N SAN JOSE I was asked to do some<br />
I portraits of Kirpal Singh. If you have<br />
ever looked into His eyes and looked into<br />
a camera, which through its limitational<br />
viewing brings the attention into<br />
eye focus, you can imagine what happens<br />
when you combine the two experiences.<br />
I was using a view-camera of sorts,<br />
which heightened the photographic-viewing<br />
experience. I looked into the groundglass<br />
and came out shaking my head, I<br />

Then the Master was a perfect subject.<br />
His attention was always on me. He<br />
was there one thousand per cent and<br />
wanted also to please. By this I mean He<br />
went through all of the standard facial<br />
attitudes one would expect from a per- .<br />
fect subject. This was for the photographer<br />
and those who wanted the photoraphy.<br />
He didn't want to be photographed.<br />
He would ask, "What is this<br />
for? There are so many already." Nonetheless,<br />
He also wanted to please. "What<br />
do you want?" He frequently asked.<br />
Frankly, I was too frightened to tell<br />
Him. What I wanted was for Him to<br />
