Welcome to the first edition of the Kahuku Medical Center
Community Newsletter – “ha’i lono”! We are excited about the
development of Kahuku Medical Center and want to share the
many things we are doing to be of service to you.
First, we thank you - our community - for your continued support
of the Kahuku Hospital / Kahuku Medical Center transition.
We are grateful for the leadership from both the Kahuku
Hospital and Kahuku Medical Center Board, and the Hawaii
State Legislature for safeguarding health care services in the
Ko’olauloa and North Shore communities.
Ha’i lono is a way to keep you informed of the services we
provide to our community. There are many reasons why we are
reaching out to you at this time. First and most important, as a
resident of Ko’olauloa and the North Shore, you or a member of
your family may be directly impacted by our care. Having high
quality health care so close to home may be life saving to you.

The new emergency room boasts new vinyl flooring, corner
guards, ceiling tile, fire doors, signs, laminate surfaces, bathroom
tile work, cubicle curtains, waiting room furniture, and
also painting of all walls and door frames.
The work started in the Fall of 2009 and was phased to keep
the Emergency Department open and operational during
construction. The work was completed February 2011.
A grand MAHALO to all who have generously donated their
time, provided grants and/or materials to help us continue to
serve our community!

Community Newsletter – “ha’i lono”! We are excited about the
development of Kahuku Medical Center and want to share the

KMC recognizes and rewards success throughout the facility.
The WOW program was established to reward employees for
doing consistent, excellent work as well as “above and beyond”
performance. The WOW of the year for 2010 was Julie
Phipps, RN and KMC’s Long-Term Care Coordinator. Julie looks
for opportunities to enhance the residents’ quality of life on a
daily basis. She is a loyal KMC employee and a team player.
Julie is the KMC “Adopt a Highway” champion. A true patient
advocate!

At Kahuku Medical Center, we take much pride in the quality of
care we provide. We always strive to be the best we can be. In
an effort to share our clinical care results with you, the Quality
Corner will focus on specific areas/indicators we measure in
the hospital to keep us focused on high quality care. Ultimately,
we want to be accountable to the community we serve and that
means you! Stay tuned to the next edition of ha’i lono where we
will feature the first quality indicator.

It’s a way for environmentally conscious citizens to make
a contribution to a cleaner state. In addition to a cleaner
roadside, participants
help to prevent pollutants
from entering our
storm drains, streams,
and the ocean. The
Adopt-A-Highway program
provides a great
opportunity to promote
civic responsibility,
community pride, and
camaraderie within our
organizations. Thank
