section <strong>of</strong> the population, and a mob attacked and wrecked<br />

an east-end vaccination depot, and marching to the<br />

City Hall, proceeded to break the windows. The following<br />

dav threats were made to attack other municipal<br />

buildings, and the residences <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficials and others who<br />

had shown activity in connection with the vaccination<br />

and isolation campaign. To assist the city jiolice force,<br />

the whole <strong>of</strong> the local militia corps were called out that<br />

suit <strong>of</strong> the constant expectation, earlier in the j'ear, <strong>of</strong> a<br />

call to active service in the Northwest. The <strong>Royal</strong><br />

<strong>Scots</strong> turned out in full strength, Ivieut.-Colonel Caverhill<br />

being in command.<br />

The first night the troo])s were called out was one<br />

<strong>of</strong> much excitement in Montreal. The residences <strong>of</strong> .several<br />

aldermen and <strong>of</strong>ficials in various parts <strong>of</strong> the city<br />

had been threatened with attack, and while detachments<br />

were posted to protect some <strong>of</strong> them, and the municipal<br />

night. The late Lieut. -Col B. Van Htranben/ie, then.<br />

Deputy Adjutant General, being absent from the<br />

city, the command devolved upon I/ieut.-Col. A. A.<br />

Stevenson, commanding the Montreal Field Battery, but<br />

the next day Major General Sir Fred Middle ton, the G.<br />

O.C., caine down from Ottawa to supervise the arrangements,<br />

and expressed his satisfaction with what had been<br />

done.<br />

All <strong>of</strong> the city cori)s at this time turned out promptly,<br />

the interior organization being very complete as a rebiiildings,<br />

patrols were sent out through other parts <strong>of</strong><br />

the city where trouble was feared. The whole regiment<br />

<strong>of</strong> the <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Scots</strong>, accomjjanied by a magistrate, was<br />

despatched on patrol duty through a portion <strong>of</strong> the<br />

west end, returning to the regimental head(|uartcrs in the<br />

upper storey <strong>of</strong> the Bonsecours Market building, without<br />

incident.<br />

Quiet being restored in the city proper, most <strong>of</strong><br />

the brigade was dismissed from active service, one regiment<br />

being kept on duty to supply guards for the armories<br />

and the exhibition buildings at Mile End. Some
