Our Teachers<br />

<strong>Swami</strong> Sivananda (1887 – 1963)<br />

One of the greatest saints of modern<br />

times, this renowned sage is the<br />

inspiration behind the Sivananda Yoga<br />

Vedanta Centres. <strong>Swami</strong> Sivananda<br />

summarised the essence of the yoga<br />

practice as follows: « Serve, love, give,<br />

purify, meditate, realise ».<br />

<strong>Swami</strong> <strong>Vishnudevananda</strong> (1927 – 1993)<br />

<strong>Swami</strong> <strong>Vishnudevananda</strong> is a disciple of <strong>Swami</strong> Sivananda.<br />

Known as a world-wide authority on Hatha and Raja Yoga,<br />

<strong>Swami</strong> <strong>Vishnudevananda</strong> is the founder of the International<br />

Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres. He led a tireless life as a<br />

messenger for world peace. He is the author of the bestselling<br />

books « The Complete Illustrated Book of Yoga and<br />

« Meditation and Mantras ».<br />

Helpful reminder<br />

During your stay at the ashram, attendance at all<br />

programmes is required. In order to maintain the spiritual<br />

atmosphere, no meat, fish, alcohol, tobacco, coffee, black<br />

tea, eggs, and drugs are allowed. Their use may lead to<br />

dismissal from the ashram.<br />

The meals offered are lacto-vegetarian. We cannot cater<br />

to special dietetic needs during your stay at the ashram.<br />

What to bring<br />

A yoga mat, meditation cushion (both of which are available<br />

in our shop), a blanket, a towel, a torch, comfortable and<br />

appropriate clothing for a stay in a spiritual centre, slippers,<br />

and comfortable walking shoes.<br />

Karma Yoga programmes<br />

Work-Study Programme<br />

The work-study programme is suitable for those who would<br />

like to experience the yoga life style for a minimum of one<br />

month and are already familiar with the Ashram and the<br />

teachings of the Sivananda Centres. The disciplined<br />

programme includes five hours of karma yoga per day and is<br />

directed at students who are familiar with the teachings of<br />

the Sivananda Centres. Prior interview with <strong>Swami</strong><br />

Kailasananda (the Ashram director) is necessary. You can<br />

post your application by sending your name, address,<br />

telephone number, email, birth date, the reason why you<br />

want to participate, your previous experience with yoga, your<br />

qualifications and the skills that could benefit the Ashram.<br />

Full Karma Yoga Programme<br />

This programme is suitable for those interested in fully<br />

committing to a spiritual life. Familiarity with the Ashram<br />

and the teachings of the Sivananda Centres is a prerequisite.<br />

The minimum length of this programme is three months.<br />

Prior interview with <strong>Swami</strong> Kailasananda (the Ashram<br />

director) is necessary.<br />
