E Each year, it is tradition that the Medical Staff President reflects on the previous year's achievements and shares the perspective of the physicians serving our community. Once again, we were privileged and honored to work with all members of the Alice Hyde Medical Center family—from health professionals, to volunteers, the Board of Directors, and community members—as we work in partnership to enhance the care we provide to those who live in our communities. I extend my appreciation for the support, collaboration, and commitment to working together as we strive to meet our community's dynamic health care needs. We are all aware of the impact that the current economic tumult is having on Alice Hyde Medical Center and institutions like ours across around the country. Yet, it has not impacted our commitment to advance medicine and technology. In fact, in 2008, we made significant advances in the areas of urology and primary care and continue to bring cutting edge technology to our community. Our medical services also expanded with the addition of six new physicians who bring notable expertise to our team and enhance the medical diversity in our community. Some of the initiatives on the drawing board are expanding primary care services with the addition of new physicians; bringing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in-house; considering engaging hospitalists to provide even more timely and consistent medical care to inpatients; broadening the array of services delivered locally; and, in partnership with Fletcher Allen Health Care, strengthening our cardiology and nephrology programs. MMany community members volunteer their time and talents to Alice Hyde Medical Center—and each plays a valuable and unique role in meeting community needs. The AHMC Board of Directors is an exemplary group of community-minded individuals who generously give of their time throughout the year. They help guide the organization in meeting its mission, share their expertise in countless areas, such as finance and strategic planning, and help to ensure the continued viability and vibrancy of Alice Hyde Medical Center. We mus t not, in trying t o think about how we can make a big di ffe r ence, ignore the small, daily di ffer ences we can make which, ove r time, add up t o big diffe renc es that we often cannot fo re se e. Marian Wrigh t Ed elman There is not enough that can be said for the extra benefit patients and families derive from the comforting presence of our volunteers. Hospital volunteers are an integral part of the AHMC family and our approach to care—in 2008, our dedicated core of volunteers gave more than 17,406 hours in service to Alice Hyde. Our volunteers provide a range of services for our patients, residents, and their families to further AHMC’s broader mission, and they offer social support companionship, and respite time for caregivers and family members. The AHMC Auxiliary members are part of our volunteer corps and they also conducted many fundraising programs to help support the purchase of new equipment, enable updating of key areas of the Medical Center, and allow expansion of services needed by the community. In 2008, the Auxiliary raised more than $45,813, the largest amount to date, for the purchase of equipment in six departments, including biphasic defibrillators for Ambulatory Surgery and the Emergency Department, a ceiling exam light for the Family Maternity Center, two E-Z Lift Beds for the Medical/Surgical Floor, an infusion pump and infloor scale for the Wade and Marjorie Hastings Dialysis Unit, and a blanket warmer for the ICU. Given the real and growing threat of state and federal budget cuts, all volunteers—regardless of role and function at AHMC—actively engaged in advocacy initiatives to halt proposed cuts and restore the funds needed to meet growing community needs. 3
