DEEP SKY FORUM
Celebrates First Anniversary with New Alvin Huey Observing Guide
The Deep Sky Forum is celebrating its
one year anniversary. Sponsored by Dark Skies
Apparel, the forum was created to offer a place
to discuss everything about the art of deep-sky
observing
To celebrate the anniversary, observing
guide guru Alvin Huey (www.faint
fuzzies.com) created a new downloadable
observing guide using the past year’s “Object of
the Week” from the forum. Members chose
and discussed a different object every week
varying in type and difficulty. Many objects
may require at least an 18-inch telescope and
dark skies. The guide is offered as a PDF and
is available for free at his Alvin’s website.
While at visiting Alvin’s website, you
might also notice that he has just introduced a
major update to his observing guide, The Local
Group. The guide features local group galaxies
within our celestial backyard. Huey used
SEDS and NED as sources to determine
which members are within the “local” group.
Some of the local group members are near
enough that you can see some of their globular
clusters, H-II, OB regions and open clusters.
They are clearly marked and offer a great challenge
for those with large telescopes.
Huey has also recently provided minor
updates to several of his other guides, including
Flat Galaxies, Ring Galaxies, and Abell
Galaxy Clusters.
2013 CANADIAN ASTRONOMY TELESCOPE SHOW
AstroCATS to be Held May 25 and 26
The 2013 Canadian Telescope Show
(AstroCATS) will take place on May 25 &
26, 2013, at the Sheridan College
Athletics Center in Oakville Ontario.
AstroCATS is a 2-day event featuring the
largest commercial display and sale of telescopes
and related astronomical products
in the Canada.
AstroCATS is the first show of this
kind in Canada and ideally situated as an
alternative for attendees. Thanks to its
proximity to the US border (just 15 miles
West of Toronto and only 55 miles North
of Buffalo, NY) organizers anticipate a
large attendance from Upstate New
York, Pennsylvania, Michigan and
Northeast Ohio, as well as from across
Canada.
In addition to exhibits by numerous
telescope vendors, distributors and manufacturers,
the show will include conference
workshops and lectures by well-known
professional and amateur astronomers, as
well as other experts in their fields.
The Canadian Astronomy Trade
Show is hosted by the RASC Hamilton
Centre, an amateur astronomy club established
in 1908. It is one of 29 National
Centres of the Royal Astronomical Society
of Canada (RASC). The event is organized
by RASC Hamilton Centre members. In
addition to club members, there will also
be student volunteers helping to make
everyone’s day enjoyable.
