ANNEX 2<br />

Preparation & Mobilisation<br />

• Presentation of project set-up to women <strong>and</strong> men from all stakeholder groups, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g children.<br />

What is expected from them <strong>and</strong> what outcomes do they expect? Make sure poor families will also<br />

be present.<br />

• Assessment of the exist<strong>in</strong>g skills, knowledge <strong>and</strong> attitude of the different groups towards their own<br />

hygiene practices <strong>and</strong> their read<strong>in</strong>ess to change.<br />

• Identification of key stakeholders <strong>and</strong> sett<strong>in</strong>g up of a representative committee with equal<br />

representation of all stakeholders, e.g. children, teachers <strong>and</strong> parents of both sexes, different age<br />

groups, all social classes, religions, castes, ethnic groups, etc.<br />

Self-Assessment & Identification<br />

• Participatory consultations with the stakeholders separated by target group (students, teachers,<br />

parents <strong>and</strong> community), gender <strong>and</strong> age to discuss hygiene practices.<br />

• Interactive workshops with the committee to <strong>in</strong>troduce the participat<strong>in</strong>g groups to hygiene <strong>and</strong><br />

sanitation pr<strong>in</strong>ciples.<br />

• Self-assessment by the committee on current hygiene <strong>and</strong> sanitation facilities <strong>and</strong> practices <strong>and</strong><br />

identification of problems <strong>and</strong> needs.<br />

• Formulation of key problems, needs <strong>and</strong> priorities <strong>and</strong> presentation of the outcome of the selfassessment<br />

to the other stakeholders.<br />

Design & Formulation<br />

• Formulation of preconditions for design solutions: necessary capacity, fund<strong>in</strong>g, approaches for<br />

different age groups, availability of materials, etc.<br />

• By the use of appropriate participatory tools, review of possible options for systems, materials,<br />

layouts <strong>and</strong> locations, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g their implications on costs, operation <strong>and</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>tenance.<br />

• If possible, a project visit to other locations with similar hygiene <strong>and</strong> sanitation facilities as those<br />

proposed.<br />

• Design of several alternatives <strong>and</strong> preparation of accessible presentations (perspective draw<strong>in</strong>gs,<br />

scale models, etc.).<br />

• Presentations of designs by the committee to all stakeholders <strong>and</strong> jo<strong>in</strong>t selection of the most<br />

appropriate design.<br />
