The BCU, the first library in a French-speaking area to sign with Google, announced<br />

in December 2009 that Google had completed the scanning <strong>of</strong> its pre-1870 out <strong>of</strong><br />

copyright books and that the majority <strong>of</strong> these 100,000 volumes were now publicly<br />

available via the Google Books website but note also the caveats on the BCU website<br />

(http://www.unil.ch/bcu/page73478.html).<br />

Google began scanning up to 500,000 volumes from the BM Lyon collections in<br />

December 2009, with the project due to be complete within 10 years. In November<br />

2009, following the French book trade journal Livres Hebdo’s successful submission<br />

to the Commission d’accès aux documents administratifs (CADA), the Ville de Lyon<br />

made public its contract with Google:<br />

Ghent <strong>University</strong> Library<br />

Google started digitising the Library’s 300,000 out <strong>of</strong> copyright books at the end <strong>of</strong><br />

2007. Although Ghent is in Flanders, the university was French-speaking until 1930<br />

and its collections contain works in French as well as Dutch. More information is<br />

Bibliothèque numérique RERO DOC (http://doc.rero.ch/)<br />

RERO-DOC is the digital library <strong>of</strong> RERO, the Library Network <strong>of</strong> Western Switzerland.<br />

It provides access to the digitised collection <strong>of</strong> books and periodicals <strong>of</strong> RERO<br />

libraries, as well as to the output (electronic theses and e-prints) produced by the<br />

institutions participating in the project, in PDF format. The content is searchable by<br />
