senior majority, and obtained all the <strong>of</strong>ficers for the<br />
corps."<br />
A number <strong>of</strong> gentlemen were invited to become <strong>of</strong>ficers<br />
by a circular reading as follows:<br />
Dear Sir,<br />
Montreal, August i8, 1875.<br />
I am authorized by Capt. Fred Mackenzie, senior<br />
stamp to form ten companies could be enrolled in a very<br />
short time, and it is only necessary that <strong>of</strong>ficers <strong>of</strong> every<br />
grade, men <strong>of</strong> capacity, position and experience, should<br />
be nominated without delay.<br />
"It is propo.scd to bring up the strength <strong>of</strong> the Battalion<br />
to ten companies,— to change the name to<br />
"<strong>Royal</strong> Fusileers,"—to wear the Fusileer Bearskin,—tr<br />
have attached to the corps a full military band, as well<br />
as a drum corps,—and to introduce a number <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>of</strong>ficer <strong>of</strong> the uxisting detachment <strong>of</strong> the 5th <strong>Royal</strong> Light<br />
Infantry, to ask if you would be willing to assist in the<br />
reorganization <strong>of</strong> that corps. The support <strong>of</strong> the members<br />
<strong>of</strong> the late Grand Trimk Battalion has been secured,<br />
and the services <strong>of</strong> the best men <strong>of</strong> the large body <strong>of</strong><br />
discharged soldiers now living in Montreal, have been<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>fered, so that circumstances <strong>of</strong> an exceptionally<br />
favorable kind <strong>of</strong>fer<br />
themselves to that end.<br />
"It is quite certain that sufficient men <strong>of</strong> the right<br />
schemes calculated to foster a true esprit-de-corps, among<br />
its members.<br />
"The matter, if promptly dealt with, will certainly<br />
result in success, and the "Old Corps" will reappear, as<br />
it used to be, second to none in prestige, style, physicjue,<br />
drill, and, it is to be hoped, in .smart and capable <strong>of</strong>ficers.<br />
"If sufficient encouragement is given, I am instructed<br />
to say that a meeting will at once be called for prelim-
