Stephen shapes up
Derek motivates Stephen during a personal training sesion.
As new Paralympic heroes
were being crowned in Beijing,
Sunshine Coast resident Stephen
Rose was overcoming his
intellectual disability to achieve his
own personal fitness goals, thanks
to an inspiring local personal
trainer.
Stephen works out with
Sunshine Coast trainer Derek
Kennedy who has worked the
training session into his weekly
routine of activities.
Sunshine Coast Adult
Accommodation Service
Household Facilitator Andrew
Leeding said Stephen’s individual
needs were identified and steps
were taken to improve his quality
of life.
“We searched high and low
for a personal trainer to work
with Stephen who has a range of
special needs due to intellectual
and physical disabilities. Derek
recognised Stephen’s unique
condition and requirements and
has tailored a specific fitness
program that incorporates his
needs,” Mr Leeding said.
Derek has run gyms around
the world for the past 20 years,
including the past four years
running Pulse Personal Training
on the Sunshine Coast.
“It is important when designing
workouts for people with a
disability to keep confidence high
whilst progressively increasing
limitations,” Mr Kennedy said.
“It’s been amazing to see
Stephen’s stability, coordination
and motor skills progressing with
each session and his weight has
begun to stabilise,” he said.
“These sessions are not just
about improving fitness they also
provide a sense of enjoyment and
allowed him to socialise outside
his regular day-to-day routine.”
