4.4.4 Place of Birth
Assuming present immigration policies, the proportion of Canadian adults who will have to come
Canada from other countries will reach 28 per cent in 2026 from the current 21 per cent. As noted
earlier, Canada’s major cities will be the reception centres for many of the country’s new residents.
By 2026, over half of Toronto’s population will be new immigrants to Canada (54%). The same
scenario will be in place for Vancouver (53%). An appreciably lower proportion of the Montréal
population will be new Canadians by 2026 (28%) but this proportion is noticeably higher than the
current level (20%). As noted elsewhere in this report, increases in the proportion of new Canadians
over the next two decades will likely pose special challenges for the Soft Outdoor Adventure
Enthusiast market segment.
