We have a vacant chair that can never be filled, but the beautiful spirit to whom it belonged
has left us a precious legacy—such a lesson of love, fortitude, and high courage of life so near
perfect….The touch of her hand was a token of truest friendship, her presence a rare
privilege—her memory will be with us always.
These words were spoken by Mrs. Mary Putnam, of the Adirondack Chapter of the
Daughters of the American Revolution, upon the death of Alice Hyde. We are proud and
honored to be part of the Medical Center that bears her name, and continues her loving
legacy.
We sometimes pause and wonder what the world must have been like a century ago when
Alice Hyde was an integral part of the Malone community. Times have certainly changed
since 1910—life expectancy has risen dramatically, new drugs and ever-evolving
technology have given us the ability to prolong and improve the quality of life, and we can
now diagnose and treat diseases that were unheard of 100 years ago.
During its history, the Medical Center has survived and thrived through periods of
economic distress, as well as times of prosperity, and through it all, the Alice Hyde Medical
Center family has remained stalwart in its dedication to carrying forth the selfless legacy of
our namesake.
Today's economic uncertainty has certainly challenged Alice Hyde Medical Center and
medical institutions around the country. It has shaken our fiscal foundation but has not
dampened our steadfast resolve to continue caring for and serving Malone and the
surrounding communities with the same compassion and dedication that community
members have come to expect and trust.
In many ways, our current challenges have provided an opportunity for us to pause, take
notice, and remember what is important about our lives. We have been deeply moved by
the support of all members of the Alice Hyde Medical Center family who gave in some way
during the past year—whether through contributions of time or money, by holding a hand,
hosting a program, participating in a program, joining us for the health fair, volunteering,
calling or visiting legislators, or dedicating their life’s work to our shared mission. The
active and involved engagement of all—employees, physicians, Board of Directors,
volunteers, patients and families, residents, and community members—have made a true
and palpable difference in sustaining our community's precious healthcare resource.
We take this opportunity to express our sincere appreciation to each and every person who
has played a part in keeping Alice Hyde's loving legacy alive.
