Welcome to the first edition of the <strong>Kahuku</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Center</strong><br />
Community Newsletter – “ha’i lono”! We are excited about the<br />
development of <strong>Kahuku</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Center</strong> and want to share the<br />
many things we are doing to be of service to you.<br />
First, we thank you - our community - for your continued support<br />
of the <strong>Kahuku</strong> Hospital / <strong>Kahuku</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Center</strong> transition.<br />
We are grateful for the leadership from both the <strong>Kahuku</strong><br />
Hospital and <strong>Kahuku</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Center</strong> Board, and the Hawaii<br />
State Legislature for safeguarding health care services in the<br />
Ko’olauloa and North Shore communities.<br />
Ha’i lono is a way to keep you informed of the services we<br />
provide to our community. There are many reasons why we are<br />
reaching out to you at this time. First and most important, as a<br />
resident of Ko’olauloa and the North Shore, you or a member of<br />
your family may be directly impacted by our care. Having high<br />
quality health care so close to home may be life saving to you.<br />

We are so proud and excited about the important upgrades<br />
we are now able to offer you in the <strong>Kahuku</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Center</strong>’s<br />
Emergency Room. To offer the highest quality care, we knew<br />

The new emergency room boasts new vinyl flooring, corner<br />
guards, ceiling tile, fire doors, signs, laminate surfaces, bathroom<br />
tile work, cubicle curtains, waiting room furniture, and<br />
also painting of all walls and door frames.<br />
The work started in the Fall of 2009 and was phased to keep<br />
the Emergency Department open and operational during<br />
construction. The work was completed February <strong>2011</strong>.<br />
A grand MAHALO to all who have generously donated their<br />
time, provided grants and/or materials to help us continue to<br />
serve our community!<br />

KMC recognizes and rewards success throughout the facility.<br />
The WOW program was established to reward employees for<br />
doing consistent, excellent work as well as “above and beyond”<br />
performance. The WOW of the year for 2010 was Julie<br />
Phipps, RN and KMC’s Long-Term Care Coordinator. Julie looks<br />
for opportunities to enhance the residents’ quality of life on a<br />
daily basis. She is a loyal KMC employee and a team player.<br />
Julie is the KMC “Adopt a Highway” champion. A true patient<br />
advocate!<br />

an effort to share our clinical care results with you, the Quality<br />
Corner will focus on specific areas/indicators we measure in<br />
the hospital to keep us focused on high quality care. Ultimately,<br />
we want to be accountable to the community we serve and that<br />
means you! Stay tuned to the next edition of ha’i lono where we<br />
