RAJIV GANDHI NATIONAL INSTITUTE
OF YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
As youth development constitutes a core component of national development in the context of
building human resources in a vast country like ours, it was felt that there must be a national
organization to identify all the relevant aspects of youth motivation and to develop and design
programmes for promoting youth welfare. With this objective, Rajive Gandhi National Institute
of Youth Development (RGNIYD) was set up as an autonomous body by the Department of Youth
Affairs and Sports, Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India and
registered under Societies Registration Act, XXVII of 1975 S.No. 67 of 1993.
It has emerged as a professional resources agency, and acts as a think-tank of the Ministry of
Youth Affairs and Sports, and assists the Government and Non-government agencies in youth
related activities. As the apex Institute at the national level, it works in close cooperation with the
NSS, NYK and other youth organization in the implementation of training programmes. The
Institute is a nodal agency for training youth and a facilitator of youth development activities in
rural as well as in urban areas.
RGNID Bill 2011 for converting the institute into an Institute of national importance has been
introduced in Parliament on 21.12.2011.
