Next Phase - Wood used with an Ecocina Stove
will be measured this March
• A team from the University of Oregon will
measure the wood used
• Alternative Spring Break
• Results will be compared to the baseline
measurements
Lessons Learned During Phase 1
• Volunteers had to record readings on separate
paper
– Multiple bundles of wood
– Ocote
• Typically, the teams split in two and one team
measured wood and the other talked to the
cook
– Split the form accordingly
– Provide two clip boards to each team
Units Used by Locals are Different
• Molinadas de maiz
• Tasa de café
• Manzana de terreno
• Plastico de masa
• Una libra de arroz
• Una cuchara
• Un abrazo de leña
Detailed interviews were
uncomfortable and lengthy
• The women did not understand
• Questions were too personal or confusing
– How much money do you earn?
– How many children are in the household
– Level of education
• We asked for a bit too much information
– Specifics for each meal
• Health terminology was too complicated
• People didn’t know their age
Next Steps
• Complete the follow-up testing in March
• Compute the annual wood saved on a per
family basis
• A 20% reduction of wood (dry) used equates to
2.5 tons of carbon dioxide per year
• This is about 0.7 tons of carbon
• A 50% reduction would save 1.8 tons of carbon
per year
