Are You Ready
for the Big One?
- Frank Yu, VP of Advocacy
Recently we have had the
fortune of being on top of
multiple earthquakes over the
past few days. There was even
one centered right in Clark
Kerr. Consider these all a gentle
reminder to think about what
would you do in the event of a
significant earthquake. If you
grew up in California, you had
Earthquake responses drilled
into your heads in elementary
and secondary school, but what
about the aftermath? Are you
prepared for the lack of water
and electricity that will follow a
large earthquake? For those
who haven't had "years" of
training, it's healthy to be a
little worried. Let that push you
to take some initiative and to
get informed. We in RHA are
here to help you with that. Look
out for events in your unit
geared towards raising
earthquake awareness in the
residence halls. Let the Earth's
recent love taps remind you of
what you have to lose.
RHA Supports…
- Tim Ault, VP of Admin & Finance
RHA is already putting its sponsorship money to great use
by supporting fantastic programs in the residence halls.
Last month, RHA voted to allocate $1200 to Monster Bash,
a Halloween-themed dance that takes place in the Foothill
Dining Commons. RHA considers three criteria when
evaluating sponsorships: resident involvement, resident
impact, and advertising in the residence halls. Monster
Bash exceeded expectations in all three categories. This is
a great alcohol-free alternative to some other Halloween
parties that may be going on in the Berkeley area, as well
as a great way to meet people from different units, all while
having loads of fun! Kudos to the Unit 4 staff for putting it
together once again. RHA couldn’t be happier with its first
sponsorship award, and we hope it sets the bar high for
other programs throughout the year.

Food Review: Cinnaholic
- Natasha Chowdry, U5 RHA Representative
Last Sunday I had the
pleasure of trying
Cinnaholic for the first
time with fellow RHA
representatives Diamond
Jerry and Freddy Hsu.
Located at 2132 Oxford
Street, Cinnaholic is Berkeley’s premier gourmet
cinnamon roll bar. They allow the customer to have
his or her own “customized” cinnamon roll experience.
You can choose the flavor of your roll, frosting, and
choose whatever toppings you want to add on top. As
an advantage, all their rolls are 100 percent vegan.
On our visit there, we were able to experience
three different rolls. Each person’s experience was
unique to his or her own preferences. Diamond
ordered a specialty roll: the chocolate chip cookie
dough roll. She commented that the roll had just the
right balance of flavors and that the cinnamon was
very prominent in the roll. Freddy chose to make his
own combo of flavors: An ‘old-fashioned’ roll with
caramel frosting and hazelnuts to top it off. He said
that the caramel frosting was sweet and tasty and was
complemented well with the crunchiness of the
hazelnuts. I ordered the daily special, which was an
old-fashioned roll with vanilla frosting and an
assortment of fresh berries on top. The tartness from
the berries really complemented the sweetness form
the frosting well. We all enjoyed little boxes of soymilk
to wash it all down. All in all it was a very enjoyable
experience and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend
this place to our friends.
Everyone knows that Cal is an amazing
school and that we achieve great things here so often that it
just seems like the normal for us. However, for most of us this
is the first time that we have experienced this type of
excellence since that our high schools weren’t the best in that
nation like our home now is. When people think about how
talented Cal is they normally think about the academics and
they rarely think of the athletic aspect of our excellence. So
far this month Cal has 17 wins and only 8 losses across its 14
active sports without counting the high finishes in the
individual sports such as cross country and golf.
Representative (Assistant Editor)
“Improving the Quality of Life in the Residence Halls”
NOVEMBER EDITION
Both of Cal’s swimming teams have been dominating their
match ups so far and neither has lost a match to an opposing
school this month. The women’s team has won 4 matches and
in one of them the women Golden Bears completely
dominated winning first in a total of
13 of the 14 events. The men have
had only 2 match ups this month but
they have easily won both including a
great win against Hawaii.
Recently the Cal Golden Bears football team has been
struggling. However, this is due to the fact that after the
Bears bye week they have played two of their toughest
opponents of the season in Oregon and then USC. These both
ended up being losses for the Bears after going into them with
high expectations due to the inconsistent play of Cal’s offense.
But there is a silver lining to these defeats in the fact that
sophomore star Keenan Allen has been averaging 136.3 yards
receiving a game, a feat which has him number one in the
nation in this category and already flying towards an early
round pick for him in the 2013 NFL draft if he decides to
leave after his junior year at Cal. This
week Cal is projected to get back on track
to a bowl eligible season this week against
the Utes.

Residence Hall Times November 2011
The most dramatic sports so far this month
has by far been Cal’s soccer teams. Between
the men’s and women’s teams the Bears have
tied a total of 3 games out of 8 games. For the
men the result has been after the end of 2
overtimes against both Stanford and Oregon
State. The men’s team stands at 0-2-2 which is
0 wins, 2 ties, and 2 losses. The women’s team
is currently at 2-1-1 and has another match scheduled for this
weekend, which they won with the support of alum Alex Morgan
who was on hand to sign autographs and root the Golden Bears on
to a 2-0 victory.
Since these sports are difficult to gauge in regards as a unit we will
start summarizing how they have done so far this month. The Cal
cross country team has had 2 meets this month and so far neither
the men’s nor women’s teams have placed lower than 25th in either
of the competitions. The women’s team has been doing better,
finishing 7th and then 10th consecutively while the men’s team
finished 25th and then improved to 16th place in their most recent
competition. Meanwhile the golf team has been doing decent while
being led by Sammamish Wash who has tied for 1st place in the
first competition and then tied for third in the second match up
this month.
The team with the most wins at Cal so
far this month has easily been the
women’s volleyball team and the men’s
water polo team. The women’s
volleyball team is currently ranked #2
in the Pac-12 and is favored to win the
Pac-12 this year. Recently they
defeated the Huskies who were then
ranked #2 to steal their position and
force their way into the national rankings where they currently
stand at #27 in the nation! Their current record this season is 19-2
and they shouldn’t lose any more games this season so they should
be much higher, possibly in the top 10, by the end of the season.
The home games are free with a student ID and are very exciting to
go watch our ladies dominate any team that dares to come into
Bear Territory. Also the men’s water polo team has had a
tournament every weekend so far this month and they have
suffered their only 2 losses in overtimes (one in regular overtime
and one in sudden death overtime). They are 6-2 this month and
are projected to win the majority of their remaining games so a
Pac-12 championship season isn’t too far out of the question for our
gentlemen.
RESIDENCE HALL TIMES November 2011
RHA in
Pullman,
WA for
PACURH
2011
– Ferheen Abbasi, VP of
Communications/NCC
In a matter of days, the UC Berkeley delegation is going to
PACURH in Washington State University for PACURH. It’s a
stressful time for me as the National Communications
Coordinator and a slight perfectionist. There are many things to
do in a mere 14 days and it’s a bit chaotic. As I mentioned in last
month’s article, the UC Berkeley delegation has to do a few things
before the conference: create a Roll Call video, a banner, a display,
make costumes/spirit items and participate in the Philanthropy
Project that PACURH is hosting. The Roll Call video must be
about how Berkeley makes us feel at home. All of the other
schools around the region will be sending in their videos as well,
so we will be competing against a large number of schools. Next,
PACURH asks the delegations to create an electronic banner with
the same theme as the video. Then, we were given the task of
creating a display, with the same criterion. For this display, the
two delegates in charge of it want to make a miniature model of
the campus inside of a home. It must be created with all recycled
materials, so they may have to go dumpster diving for some of
those items. Another pair of delegates is in charge of thinking up
costumes that the delegates wear throughout PACURH weekend.
We decided to dress up as superheroes and create capes to wear
on that Friday. Finally there is a Philanthropy portion during
every conference, and this year, Washington State University
decided on sponsoring the soldiers overseas by creating a care
package that each delegation makes. So, as you can see, there are
MANY things that must be done in a matter of days so the UC
Berkeley delegates are super busy! Please stay tuned next month
to hear the conclusion of our fantastic trip!
School Supplies Drive
