Residence Hall Times
Product of the University of California, Berkeley Residence Hall Assembly
Chances are, many of you are heading somewhere away from Berkeley for the summer. If
you’re sticking around for a while, though, this is a great chance to see all the amazing places
around the area. It’s also a great time to get outdoors and go for a nice walk or run. I’ve come
across some pretty neat places in my four years here, but here are some of my favorites:
Tilden Regional Park: Take the 65 from Euclid and Hearst to get a vehicle to do all the hard
work for you getting up the hill. Head a little bit north of the parking lot to see the turtle-infested
Jewel Lake! There are also some gorgeous hillside loops passing through magnificent groves of
eucalyptus trees. If you’re feeling ambitious, see how far you can make it down the long trail
that ventures into Wildcat Canyon.
Lafayette Reservoir: For a little longer journey, take the BART from Rockridge to Orinda (one
stop) and run down the roads to this beautiful lake. There is a gorgeous trail running around the
entire perimeter, and wildlife abounds. Be warned; while the lakeshore itself is pretty flat, the
area is surrounded by some no-nonsense beasts of hills.
Up-and-Over: Start from Clark Kerr and march all the way over the hill towards Grizzly Peak
Blvd. Getting up there is tough, but you’re up there, you can see for miles both east and west,
and you’ve already done all the hard work. Glide down Lomas Cantadas to Alta Vista and get to
Orinda without ever using wheels. Bring $1.75 to take the BART back to Rockridge.
Enjoy!
RHA 2012-2013 New Staff
Melissa Ng
President
Martinez
One of my goals is for residents to know that if they have problems, we have
answers and if they have worries, we have solutions! They can email us as
rha-paws@berkeley.edu.
I love shopping for clothes and shoes, if anyone else would like to join me, feel
free to let me know! =]
Shelby Nacino
VP of Advocacy and Outreach
Unit 4, Foothill
My goals for next year are to continue RHA efforts to support
sustainability, educate the residents about where their money goes, and
strengthen RHA's community service efforts. I also want to best represent
the residents by making myself available to address all of their concerns.
I'm pretty big on eating mac and cheese. Seriously, it's like a thing.
Vincent Holden
VP of Administration and Finance
Unit 2, WADA!
Continue to represent residents in the Assembly by making sure we allocate funds
to programs and events that will help them back. I also can't wait to meet more
people while making a difference in other people's lives. :)
I'm a workaholic. I also like to think I have an obsessive compulsive disorder, a
mild one at least. I like being organized and ready!
Lastly, I grew up in the Philippines and moved here in California in 2008.
Palwasha Khatri
VP of Programming
Unit 3, Beverly Cleary
I'm really excited to work on making RHA and its programs more prominent
and visible in our residents' time in the Halls. It'd be really nice if every resident
attended at least one RHA large scale program over the course of the year. I
also want to make sure that RHA's programs provide a fun and relaxing break
from the stress we all face as being Berkeley students!
I’m obsessed with movies, any and all. My roommate and I have a list of about
100+ movies, new and classics, that we need to watch! If you ever need
someone to watch a movie with, I am definitely your person.
Next year I want to make sure that more people know about RHA
because it is an amazing organization! I also hope to get RHA
representatives more connected with NACURH/PACURH and the great
resources they provide for leaders in the residential halls.
I am from Los Angeles and love soccer, social media, photography, art,
watching movies and hanging out with my family and friends. I am
looking forward to working with this year's RHA staff and getting to
serve all of our wonderful residents.
I am a first year Molecular & Cell Biology major currently living in Bowles
Hall, and am looking forward to returning to Bowles Hall next year as a
mentor. I am excited to be helping some first-years adjust to their new
environment and helping the residence hall experience be the best that it
can be in the coming year.
Program Recap
Thank you all for taking the time to participate in the 4 large programs RHA put on!
First was All Hall-O-Ween where hundreds of little children were going through the halls trickor-treating.
Then came BearFest in People’s Park where each Hall Association put on a carnival-esque
activity for residents to enjoy and win prizes.
When the Spring semester rolled around, Unit 4 hosted Dance and Casino Night with a
fabulous DJ, fancy casino games and awesome prizes.
Last, but not least, we ended the year with Boat Dance! Over 1100 residents chartered over to
San Francisco to have a wonderful evening dancing on the beautiful San Francisco Belle
Cruise Ship.
Y’all may be wondering, “I had so much fun this year! Will these programs go on again?” My
answer for you is that RHA always puts on All Hall-O-Ween and BearFest in the Fall and a
TBD Spring Program and Boat Dance in the Spring. So no worries, you’ll get to have a blast
again next year! =]
PACURH Update
Fun facts about OTMs:
Back in the “day” before the current OTM database was created, all OTMs had to be
submitted by email. And, before email, OTMs had to be submitted by mail— and yes,
that’s snail mail. It would take quite a few months before the category winners were
announced! Needless to say, it was probably a great incentive to reach the word limit when
what your writing needed to be stamped and sent out!
Andrew Bell is the current owner and administrator of the OTM database. He is a NRHH
alumnus, and a great example of an alumnus who has stayed dedicated to the organization
after his service as a student. He is working full time, but maintains the database using a
grant given to him by his company!
OTMs are currently stored in a database at Kansas State University (which, subsequently is
the school Andrew Bell attended!)
You can chose alternate specific categories for OTMs, like Custodial or Desk Staff, but just
know that these will not be transferable on the regional or national level!
You can now “Like” OTMs on the database— and it’ll link right to your Facebook
account! !
Don’t forget, OTMs are due to the regional level on the 10th of each month! Keep on
recognizing!!
RESIDENCE HALL TIMES SUMMER 2012
This semester the Residence Hall Assembly
created a team for UC Berkeley’s annual Dance
Marathon. Dance Marathon (DM) is a 12-hour
marathon which consists of dancing, live
entertainment, games, FREE food, drinks, and
themed activities. The theme for DM this year
was “There’s no place like dance marathon,”
which inspired participants to come dressed like
the characters from The Wizard of Oz. Each year,
Dance Marathon aims to raise money for
the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS
Foundation. Every $19 that is donated to the cause saves the life of one baby, because that
covers the cost of supplies needed to prevent the transmission of the HIV virus from a
mother to her child. This year’s DM raised over $56,000 for pediatric AIDS; and, as
DM’s executive director, Sally Westcott said “that's a lot of babies!”
The RHA team consisted of representatives from Foothill, Channing-Bowditch, Unit 3,
and Unit 5. As the RHA team captain I would just like to thank Shelby Nacino, Theresa
Adams, and Eric Liu for joining our team and spending their Friday night with me at
Pauley Ballroom. Great job to everyone for all their fundraising and dancing efforts!
Tomadachi Softbank Youth Mentor Program
We currently have a mentorship program where we invite American high school students
to attend workshop activities and interact with Japanese students participating on the
Tomodachi Softbank Leadership Program. The Tomodachi Initiative is a public-private
partnership that supports Japan's recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake, and
invests in the next generation of Japanese and American high school students. We are
currently recruiting high school students to participate so we can provide a high Japanese:
American ratio to ensure that our Japanese students are personally introduced to American
culture. American students will also experience a rich cross-cultural curriculum in a college
setting. Our organization, Ayusa, has designed an intensive 3 week program for 300
Japanese high school students this summer at UC Berkeley that were affected by the
tsunami in March 2011. The Tomodachi program, in collaboration with UC Berkeley, will
focus on global leadership development and community service. The dates of the program
will be July 21st – August 12th.
A Letter From Your NCC
- Ferheen Abbasi, VP of Communications and NCC
This will be my last article update as the Vice President of Communications and NCC.
It’s been a fantastic year filled with laughs, love and late nights. As you’ve hopefully
previously read from all of my updates these past few months, I have been working
hard with scheduling and coordinating all conferences – NACURH, PACURH and
No Frills. In addition to that, my Internal Affairs Committee and I have created an
awesome Parliamentary Procedure video that will hopefully be shown for the rest of
RHA eternity. Not only that, the IA committee and I have worked hard on updated
the RHA Constitution and bylaws. This summer, I will be creating a new version of
the RHA Constitution on Word 2010 to update it to fit the newest technology. Also,
with the wrap up of the year comes the wrap up of the NACURH and PACURH
fiscal year. This year, the new NCC, Lisa Lim, will be leading 10 delegates and our
adviser to the University of Colorado, Boulder for NACURH 2012 – Pass the
Leadership Torch. I will be with Lisa during all boardroom sessions as the new
NRHH President for the 2012-2013 school year. At the moment, Lisa and I have been
working hard to prepare for NACURH 2012, with registration, plane ticket purchases,
delegation meetings, roll call videos, etc. If any of you are interested in coming to
these conferences and are coming back to live in the halls next year, please run for an
RHA Representative position and you will definitely have a chance of going! Thanks
for an awesome year and good luck with Finals! (:
