family 

tries to get together for this special time. 

Santa trips are fantastic in building the 

excitement for children but dates, particularly 

from Manchester are limited, so if that 

letter to Santa needs to be delivered personally, 

now is the time to book! Some hotels, 

particularly in the Caribbean, are so popular 

they can specify the arrival date and 

length of stay for guests over Christmas and 

New Year, although other destinations are 

more flexible. 

FEBRUARY HALF TERM 

February half term is when most families 

plan their skiing break, but to have 

the best flight times, resorts and hotels, 

early booking is a must, especially if extras 

such as interconnecting rooms, ski lessons 

etc are required. 

EASTER AND SUMMER 2013 

There is no doubt that early booking is essential 

to ensure the availability of the lowest 

fares when travelling abroad and organised 

parents find out the holiday dates and start 

putting in some serious research! 

Destinations such as Walt Disney World 

are at their best at Easter (summer in Florida 

can be very humid and tiring for young 

children) and with direct flights from Manchester, 

this is one family ‘must do’ experience 

that needs almost military precision and 

planning, and we can help.

behind local groups

Peaks & Plains Housing 

Trust is keen to continue 

its support for local groups 

and charities as part of its 

commitment to create 

vibrant communities. 

The trust has already 

worked with a number of 

organisations such as East 

Cheshire Hospice, Deafness 

Support Network and NCT, 

who have made use of the 

organisation’s sponsored 

community stall at the 

monthly Treacle Market in 

Macclesfield. 

However, its partnership 

with the market is just one 

way that it provides support 

for local causes and charitable 

organisations. It can also offer 

direct funding as part of its 

dedicated investment grant. 

In order to be eligible for 

funding, community groups or 

social enterprises must demonstrate 

how their services, 

resources or equipment make 

a positive contribution to sustaining 

the local community. 

Peaks & Plains awards 

grant funding throughout the 

year, with one off payments 

from £100 to £2,000. Applications 

are reviewed on the basis 

of the strength of the case put 

forward and the associated 

benefit to the community in 

which the group or enterprise 

is operating.

HULME Hall Grammar School Stage 

Band’s first appearance at the annual 

Alderley Edge Festival was a roaring 

success. 

Playing four of its top tunes - Star 

Wars, The Good, The Bad and the Ugly, 

The James Bond Theme and Mission 

Impossible – the band’s performance 

was absolutely terrific. 

The adjudicator, Liz Childs, was hugely 

enthusiastic about the sound and 

energy of the band, pictured, as well as 

the choice of pieces, with special praise 

going to the piccolo (Lewis Gowen) guitars 

(Jack Thompson and Robert 

Hickey), and percussion (Lloyd Conway 

and Rory Gradon). 

The mark awarded was 87, which is

Taking a hike for 

your local hospice 

PEOPLE across Cheshire are being 

urged to take a hike and stride out to 

raise vital cash for their local hospice. 

On Saturday October 13, East 

Cheshire and Blythe House hospices are 

challenging people to ‘Hike the Hill’ in 

celebration of World Hospice and Palliative 

Care Day, with their annual trek 

across Cheshire’s countryside. 

Supported by Orbit Developments, 

this year’s event promises to prove as 

breathtakingly beautiful and physically 

demanding as ever. 

A new 12-mile route will take in stunning 

scenery such as Shining Tor 

(Cheshire’s highest point), Lamaload 

Reservoir and White Nancy. 

Kirsty Daniels, Events Manager at 

East Cheshire Hospice, said: “This is a 

fantastic opportunity for experienced 

walkers to take-on a real challenge 

whilst raising vital funds for their local 

hospice. So get those hiking boots at the 

ready and sign-up today to show your 

support!” 

Walkers can expect a moderately 

paced hike which organisers estimate 

will take around six hours to complete, 

as participants travel through 12 miles 

of East Cheshire’s 

most stunning

BLIND and visually impaired 

people across 

Cheshire will benefit from 

nearly £300,000 of Big Lottery 

funding 

Action for Blind People has 

teamed up with three local 

societies to successfully bid for 

the cash, which will be invested 

in life-changing services. 

The IRIS Vision Resource 

Centre, Macclesfield Eye Society 

and Vision Support will 

work in partnership with 

Action for Blind People to promote 

greater independence and 

inclusion for the county’s blind 

and partially sighted residents. 

The Big Lottery Fund was 

impressed with the partnership’s 

plans, awarding 

£299,616 over three-years. 

This includes funding of two 

full-time independent living 

co-ordinators, employed by 

Action for Blind People, to provide 

advice and help with a 

diverse range of issues, including 

welfare rights, travel, 

leisure, and housing. 

Funding will also support 

the development of volunteerled 

services, including 

home-visits and telephone contact 

to provide companionship 

and overcome the isolation 

that many blind and partially 

sighted people experience.

Operations at Action for Blind 

People, said: “Isolation, uncertainly 

and loss of confidence 

impact on many people with 

sight loss. Thanks to the Big 

Lottery Fund, and the partnership

the newly created Cheshire East Health

inequalities in health.

A local family have shown their 

appreciation for the care their late 

mother and mother in law, Joyce 

Warrington from Bollington 

received at Macclesfield District 

General Hospital, with a kind 

donation to the Stroke Ward. 

The Warrington family, (two 

daughters – Clare Ledgar and Sarah 

Gratton and their husbands Paul 

Ledgar and Richard Gratton) presented 

a cheque of £3,121 to the 

Ward Manager and his staff on 18 

August 2012 to thank the staff for 

their mother and mother in law’s 

care in the last weeks of her life. 

The money was raised following 

the launch of a local 

fundraising appeal in Bollington 

by sons in law, Paul Ledgar and 

Richard Gratton. 

The appeal included the successful 

completion of the London 

2012 Marathon by Richard Gratton 

and a number of fundraising 

nights organised by Paul Ledgar 

at The Dog and Partridge public 

house in Bollington. Local businesses 

also made donations to the 

appeal.

in law received at the Stroke Ward

Chris powers ahead 

BRAMHALL youngster Chris 

Corcoran is powering ahead in 

his chosen sport with a national 

call-up. 

The 12-year-old powerboat racer 

was selected to represent Wales in the 

National Finals of the Honda RYA 

Youth Rib Championships in 

Southampton, after winning the 

Welsh final. 

Stockport Grammar schoolboy, 

Chris Corcoran, who has been a member 

at The Offshore Sea School in 

Pwllheli, North Wales, for four years, 

made the most of home advantage to 

win the 8-12 age group by less than a 

second. 

Chris, pictured, said: “I am very 

happy, I did not expect to win.” He 

qualified by winning the local heats 

in Pwllheli. 

Having posted the fastest ever qualifying 

time in the club’s heats, Chris 

battled with rough sea conditions on 

the day to win through to the National 

Finals. 

The course consists of a slalom, 

“man overboard” maneuver and 

reversing all against the clock. 

The Honda RYA Youth Rib Championship, 

sponsored by Honda and 

Ribcraft, is a National Championship 

in which 8-16 year old RIB (Rigid 

Inflatable Boat) drivers can demonstrate 

their boat handling skills in a 

race against the clock in the hope of 

winning a 4.8m Ribcraft or Honwave 

T40 for their club.

Disabled athletes get 

pre-Paralympics boost 

CHESHIRE East’s special needs 

and disabled athletes received a 

timely boost on the eve of the London 

Paralympics. 

The nationally-recognised Cheshire 

Academy of Integrated Sports and Arts 

is to get a brand new home, with 

improved facilities. 

The charitable academy, which has 

built up a centre of excellence for athletes 

over the last 20 years, will now 

move from Crewe’s Macon Way to the 

former Broad Street School premises 

within the next six months. 

Cheshire East council leader Michael 

Jones told the organisation: “You have 

been waiting far too long for a new 

home and this is unacceptable and I’m 

only too glad that we have been able to 

help. 

“I intend to bring more facilities to 

Crewe for these athletes so that they 

can go on to reach their potential and 

make us proud here in Cheshire East.” 

Co-founders Iain Chalmers, 52, and 

partner Jane Whetnall, 56, from Wistaston, 

run the charity. 

Ian said: “This is fantastic 

news.These improved facilities will 

mean that we can now raise our game 

even more and put Cheshire East firmly 

on the map for sports.”

is currently the country’s top wheelchair

amongst the medals in archery. 

Hannah’s all set for a great Games 

PARALYMPIAN star Hannah Cockcroft 

told pupils at Hillcrest Preparatory and 

Grammar School that she wasn't just 

excited about the forthcoming games, 

she was also “scared stiff.” 

“The nearer its get, the more frightened 

I become. It's our home games and I feel 

the eyes of the world will be on me. Don't 

get me wrong. It's going to be fantastic, 

but at this stage I just feel scared stiff.” 

Hannah, 19, from Halifax, is the world 

record holder in the T34 wheelchair 

events over 100m and 200 metres and 

remarkably broke seven world records 

in eight days in 2010. 

She was visiting the Cale Green school 

as a BT Ambassador, part of the prize 

Hillcrest won for submitting the winning 

photograph in BT's national 'I'll be 

There Campaign' designed to promote 

the Olympic Spirit. 

Hannah held a question and 

answer session with both Hillcrest's 

Preparatory and Grammar pupils 

before supervising some special 

training sessions. 

Hannah, who went to the Holy Trinity 

Comprehensive School in her home 

town, added: “Young athletes have got 

to find a sport they adore. I remember 

when I discovered wheel chair racing at 

the age of 13, it was wonderful for me 

and I have never looked back. I love 

every second of my sport. That's what 

you need. You have to adore the work 

you have to do every day as well as the 

rewards. You have got to be able to dedicate 

your whole life to your sport, so 

quite simply you must love your sport.” 

Simon Crane, Director of Sport at Hillcrest 

Preparatory and Grammar School 

said: “Hannah is one of this country's 

greatest young athletes and I can think 

of no better role model for our pupils. 

She laid it on the line: if you want to win 

you need 'True Grit'” 

Mr Crane added: “Because Hannah is 

only 19 years-old and only just out of 

school, her inside track was all the more 

fascinating for our own young men and 

women.” 

On your bike: The Bollington BikeFest will take cyclists 

through some fantastic local countryside 

THE countdown is on for miles is a chance for riders to

Bollington BikeFest with

Cheshire this month. 

Wiggins and fellow Team GB 

cyclist and world champion 

Mark Cavendish are taking part 

in this year’s Tour of Britain. 

And they will pass through 

Cheshire East on Monday, 

September 10, during the second 

stage of the race, which 

starts in Nottingham and 

ends in Knowsley, Merseyside. 

The group of 100 cyclists 

will descend into Cheshire 

East from the Peak District, 

passing through Gawsworth, 

Siddington, Marthall and 

Ollerton before a sprint stage 

in Chelford – the village 

where legendary British track 

cyclist Reg Harris is buried. 

The race will then pass through 

Knutsford and High Legh before 

moving onto Warrington. The 

cyclists are expected to make 

it to Cheshire East by noon. 

Thousands are expected to line 

the streets to support the 

cyclists who have become 

household names over a summer 

of remarkable sporting 

achievement. 

The Tour of Britain is a 

week-long event that starts

started with a 400m swim 

in the indoor pool, followed 

by a 24.9 km cycle ride from 

the Cheshire Plains out into 

the edge of the Peak District 

and a two lap 7.34 km run 

along lanes in the Broken 

Cross area. 

The men’s race was won by 

Witz Barnes of Manchester 

Tri Club in 01:11:44, continuing 

his unbeaten run and only 

narrowly missing out on the 

course record.

Jamie Donaldson has 

revealed he is contemplating 

turning his 

attention from the European 

tour to the US 

circuit next year. 

He is considering the 

switch after his first top-10 

finish in a Major at the US 

PGA Championship, part of 

a sparkling summer of golf 

for the 36 year old. 

It saw him clinch his first 

European tour victory in the 

Irish Open. His run at the 

US PGA also propelled him 

to a career-high 57th in the 

world rankings. 

Donaldson said he would 

“love” to play full-time on the 

US tour and said he would 

probably go to the tour school 

at the end of the year. 

He said: “We'll see how we 

go, see what happens before 

then. There are lots of different 

things that might happen 

to make me go or make me 

not go, so we'll wait and see. 

But that's the plan.”

CHESHIRE schoolgirl Sarah Jackson 

is riding on the crest of a wave 

after her appearance in the Windsurfing 

World Championships. 

The 14-year-old Cheadle Hulme 

School pupil from Over Peaver was 

selected for the British Under-17 team 

at the big event held in Medemblik, 

Holland. 

Sarah, who took up the sport at the 

age of nine, was one of the youngest 

competitors and was given the added 

honour of carrying the Team GB flag 

during the opening ceremony. 

She finished her first international 

event in a respectable 48th position. 

More than 400 competitors took part 

in the championships.

A MACCLESFIELD team of 

cheerleaders has returned 

from the European Cheerleading 

Championship with 

a raft of awards. 

Maximum Cheer, made up 

of 150 four to 18 year olds, 

represented the UK in the 

competition in Italy. Squads 

from Maximum Cheer won 

honours in a variety of competitions 

including a second 

and third place. 

The team was sponsored by 

local firm Equilibrium Asset 

Management, which supplied 

the squad’s travelling kit for 

the championships.

coach of Maximum Cheer, 

said: “Competing in the UK

Head coach Geoff Wappett 

says he has been forced to 

throw in the youngsters sooner 

than he would have liked 

because of injuries. 

He told the club’s official 

website: “We really need more 

time to fully integrate the new 

lads into the set-up here, but 

our hand has been forced to a 

certain extent.” 

He added: “It’s also a particular 

disappointment that 

the likes of Ryan Parkinson 

and Frankie Barker, who 

would’ve been certain starters 

in the back row, won’t be 

available for a while. 

“Ryan will be out for six 

weeks after having his broken 

hand pinned back together, 

and Frankie will be out for a 

while after the knee injury he

Cheshire this month. 

Wiggins and fellow Team GB cyclist and 

world champion Mark Cavendish are taking 

part in this year’s Tour of Britain, 

which passes through Cheshire East on 

September 10. 

The countdown is also on for this 

month’s first-ever Bollington BikeFest, 

with riders from across the country set to 

take part. 

The big event on September 16 has 

three rides to suit all abilities, from 20kms 

to the 70 mile Grimshaw Grueller, with 

30 miles of classified climbs.
