Elderly Hale residents
saved from eviction
THE Wellgreen Lodge in Hale –
home to many residents in their 80s
and 90s – has escaped the threat of
possible closure that has been
hanging over the scheme for the
last few months.
A packed meeting of residents and
concerned members of the local community
was informed by Rodger Cairns, a
spokesman for the Trafford Housing
Trust, that the decision had been taken
to keep the scheme open.
This follows intense pressure from the
Wellgreen defence committee which had
recruited the support of the local MP,
councillors and the Hale, Altrincham
and Sale Independent.
Rodger Cairns announced that the
Trust had listened to the concerns
expressed by the local community, consulted
the Wellgreen residents, and had
taken into account the important role

the Lodge played in providing social
activities locally, before making its decision.
The Trust had also addressed the key
issue of financial viability and found
that with certain provisos, Wellgreen
could reverse the predicted loss.
Whereas this is likely to involve an
increase in rent and service charges
from next April , this is unlikely to have
much impact on the residents as most of
them receiving Housing Benefit.
The decision was received with obvious
enthusiasm by the elderly residents,
many of whom have lived there for years
– and wish to see out the rest of their
lives there.
“We can only say we are all delighted,”
says Geoff Swindells, spokesman for the
Wellgreen defence committee.

FORMER servicemen and women
are being invited to register for
veterans’ badges, these will be presented
to local Veteran’s at a special
event organised by Trafford
Council.
This year the event is incorporating
Armed Forces Day and the Great
Poppy Weekend, celebrating the 90th
anniversary of the Royal British
Legion. The presentation of the Veteran’s
badges is now in its third year
with sixty veterans having received
their badges over the past two years.
It will be held at Sale Waterside’s
Robert Bolt Theatre on 23 June at
2pm, the week before Armed Forces
Day which is on 25 June. Mayor of
Trafford, Cllr Mrs Jane Baugh, will
present the lapel badges to all Trafford
Veteran’s registering to attend the ceremony.
Anyone who has served in the
UK armed forces is entitled to claim
and wear the veterans’ badge.
Former merchant marine workers
may also apply for them if they were
involved in a war zone. Trafford Council
has a limited number to distribute
during the ceremony so the requests
for badges will be processed on a first
come first served basis. If you think

for schools.
Pupils were invited, by
the Fairtrade in Trafford
steering group, to submit
a poem, short story,
picture or drawings on

Britain’s Got Talent body-popping
sensation lives in Brooklands
and works in Altrincham

BODY-POPPING breakdancer
Razy Gogonea became an
overnight sensation when he
appeared on the chart topping
Britain’s Got Talent TV Show.
Yet what most people watching
from Trafford didn’t realise is that
the future star lives in Brooklands
with his girlfriend Ruth Lee and her
family – and can even be found helping
out in her sister Octavia’s Baby
Play Café in Altrincham’s King’s
Court.
The 28-year-old was born in Roumania
but came to the UK in 2008
after meeting Ruth in Cyprus –
where he was performing in venues
round the island – and a holiday
romance led to her inviting him to
return home with her.
It was Ruth’s family who persuaded
him to enter “Britain’s Got Talent”
after he’d landed a contract to appear
at Pontins.
The end result was seen by millions
as he ran onto the stage on his knees
dressed as the Keanu Reeves character
from the cult sci-fi movie Martrix.
Watched by Ruth , Razy amazed
the judges with his unique performance,
which saw him bend and
move his body like nobody else to
wow the celebrity judges.
Afterwards, judge Michael McIntyre
said: “I loved you Razy, there
were things I never seen humans do.
I thought it was excellent, I really
enjoyed watching it. You are Neo from
The Matrix.”
Amanda Holden said: ‘I found it
exciting, you used the whole stage
which is very good. Beautifully
choreographed, excellent job. Well
done!’
Even David Hasselhoff added:
‘You’re like a real life videogame,
very very entertaining. Well done.’
A tearful Razy struggled to contain
himself as all three judges voted to
send him through to the next round.
Razy developed his unique dance
style as a child spending hours each
day in front of a mirror. And he is
still practising three hours each
evening at the home he shares in
Brooklands with Ruth and her parents
Kenneth and Elizabeth Lee.
“He rehearses each evening in the
kitchen,” says 27-year-old Ruth who
is a Housing Assistant with a local
Housing Trust.
But how has Razy been affected by
his new found fame?
“There is really no change in him
at all,” says Sarah. “Naturally, he’s
very excited but that’s as far as it
goes.”
Adding to Razy’s excitement is
that his success has sparked coverage
on Romanian TV which has
been seen by his retired father and
brother but not by his mother who
has been forced to work in Italy to
help support the family.
Both Razy and Ruth have little
else on their minds at the moment
apart from Britain’s Got Talent and
the glittering future that potentially
awaits– apart from one thing.
“We are planning to get married
next year,” says Ruth.

Seven year old
Timperley boy is Cheshire’s
finest orator . . .

Cheshire’s finest young orator
Raman Gnanalingham, who is more
than accustomed to public speaking.
Trained by Speech and Drama specialist
Nuala Thompson at the Altrincham
Preparatory School, Raman, 7,
from Timperley won the Morton Trophy
at the CheshireSpeech and
Drama Festival for his word perfect
rendition of ŒSchool Bell by Eleanor
Farjeon.
Raman, who is also a keen cricketer,
said: “I had practised the piece
for at least three months before the
festival but was still very nervous.
However, you can overcome your
nerves if you just remember to do
your very best.
The Timperley youngster who
would like to become a Mathematics
teacher, added: “It was great fun
learning the piece and standing up in
front of the judges, but it was even
more fun to win the award. It’s a great
honour.”
Nuala Thompson commented:
“Practice makes perfect and Raman
gave a rendition that delighted
everyone in the auditorium.”
Home to school transport falls
under spotlight
TRAFFORD Council’s Executive is
studying a report recommending a
Borough wide consultation on a
proposed new Home to School
Transport Policy.
If approved, the intention would be
to hold a formal consultation from
Monday, 6 June until Wednesday 13
July 2011.
Currently free transport is given to
some pupils because their parents
choose to send them to schools other
than their nearest qualifying school.
This type of transport is at the discretion
of the local authority and over and
above statutory requirements.
The total cost of providing home to
school transport for mainstream pupils
and those with special educational
needs has been increasing year on year
and now costs £3.4m.
The Ipsos Mori survey carried out as
part of Trafford’s spending challenge
identified this as the lowest of the Children
and Young People’s Service priorities.
The youth cabinet and neighbourhood
forums also identified it as an area
where savings should be made.
Trafford’s Corporate Director of Children
and Young People’s Service Deborah
Brownlee said that the proposed
policy is designed to support and protect
those local families on the lowest
income and those children with special
educational needs.
Residents can now
recycle food waste
TRAFFORD residents can now recycle
their food waste using their green
bin after a new bio-waste composting
facility opened in Trafford Park
which can compost both garden and
food waste.
Food waste includes: meat and fish,
raw and uncooked including bones;
dairy products, such as yoghurt and
cheese; raw and cooked vegetables
and fruit; bread, cakes and pastries;
rice, pasta and beans; tea bags and coffee
grounds and plate scrapings. No
liquids should be put into the green
bin, such as milk, juice or cooking oil.
All other refuse and recycling bin collections
will remain the same.

Adoption by step parents
A COMMON issue raised
by many parents is “My
son or daughter would
like to be adopted by
their stepmother or stepfather”,
and often it’s the
case where a child has
little or no contact with
the other birth parent,
having been brought up
by the stepparent often
from a young age.
So what’s the process?
Stepparent adoption is
provided for, under the
Adoption and Children Act
2002, and it is a requirement
that the child has lived with
the stepparent for at least
six months prior to the
application being made.
Laws have changed allowing
the stepparent to apply
to adopt without their partner
having to also apply.
However normally, the consent
of both natural parents
is required unless a Court
orders otherwise or unless
one parent is no longer alive.
Consent may also be waived
if the other natural parent
cannot be found, as long as
enquiries have been made to
locate them.
A Notice of Intention to
Adopt must be sent to the
Local Authority which is
valid for two years, with a
waiting period of three
months from the date of the
notice before an application
can be made to the Court.
The Local Authority will
liaise directly with you as a
family, including home visits
where questions are raised
about family life and the
reasons behind the application.
The child’s wishes are
also considered, but of
course this factor is dependent
on their age. The Local
Authority has a duty to
ensure it is in the best interests
of the child for the adoption
to take place. They will
then submit a report to the
Court which will ultimately
decide whether to grant an
Adoption Order.
All parties should be prepared
for the process to
take some time, however a
good solicitor will always
be on hand to advise along
the way.

MGS producing record number of doctors
YOUNG doctors from The Manchester
Grammar School have
produced a perfect 10 as a
record number of students have
gained entry to Britain’s top
Medical schools.
And these include students from
Sale, Altrincham, Bowdon, Old Trafford,
Hale and Hale Barns.
This year a total of 39 MGS Sixth
Form students have received offers
with 33 students reading medicine,
five choosing dentistry and one for
veterinary medicine.
The numbers are up from last year’s
record total of 31 Sixth Form students
who went on to read Medicine and
Dentistry, up from 23 in 2009 and 16 in
2008. The figure is an astonishing 21%
percent of the year group.
Head of Sixth Form, Patrick Thom,
said: ‘This is a record for MGS and in
today’s increasingly competitive
environment this represents a fantastic
success story.
“It is a tribute to the talent and
hard work of these young men and to
the dedication and skill of those who
teach them.We are not just a regional
but a national centre of excellence in
preparing students for entry to medical
school.”
Four of these offers for Medicine
are from Cambridge and Admissions
Tutor, Professor David Cardwell,
commented: ‘The admission of this
number of students to read medicine
at Cambridge from a single school is
unusually high”
High Master, Dr Christopher Ray,
added: “Every one of the 39 MGS students
achieving an medical offer in this
incredibly competitive year for university
places has thoroughly deserved his
remarkable success.

The Manchester Grammar
School Sixth Form student
was among the top
180 of Britain’s brightest
young chemists from an
initial entry of 2604 students
to win the prestigious
gold medal.
Laith, 17, from Gorse
Bank, Hale Barns, who has
an offer to read Medicine
at Trinity College, Cambridge,
said: “Chemistry
involves a study of the
materials of the natural
world and the way that
man can change them for
his convenience. It is fascinating
to see the building
blocks of life on a microscopic
scale.”
Chris Buckley, MGS’s
Head of Chemistry, commented:
“The Olympic
paper comprises a series of
very demanding problems,
some way above A Level,
and is a real challenge. As
such it gives our lads something
to strive for and they
really enjoy the preparation
in their spare time.”
He added: “It has been a
real privilege to work with

Crime figures
drop dramatically
LATEST crime figures show
that the Safer Trafford Partnership*
(STP) has significantly
reduced crime and
anti-social Behaviour in Sale
and Altrincham over the
past year.
In Sale, violent crime has
fallen by 67 per cent since
last year and less serious
assaults have fallen by
almost a quarter. This has
undoubtedly saved lives
and livelihoods and represents
the largest reduction
in violent crime in Trafford.
At the same time, robbery
has reduced by half, and
theft of motor vehicle has
reduced by 37 per cent.
Meanwhile it was also
good news in Altrincham.
Anti-social behaviour has
fallen by 30 per cent with
over a 1000 fewer incidents.
In addition serious violent
crime has fallen by 21 per
cent since last year, robbery
has reduced by a quarter
and household burglary has
reduced by 21 per cent.

Vote of Thanks for the Independent
follows saving of Wellgreen Lodge
WITHIN minutes of the threat of
closure being lifted from Wellgreen
Lodge in Hale, The Independent
was receiving a vote of thanks for
its support of the pressure group
behind the successful campaign.
Geoff Swindells, the spokesman for
the defence group was the first to
express his gratitude, soon followed by
many of the elderly residents whose
plight became a matter of public concern
after being featured in this paper.
“Our committee has worked tirelessly
to prevent the axe from falling
but I believe it was the coverage from
your paper which highlighted our concerns
– and got them noticed by the
people who count,” says Geoff
Swindells.
Geoff revealed that members of the
action committee had worked tirelessly
to canvas support not only from the relatives
of the residents of Wellgreen but
from the surrounding community.
People had pounded the streets
delivering leaflets calling for the threat
of closure to be lifted until the momentum
reached a pitch where it simply
couldn’t be ignored.
Such activities brought to the attention
of the Trafford Housing Trust that
closing the doors at Wellgreen would
not only result in suffering for the residents
but also the surrounding community.
This was because Wellgreen has been
an unofficial community centre for
older people in the locality for many
year – offering line dancing, hot pot
suppers, and even getting groups
Residents and friends of Wellgreen
Lodge wait to hear the final decision
together go on holiday.
Much of this has been down to
Libby Swindells, the scheme manager,
who more than anyone was responsible
for ensuring that Wellgreen was not
seen as a place where people went to
die but to enjoy themselves in their
declining years.
However the final word has to go to
Geoff Swindells: “I imagine there were
a lot of people who questioned the way

hedgehogs has declined by
more than 50% in the last
decade alone. Climate

prestigious University Social
Responsibility Award
AWARDS are almost always
well deserved, but sometimes
they find their way to
people who deserve them
more than most! Ann Johnson,
a resident at Sunrise of
Hale Barns, has just been
awarded the prestigious
‘University of Manchester
Social Responsibility Award
for 2011’.
Ann, back this week from
speaking to Trinity College
Dublin, was diagnosed with
Alzheimer’s disease at the age
of 52 and exhibits all of the
symptoms of short-term memory
loss.
This has, however, not
stopped her giving much of her
time to speaking out to the
wider community, both in the
UK and abroad, about living
with Alzheimer’s.
In her desire to spread the
message about the possibility
of living a full life with
Alzheimer’s, Ann dedicates
much of her time to the
Alzheimer’s Society and Manchester
University speaking to
professionals, nurses in training
and the public. Due to the
role she has undertaken, she
has become a leading
spokesperson for those who
have dementia but no longer
have the voice to speak out.

More parking
available in
Altrincham
for 10p
THERE are now ninety additional
parking spaces available
at Oakfield Road car park in
Altrincham, less that a 10 minute
walk to the centre of town, following
the demolition of Oakfield
House.
The area, previously taken up by
the building, has been made suitable
for use as car parking, adding
to the number of spaces available at
Oakfield Road.
The new parking tariffs were
introduced in April following a consultation
with residents, local businesses
and key groups and are
designed to support local businesses
in the borough’s town centres. Feedback
from the consultation showed
consultees were in favour of a low
initial charge to encourage people to
make better use of the town centres
and that all day parking prices in
off-street car parks should be
increased slightly.
The charges are now 10p for one
hour, 30p for two, 70p for three
hours and all day at £3.
Executive Councillor Alan
Mitchell said: “There has been a positive
response to our new parking
tariffs and I am delighted that there
is now even more space for people to
park to shop and visit Altrincham.”

ALTRINCHAM really matters to
me! I was born and have lived and
worked here all my life. I am one
of the owners of a business
employing over 20 people in the
town.
Accordingly, in my year as President
of the Chamber of Commerce – and
more particularly as its 100th President
– I want to make sure that the
people of Trafford know more about
the great work we do.
The Chamber is an independent
body, working to help its members
boost the commerce of Altrincham,
Sale and the surrounding areas. We
are completely independent from Trafford
Council but we do work closely
with them and they think of the
Chamber as key influencers and contributors
to the development of our
town as we strive to return it to its former

Flying start for charity ride
thanks to bicycle village fun day
WET weather couldn’t
dampen the spirits of
some 200 people who
turned out for the Bicycle
Village Fun Day
which is now likely to
become an annual event.
Organised by Arek Bartniczak
and his girlfriend
Sarah to provide funds for
their forthcoming charity
bike ride taking in three
European cities, the event
raised in the region of £1,000.
Free to enter, the money
came from a series of raffles
and auctions held during the
event which centred on the
theme of everything you
ever wanted to know or
experience on a bicycle.
Highlights of the event
included:
• Kids Art Workshop
• Bikes for all abilities
• Pedal power music (also
harnessed to provide power
for the stage)
• The Bicyle Museum
with visitors being able to
try out a range of antique
bikes including a Penny Farthing
• Bike parts swap
• Canoeing
The success of the event
brought a “huge thank you”
from the Children’s Animal
Farm Trust, the charity that
will benefit from Arek and
Sarah’s sponsored ride in
July.

‘Centre of Excellence’ for Weight Loss Surgery
SPIRE Manchester Hospital
has become the first
hospital in the North West
to be awarded ‘Centre of
Excellence’ status from
the International Federation
for the Surgery of
Obesity and Metabolic
Disorders (IFSO) for its
high-quality weight loss
surgery service.
The accreditation means
that Spire Manchester Hospital
has met rigorous standards
for the effective and
safe treatment of morbidly
obese patients.
The hospital had to prove to
an independent committee
that its bariatric surgeon’s
each had a minimum of five
years’ experience performing
weight loss procedures, as
well as its investment in specialised
facilities and a dedicated
team who effectively
treat and manage morbidly
obese patients from initial
consultation to providing lifelong
aftercare.
Spire Manchester Hospital
is currently only one of six
hospitals across the country
to achieve the accreditation
and is hoping to promote it to
other hospitals and healthcare
providers as a national
standard for obesity care.
Given the rising obesity figures
with 24% of British
adults reported to be obese
and more seeking a surgical
solution, providing high-quality
treatment is a priority in
ensuring their safe and effective
management.
Professor Basil Ammori,
director of bariatric surgery
at Spire Manchester Hospital,
explains: “Patient demand is
high and we have witnessed a
492% increase in patient
numbers over the last three
years (2007-2010). It is important
to demonstrate that
while volume is increasing, it
is not at detriment to quality.
At Spire Manchester Hospital,
we have strived to set up
a very high quality bariatric
surgery service and our multidisciplinary
team has
acquired extensive experience
in this field.
I am proud of the achievements
we have made and see
this accreditation as international
recognition of the
team's efforts and a drive for
us to continue to fulfil our
aspirations for excellent outcomes
for our patients.”One of
the key areas of the accreditation
is demonstrating lifetime
follow-up for at least 75% of
cases through regular consultations,
dietary advice and
counselling.
Specialist bariatric nurse at
the hospital, Kath Rothwell,
has dedicated her career to
supporting patients through
the process.
Having had weight loss
surgery herself, she understands
more than most of the
challenges that surgical
patients face.
She explains: “Surgery is
only the beginning of the journey
for weight loss patients.
Providing ongoing support
and care plays a critical role
in ensuring successful longterm
weight loss.
When I had surgery over
five years ago, there was limited
aftercare available to me
and it was a real struggle to
adjust both to the physical
changes and a new way of life.
My own experience has
really motivated me into helping
others which is why we
offer a comprehensive aftercare
package at Spire Manchester
Hospital that includes
a 24 hour helpline, a bimonthly
support group and
ready access to dieticians,
specialist nurses, consultants
and counsellors.”
Surgery for weight loss prompted nurse’s dedication
KATH Rothwell has made
weight loss surgery her
life after she experienced
first-hand the health benefits
it can offer after
undergoing a gastric
bypass procedure in 2005.
It was the toughest decision
that she ever made,
but one that spurred her
to help develop bariatric
services firstly at the Manchester
Royal Infirmary
and then at Spire Manchester
Hospital in 2007.
“My own experience has
motivated me to help others
who are facing a similar
crossroads. It is important
that people understand
that surgery isn’t a
quick-fix solution and that
it takes a certain amount
of responsibility on the
part of the individual in
order to achieve successful
weight loss.
“We have helped to put
in place a great support
network and aftercare
process at Spire Manchester
Hospital so that people
do not feel isolated postsurgery
and can share in
the experiences of others.”

A FREE weight management
group is being set up for
young people and their families
in Trafford who are concerned
about their health
and want to make lifestyle
changes – and residents can
request one being set up in
their immediate area.
The group, aimed at children
aged seven to 13 who have
weight problems and their parents
and carers, is being run as
part of the Change 4 Life programme,
which aims to help
families eat well and move more
to give them a healthier outlook
for the future. The 12-week
course will be held on Wednesday
evenings at Firswood Community
Centre in Stretford from
families in Trafford
4.30pm to 5.30pm. During the
sessions, attendees will learn
how to eat a balanced diet and
will be able to pick up practical
tips on how to make healthy
food choices. They will also be
able to take part in a variety of
physical activities. Follow up
sessions will be available after
the group has finished to ensure
that families are fully supported
while working towards a
healthier lifestyle.
The groups have been
arranged by Fit for Life programme
manager Sam Hammond,
community dietitian
Judith Williams and school
nurse Lisa Webster.
Sam commented: “We know
that taking the first step to
tackling weight management
issues can be intimidating, but
the groups provide a supportive
environment where parents can
meet other parents who share
the same concerns, and children
can encourage each other and
have fun while learning about a
healthy lifestyle.”
Families can self-refer to the
programme or speak to a health
professional about being referred.
A dietitian will then carry out a
detailed assessment and Sam
will visit the family to discuss the
programme in more detail.

The Azores – where tourism is in
its infancy
THE Azores form an enchanting
archipelago of nine emerald green
islands set in the Atlantic ocean
between Portugal and North
America.
Because of their remote location,the
traditional lifestyle of the Azores,outside
of the main towns, has remained
virtually unchanged. The pace of life is
slow and tourism is in its infancy.
The volcanic formation of the islands
has endowed them with a spectacular
natural beauty. Vast craters, blue
lakes,sheer black cliffs falling in to the
ocean, lush rolling valleys, rugged
mountains and hot mineral springs
and geysers combine to form a truly
diverse scenery found nowhere else in
the world.
The Azores are accessible and
rewarding all year round due to their
favorable climate. The Azores enjoy
pleasant temperatures all year round
with mild winters and warm summers.
There is a weekly flight from Manchester
to Ponta Delgado (Sao Miguel)
outbound flight via London Gatwick
with a flying time of 4hrs 20 mins. The
local currency is the Euro but don't be
put off as this is the most reasonable
priced destination I have visited in the
EuroZone.
The Azores is a nature lover's paradise.
Each of the nine Islands offers a
wealth of activities to suit all interests
and abilities. My personal favorite has
to be The Caldeira das Sete Cidades
which is one of the most beautiful and
imposing lakes on the Island of São
Miguel, nestling in a crater with a
sweeping 12-kilometre perimeter. The
unforgettable picture of the Verde
(green) lake and the Azul (blue) lake
set off by their surrounding trees and
flowers. The shores and small Azul
peninsula are ideal for walks and picnics
in the most natural of environments.
Legend has it that the lakes
have differing colours due to the tears
shed by a princess and a shepherd.
After finding their love forbidden, they
cried until the lakes at the crater bottom
were filled.
FOOD&DRINK
Wildlife is in abundance throughout
the year in The Azores. Various species
of whales and dolphin, including a pod
of male sperm whales, call the Atlantic
waters surrounding the archipelago
their home. If you enjoy relaxing on
the beach for an average of 8hrs a day
drinking pina coladas on a hourly basis
then The Azores is not for you but for
everyone else who enjoys somewhere
a little off the beaten track and has an
interest in the great outdoors then
The Azores is certainly the place to
visit.

Restaurant-style dish that’s
quick and really easy
Pan-fried plaice with
cauliflower purée and
butter sauce
INGREDIENTS
For the plaice
• 75ml/3fl oz white wine
• 50g/2oz sultanas
• 25g/1oz butter
• 8 small plaice fillets, skin and
pin bones removed
• 1 punnet mustard frills
For the cauliflower purée
• 1 cauliflower, cut into florets
• 50g/2oz butter
• 110ml/4fl oz double cream
• salt and freshly ground black
pepper
For the butter sauce
• 1 shallot, finely diced
• 1 tbsp white wine vinegar
• 1 tbsp cold water
• 225g/8oz salted butter, cut into
cubes
PREPARATION
METHOD
1. For the plaice, warm the
white wine in a saucepan, then
add the sultanas and set aside
to soak for a couple of minutes.
2. Drain the raisins, reserving
the wine and set aside.
3. For the cauliflower purée,
cook the cauliflower florets in a
pan of salted boiling water for
4-5 minutes, or until just tender.
4. Drain the cauliflower and
blend in a blender with the
butter and cream until
smooth. Season with salt and
freshly ground black pepper
and keep warm.
5. For the butter sauce, heat
the shallot, vinegar and
reserved white wine in a
saucepan until boiling. Continue
to cook until the volume
of the liquid is about two tablespoons.
Add the water and
continue to cook until the volume
of the liquid is one tablespoon.
6. Reduce the heat and
whisk in the butter, a cube at a
time, until well combined.
Pass the sauce through a sieve
into a clean saucepan and season
with salt and freshly
ground black pepper.
7. Season the plaice with a
little salt.
8. Melt the butter for cooking
the plaice in a frying pan
until foaming, add the plaice
fillets, presentation-side down
and cook for 1-1 1 ⁄2 minutes, or
until just cooked. Turn over
and cook for another 45 seconds.
9. Remove the plaice fillets
from the pan and set aside to
rest for a couple of minutes.
10. To serve, spoon the cauliflower
purée into the centre of
serving plates. Top each plate
with two of the plaice fillets
and spoon the soaked raisins
around the edge.
11. Spoon the butter sauce
over them and finish with a
scattering of the mustard
frills.

Sale Sharks call in SAS to prepare for next season
IT WILL be a case of
‘Who Dares Wins’ for Sale
this summer, with Sharks
supremo Steve Diamond
calling in the SAS to help
prepare his new-look
squad for next season.
He intends to use the
training skills of the toughest
military outfit in the
world to help pound the
Sharks into shape when
they return for pre-season
training next month.
Diamond revealed he
has a contact within the
elite fighting unit and visited
the SAS HQ in Hereford
earlier this month to
discuss fostering a close
working relationship with
the unit.
“I went to meet the SAS
after the Gloucester game
the other weekend along
with Pete Anglesea, Mark
Cueto and Dwayne Peel,”
Diamond said.
“I’ve got a mate who is a
senior member of the regiment
and they are going to
do some team building with
us in the summer.
“Whether it means them
coming to us or us going
down to Hereford we’re still
working on but one way or
another we will be working
with them.
“The thinking behind
using the SAS is that working
with them will help take
us out of our usual environment.
Like any job, rugby
can get boring if you constantly
do the same things
day in and day out.
“It’s good to see how people
do things differently and
they have got an understanding
of high performance
at the highest level
and we are coming from an
environment of non high
performance. I just thought
given the contacts I’ve got,
why not use the best and see
what we can get.
“The first sessions will
take place over the summer
and, hopefully, we can build
up a relationship with the
military and take things
from there.”

two-game pre-season programme
for 2011-12, with Edinburgh
Rugby and Glasgow Warriors visiting
Edgeley Park in August.
The new-look Sharks assembled
by Steve Diamond will take the
field against the Celtic League outfits
on successive Fridays:

Friday 26th August
v. Glasgow Warriors
Kick Off times have to be confirmed,
but are likely to be 7.45
p.m. Sharks Executive Director of
Sport Steve Diamond commented,
“Both Edinburgh and Glasgow will
provide good competition. It’s
important, with a new squad, that
we play at home.”
Both teams are seasoned European
campaigners and will provide
stern tests for the Sharks. Fraser
McKenzie is likely to be facing his
former playing colleagues when
the men from Murrayfield come to
Stockport on August 19th, whilst a
week later, Glasgow will be looking
to avenge their pre-season 23-22
defeat at Firhill last year. Tom
Brady won that game with a try in
the corner, and he was to score
again on his Aviva Premiership
debut against Newcastle Falcons a
fortnight later.
Season Tickets have been selling
well this week, and Season Ticket
holders are reminded that they
have the choice of which of these
two pre-season games they attend,
as part of their Season Ticket package.
Sharks have no plans to play a
pre-season match away.
